Homegorwn auto major Mahindra & Mahindra’s sports utility vehicle XUV500 has crossed the one lakh sales milestone, less than 3 years of its launch.

Launched in September 2011, the XUV500 was designed entirely in-house at Mahindra’s research and development facility, Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai.

Sensex ends 192 points down; bank stocks fall

Anxiety over easing of interest rate by the Reserve Bank of India early next month weighed heavy on Indian equities markets Thursday as a benchmark index closed nearly 200 points down.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 26,105.89 points, closed at 25,894.97 points (provisional), down 192.45 points or 0.74 percent, from its previous close at 26,087.42 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 26,118.88 points and a low of 25,853.69 points intra-day.

NHRC notice to UP over teenaged girl’s rape

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged rape of a teenaged girl in Mathura district.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that said the Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by six youths in Pingri village July 19, the commission issued notice to the district magistrate and police superintendent of Mathura, calling for a report within two weeks.

“The commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim,” the NHRC said.

Algerians observe minute of silence in solidarity with Gaza

Algerian officials Thursday declared their country’s solidarity with the distressed population in the Gaza Strip by observing a minute of silence, a symbolic gesture of support for Palestinians as Israel continues to pummel the embattled coastal enclave.

Officials Wednesday announced that a minute of silence, as well as a short five-minute pause from work, would be observed midday Thursday in all public and private Algerian institutions in remembrance of the Gazan victims of Israeli airstrikes and in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The Bombay High Court Wednesday ordered that Anita can be given a copy of Rajesh Khanna’s will, whose veracity she has disputed.

“I am extremely thankful to the judicial system. I am grateful to them. This is the third time I have won the case. I got this news yesterday (Wednesday) and I am extremely happy. Let me get the will, then I will think what to do next,” Anita told IANS.

Ebola outbreak not a global threat: Report

The deadly Ebola virus does not pose a global threat, a latest report has claimed, adding that as long as the virus continues to infect people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, there is small risk of more long-distance export of the disease.

“There is no reason to assume that an exported case – be it to Lagos in Nigeria, a city of 17 million people, or any other place – will spark new outbreaks, because Ebola is not highly contagious,” said the Nature report by author Declan Butler.

Stepping up its offensive in Gaza, Israel has mobilised another 16,000 reservists to widen its 24-day military campaign against Hamas militants that has claimed more than 1,360 Palestinian lives, mostly civilians.

The Israeli security cabinet on Wednesday night approved continuing with the offensive ‘Operation Protective Edge’ launched on July 8 despite world leaders appealing Israel for restraint.

UPSC exam row again figures in LS

As the row over UPSC examination pattern again reverberated in the Lok Sabha, government on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has himself taken up the issue seriously and a “balanced and mutually acceptable” solution will be found soon.

Akhilesh makes surprise calls to SPs

Under attack from opposition parties over law and order issue in the state, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today made surprise calles to several senior police officers and checked their locations.

“The Chief Minister called officers of SPs of Deoria, Gonda and Kushinagar to check their location”, an official spokesman of the government said here.

During the calls made by the CM, while SPs of Gonda and Kushingar were found in their officers, SP Deoria was not present as he had gone to Allahabad, he said.

Himachal providing loans to backward classes

The Himachal Pradesh government is providing loans at nominal interest to backward classes from both rural and urban areas, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister D.R. Shandil said Thursday.

The loan will be provided to the backward classes with income up to Rs.81,000 per annum in rural areas and Rs.103,000 per annum in urban areas.

He said the state has waived off two percent additional penal interest for the defaulters under one-time settlement.

International experts arrive at MH17 crash site

Observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) along with four Dutch and Australian experts arrived at the crash site of the Malaysian passenger airliner in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, the OSCE mission in Ukraine said in a statement Thursday.

“OSCE observers have for the first time in almost a week arrived at the MH17 jet crash scene and they are escorted by four experts from the Netherlands and Australia,” the statement said, adding that the observers and the experts reached the site using a new route.

Govt seeks Rs. 15,546-cr fuel subsidy from upstream companies

Indian Oil Corp (IOC) will get Rs. 8,107 crore from upstream firms in fuel subsidy support for the first quarter, while Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) will get Rs. 3,608.88 crore.

The Oil Ministry has fixed the subsidy payout by upstream firms such as Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd at Rs. 15,546.65 crore for the April-June quarter.

Of this, ONGC will pay Rs. 13,200.10 crore and another Rs. 1,846.55 crore will come from OIL. State gas utility GAIL will pay Rs. 500 crore, official sources said.

Resuming the hearing of appeals filed by the West Bengal government and Paul challenging Monday’s order of Justice Dipankar Dutta, a division bench of Justice Girish Chandra Gupta and Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty extended the stay it had granted a day earlier.

Maruti Suzuki net profit up 20.7 %

India’s largest passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki Thursday reported a 20.7 percent rise in net profit for the first quarter of the current fiscal to Rs.762.3 crore from Rs.631.60 crore over the corresponding quarter of previous financial year.

The company posted a net profit of Rs.800.05 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2014.

“The company’s cost reduction and localisation initiatives, growth in volumes and favourable foreign exchange helped improve the bottomline during the quarter,” the company said in a statement.

Parliamentary approval for Delhi budget

Parliamentary approval was Thursday accorded to the budget for the national capital with the Rajya Sabha adopting the measure through voice vote and returning it to the Lok Sabha.

The Delhi budget was passed by the Lok Sabha Wednesday.

The task, normally carried out in the Delhi assembly, had to be taken up by parliament as the capital city is under president’s rule.

Replying to the debate on the budget, Finance minister Arun Jaitley said a medical college, and a multi-specialty hospital in rural south Delhi area are being set up, along with several new educational institutions.

Pune landslide victims’ kin to receive Rs 2 lakh from PM’s relief fund: Rajnath Singh

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here on Thursday that Pune’s Malin village landslide victims’ families will be provided a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s relief fund.

He also said that maximum relief from both the state as well as the centre will be provided.

Expressing his condolences for those who lost their lives, Singh said, “People staying in around 47 houses and more are stuck under the debris. Seeing the current situation it cannot be said that at one time there were houses here, there was also a temple here but it also cannot be seen now.”
