Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said here today that the NDA Government is betraying the people with their ‘Goods Days are Coming Again” election slogan.

Taunting on the recent hike in the onion prices Yadav said, “The inflation will increase further, ‘Acche dino ka intezaar karo’ (just wait for the good days). The people will have to suffer the false notion of the government which showed them dreams of good days,” said Yadav.

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta is meeting Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria regarding her harassment charge against former boyfriend Ness Wadia.

Singer Kelly Osbourne, who recently shaved off both sides of her lilac-coloured locks, shocked her fans with her new tattoo on the side of her head. She later apologised to her parents, saying “sorry mum and dad but I love it”.

Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan resigns

West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan has resigned, a state minister said Monday, becoming the fourth governor to quit since a BJP-led government took office last month.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee told the media that the 79-year-old Narayanan’s last day of work will be Friday.

Saying the state government was “deeply pained” by Narayanan’s “sudden resignation”, Chatterjee made an oblique criticism of the Narendra Modi government.

“What good it will do to the state is a subject for those who made this happen,” said the minister.

ISRO successfully launches PSLV C-23

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-23 was successfully launched from Sriharikota Space Centre in Nellore district at 9.52 am today.

After a perfect lift-off from the First Launch Pad in Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 9.52 am witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Space Research Organisation’s workhorse PSLV-C23 placed all the five satellites into their intended orbits, one after the other between 17 and 19 minutes after liftoff.

Only a single gene decides whether a rare form of cancer called thymoma, derived from the epithelial cells of the thymus, an organ critical to the lymphatic system where T-cells, or so-called “killer cells,” mature, will be aggressive or non-aggressive, finds a new study.

Very little is known about the role of the gene mutation GTF2l in human tumours, but the scientists said almost all indolent (slow growing and non-aggressive) forms of thymoma they tested have the mutation.

Pakistani forces launch ground offensive in North Waziristan

Pakistani security forces, backed by artillery and tanks, Monday started a ground offensive against the militants in North Waziristan tribal region after two weeks of airstrikes, the military said.

“After the evacuation of all civil population, ground operation commenced in and around Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan early morning today,” army spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa said.

Giving details of the ground offensive, the military said a house to house search of Miranshah town is being carried out by infantry troops and special service group, Xinhua reported.

Beas tragedy: One more student’s body recovered

One more swollen body of an engineering student from Hyderabad was Monday recovered from the Beas river near here 22 days after 24 students and a tour operator were washed away in a tragedy, police said.

The latest body was identified as that of M. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy. Four students and a tour operator still remain untraced.

Reddy’s body, in a badly decomposed state, was seen floating near the Pandoh dam, almost 15 km downstream from the accident site, police said.

Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told IANS that the search continues for the remaining victims.

Man shot dead, Rs.18 lakh looted

Robbers gunned down an accountant of a private firm here Monday and looted Rs.18 lakh the man was carrying to deposit in a bank, police said.

The daring crime took place near the State Bank of India branch on Railway Road. The dead man was identified as Sandeep, 35.

Sandeep, who worked for Sanjay Trading Co, a distributor of edible oil, came out of his office in Kirtanwali Gali with a bag containing Rs.18 lakh in cash around 10 a.m., police said.

He was headed to the bank when three robbers on a motorcycle stopped him.

Mizoram governor takes additional charge of Tripura

Mizoram Governor Vakkom B. Purushothaman Monday took additional charge as the governor of Tripura.

Purushothaman was sworn-in by Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta at a simple ceremony at Raj Bhavan here.

Purushothaman, an 86-year-old veteran Congress leader who served in his native state Kerala as a minister and the assembly speaker and was also elected to the Lok Sabha twice, was appointed Mizoram governor by then president Pratibha Patil in August 2011.

Kharif sowings delayed in Telangana

The monsoon is playing as truant to the farmers in Telangana who are anxiously waiting for the first showers to kick off the kharif season.

A deficit of 56 per cent rainfall was registered by the T State.

In June, it received 46 mm of rainfall as against the normal average of 105 mm. Therefore, sowing activity has not commenced in half of the 10 lakh hectares where sowing should have been completed by now.

Social media cell in new T

The T Government has set up a dedicated social media cell to get in touch with the people. Chief Minister KC Rao’s office will soon have a Twitter account and Facebook page, said Rao’s son and IT Minister Taraka Rama Rao.

Sharing his viewpoint on social media and its efficacy in public services at a meeting of the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) on Saturday evening, he said the IT Ministry had just opened a Facebook page.

US healthcare worst in developed countries

A recent report comparing healthcare systems has ranked US been as the worst among eleven developed countries. This is the fifth successive time the US has finished at the bottom with the same study done in 2010, 2007, 2006 and 2004 also ranking it worst.

Not only did the US have the worst health outcomes, it also ranked last or near last on efficiency, access and equity. The UK ranked first overall, followed closely by Switzerland.

Modification needed in Scholarship scheme

An unprecedented annual allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the welfare of minorities in Telangana budget for 2014-15 was earmarked by the TRS government.

The new government has also give its word to earmark Rs one lakh crore for SCs, STs, BCs and minorities in the coming five years.

The break-up of the outlay includes Rs 10,000 crore for minorities, Rs 15,000 crore for STs, Rs 25,000 crore for BCs and Rs 50,000 crore for SCs. This would mean an annual budgetary provision of Rs 20,000 crore for these four groups.

Cigarette makers lobbying hard to stop excise duty hike

Cigarette manufacturers worried by falling stock prices and plunging sales are lobbying hard to prevent the government from hiking excise duty for the third straight year.

The Tobacco Institute of India, Industry body, in its budget submission to the finance ministry, has requested the government to carry on with the current duty on cigarettes and reduce duty on the smaller size sub-65 mm. 200 per thousand sticks from length filter to Rs.669 per thousand cigarettes to allow the industry to fight against the proliferating illegal tax-evaded cigarettes and counterfeits.
