Heavy rains in Bangladesh trigger flash floods

Rush of hill water and heavy rains have generated flash floods in vast regions of Bangladesh’s Sunamganj region.

The Surma River was flowing 57cm above the danger mark near the district, said the FLOOD Control Cell of Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB).

Floodwater swallowed low-lying areas in Sunamganj, Sadar and Tahirpur sub-districts or upazilas, leaving 500 families stranded, reports the Daily Star.

Biswambharpur, Doarabazaar and Jamalganj upazilias were also hit by the floodwaters five days back.

Indians bought US real estate worth US$ 5.8 billion in FY’14

Taking benefit of the slump in the American housing market, Indians spent USD 5.8 billion in FY 2014 to purchase real estate in that country, a latest report has said.

China tops the list of foreign nationals with USD 22 billion in real estate investment for the one year period ended March 2014, the National Association of Realtors said. China is followed by Canada (USD 13.8 billion); India and Britain with USD 5.8 billion each and Mexico (USD 4.5 billion), it said.

SFJ can’t file amended rights complaint against Sonia Gandhi

A US court has denied a request made by a Sikh rights group to file an amended complaint against Congress party president Sonia Gandhi in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) had written to US District Judge Brian Cogan requesting “leave to further amend the complaint” against Gandhi was denied by the judge?who said in his order that since the case against Gandhi was dismissed last month, there is no basis for SFJ to seek further amendment of the complaint.

US intelligence agencies spied on Muslim Americans

U.S. spy agencies pried into e-mails of five Muslim Americans in order to identify threats to NATIONAL SECURITY, reveal documents leaked by ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

According to reports on the intercept, A LAWYER, professor and a political operative were among the targets.

The NSA and FBI however claimed that they had only spied on Americans since they had had a probable cause.

All five American Muslims have denied association with any terrorist groups.

Sensex declines over 300 pts in late morning trade

Wiping out early gains, the BSE benchmark Sensex was trading nearly 328 points lower as selling pressure emerged soon after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley began his Budget speech.

After rising to 25,613.72 points at the outset, the Sensex slipped into negative zone by falling sharply 327.81 points, or 1.28 per cent to 25,117.00 at 1145 hrs.

All the sectoral indices led by consumer durables, power, banking and capital goods sectors led decline. The Sensex thereafter showed some recovery.

NASA discovers fast neutrons emitting from Sun’s outer layer

NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft has discovered part of the outer layer of the Sun that is sending out modestly energetic subatomic particles called fast neutrons, which flowed past Mercury into space.

The researchers said that such charged particles twirl and gyrate around the magnetic field lines created by the vast magnetic systems that surround the Sun and Earth. Neutrons, however, not being electrically charged, travel in straight lines from the flaring region and can carry information about flare processes unperturbed by the environment through which they move.

E-visas facility at nine airports soon

E-visa facilities will be introduced at nine airports in the next six months to attract more tourists.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced this while presenting the first national budget of the Narendra Modi government.

He said tourism helped in job creation and e-visas would encourage more tourists to visit India,

Indian-American appointed interim president of US varsity

Indian-American Nagi Naganathan, an alumnus of the National Institute of Technology at Tiruchirappalli, has been appointed interim president of the University of Toledo.

Naganathan, 58, has been at University of Toledo since 1986, first as a professor and later as chairman of the department of mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineering. Board members unanimously approved his appointment.

Five more IIMs, IITs to come up

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday said that five new IITs and IIMs will be set up across the country.

“…I also intend to set up five more IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) in Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala,” Jaitley said while presenting the budget for 2014-15.

“Five more IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) would be set up in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab and Maharashtra. I propose to allocate an amount of Rs.500 crore for this.”

Half-burnt body of youth found in Firozabad

A half-burnt body of an unidentified youth was found this morning from Basai Mohammadpur area here, police said.

The body, sealed in a sack, was spotted in a field in Nagla Udi by some persons after which they informed the police, circle officer Ajitendra Vijay said.

Prima facie it appears that the youth was killed somewhere else and his body was later disposed of in the area, he said.

The deceased was about 20 years old, Vijay said, adding, investigation into the case is on.

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to develop the picturesque and heritage-rich port city of Visakhapatnam and the district as a tourism hub.

18-yr-old raped at gunpoint in Muzaffarnagar

An eighteen-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at gunpoint in Bhensaheri village here, following which a case has been registered against two persons, police said.

According to a complaint filed by the mother of the girl at Chapra Police Station, Rafik and Kalam entered the girl’s house yesterday. Kalam put the revolver on the girl’s head while Rafik allegedly raped her, SHO Arun Kumar Tyagi said.

The police has registered a case against the two in this connection, Tyagi said, adding, both the accused are absconding.

Neymar recovering ‘very well’ from fractured vertebra, reveals Barca

Barcelona has revealed that Brazilian striker Neymar’s is recovering very well from the fractured vertebra injury that ended his 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Medical staff from Neymar’s club Barcelona visited the star striker at his home in Brazil to check on the problem and the player’s recovery.

A statement from the Spanish club said that the injury is progressing very well, reported The BBC.

The statement added that Neymar would continue his treatment from 5 August and the final stage of his recovery in Barcelona.

After re-examining a sparrow-sized fossil from China, they discovered that birds did not evolve from ground-dwelling dinosaurs.

10-year-old girl raped on Panchayat chief’s directive in Jharkhand

A ten-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour on the diktat of a Panchayat chief in Bokaro district, the police said.

The 25-year-old rape accused allegedly dragged the girl to a nearby bush and raped her on the directive of Bhopal Pasi, the Panchayat chief of Swang Gulgulia Dhoura village in Bokaro district’s Gomia police station area, at a panchayat meeting on Tuesday evening.

Both the rape accused and Bhopal were arrested on Wednesday on the basis of the girl’s statement, Bokaro SP Jitendra Kumar Singh said.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has begun to present his maiden General Budget for the year 2014-15.

Jaitley began presenting the budget proposals for fiscal 2014-15 with the permission of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan at 11 a.m..

He began the presentation by saying that he was doing so with the full knowledge that the people of India are passing through some tough economic times, and that the government is duty-bound to address those concerns brought on by a high fiscal deficit and a high level of subsidies.
