SC ruling on Shariat court draws sharp reaction from clerics

The Supreme Court’s verdict today declaring that a Shariat court has no legal sanction drew sharp reaction from Muslim clerics who said that the Constitution allows them the right to work and act according to Muslim personal law.

Zafaryab Jilani, member of the Muslim Personal Law Board, said, “We are not doing anything parallel to the judicial system and we don’t say that any order passed by a Qazi is binding on all. Our sole motto is to resolve a matter with the consent of two parties involved in accordance with Shariat.”

Russian credit card hacker arrested in US

US security forces have arrested a Russian national on the charges of hacking retailers and stealing credit card information throughout the country.

Roman Valerevich Seleznev (30), of Moscow, also known as “Track2”, was indicted in March 2011 for operating several carding forums that engaged in the distribution of stolen credit card information.

He was arrested over the weekend and transported to Guam for an initial court appearance yesterday, the Department of Justice said.

US troubled by sentencing of Saudi human rights activist

Expressing concern over sentencing of a prominent Saudi Arabia’s human rights activist to 15 years in jail, the US has appealed to the Saudi government to respect international human rights norms.

“The United States is troubled by the 15-year prison sentence, travel ban, and steep fine handed down to human rights lawyer and activist Waleed Abu al-Khair,” State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

“al-Khair’s situation is discussed in our most recent Human Rights Report on Saudi Arabia,” she said.

China prepares for an aging society

The Chinese government seems all set to build an elder-friendly society given the rising number of senior citizens in the country.

Ten ministerial-level departments, including the ministries of civil affairs and education, Monday jointly released a circular calling for the country to prepare for an aging society, Xinhua reported.

The circular stressed on the importance of building an elder-friendly society as the percentage of the senior population is rising quickly.

Three-year-old raped by teenager in UP

A three-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a 15-year-old boy in Dehat area of the district, police said here on Tuesday.

The accused lured the victim after promising her sweets and allegedly raped her late last evening, in-charge of Dehat police station Padam Singh said.

Police said the boy has been arrested and the girl, who is in a serious condition, has been referred to a Aligarh hospital.

Dolly Parton vows to adopt abandoned Glastonbury dog

Country legend Dolly Parton has offered to adopt a dog left behind by its owner at Britain’s Glastonbury festival last month.

The white lurcher was discovered abandoned in a tent during the festival clean-up last week. It was taken to the nearby Happy Landings animal shelter, where she was dubbed Dolly in honour of the ‘Jolene’ hitmaker, who was the star turn of the 2014 event, reported Ace Showbiz.

Parton, 68, has now offered to adopt the dog if its owner does not claim her.

The 61-year-old actor was left devastated when his first wife Cassandra Harris died from ovarian cancer in 1991 and his adopted daughter Charlotte succumbed to the same disease last year, and thinks his religious beliefs and upbringing have given him the strength he needed to carry on, reported New York daily News.

“I would say faith, being Irish, being Catholic, it’s ingrained in my DNA,” Braosnan said.

Indian rupee recovers by 8 paise against US dollar, at 59.93

The Indian rupee recovered by 8 paise to 59.93 against the US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on increased selling of the American currency by exporters.

Forex dealers said strengthening of the euro and yen against the dollar in overseas market and a higher opening in the domestic equity market also supported the rupee.

The Indian currency had lost 29 paise, its biggest drop in nearly three weeks, to close at 60.01 against the dollar on on rising demand for the US currency from custodian banks.

It should not be a mere bureaucratic planning. Take every elected public representative right from the village level into confidence while drafting the plans,” Rao said.

Japan issues highest alert over typhoon Neoguri

Japan is bracing for one of its worst storms in over a decade as typhoon Neoguri barrelled towards the southern Okinawa island chain, with 55,000 people urged to evacuate as the weather agency issued its highest alert.

The top-level warning means a threat to life, as well as the risk of massive damage from torrential rains and gusts of up to 250 kilometres (155 miles) per hour.

Journalists protest in Hyderabad over blocking of channels

Journalists of two Telugu news channels, accompanied by members of different organisations of the fraternity, took to the streets here on Monday protesting against the blocking of their telecast in Telangana for the past three weeks and demanding immediate lifting of the ban.

“The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is working on a scientific drainage plan for the city and a detailed project report for the Rs. 750 crore plan has been under discussion. With diesel price deregulation likely at some point this fiscal, high subsidies on LPG and kerosene will continue to be a major challenge, Icra Research said Monday.

With the BJP-led government continuing with the previous government’s decision of raising diesel prices by up to 50 paisa per month, “the retail price of diesel could get aligned with the market determined prices within FY15 barring a spike in crude oil prices or depreciation of the rupee versus the US dollar,” it said in a statement here.

Proposal for Rs 1,000 minimum monthly pension approved: Govt

Government has approved minimum monthly pension of Rs 1,000 under Employees Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS-95) run by the retirement body Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Parliament was informed Monday.

The decision of the government would immediately benefit 28 lakh pensioners including 5 lakh widows getting less than Rs 1000 as pension every month. In all, there are 44 lakh pensioners under the EPS-95 scheme.
