Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday greeted the nation on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

“As Ramzan (Ramadan) begins, I convey my greetings and pray that the holy month brings peace and happiness in everyone’s life,” Modi said in a tweet.

Ramadan fasts started Monday after the sighting of the moon Sunday night.

Teenager held for acid attack on minor in Delhi

A teenager has been detained for an acid attack in which an 11-year-old boy almost lost his eyesight, police said Monday.

The attack took place Saturday evening in east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area when Class 7 student Upendra Kumar was attacked by his 17-year-old neighbour.

Police said the people present at the spot immediately rushed the boy to a hospital where he is recuperating.

The attacker, who was caught from the spot, told police that he was not happy about Upendra Kumar playing with his younger brother.

Centre to develop 332km waterways in Odisha

The central government will develop 332km of inland waterways in Odisha at an investment of Rs.2,000 by 2017, officials said Monday.

The project – to be completed in two phases – would provide water transport facilities to the state’s prominent industrial hubs.

The first phase of the project comprises of a stretch of 201 km while the second phase comprises of a stretch of 131 km.

The state government, the Paradip Port Trust and the Dharma Port Company Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding here Monday on this with the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

8 crude bombs found in a passenger train at the railway station

Bihar Police today recovered eight crude bombs from a Malda passenger train at a railway station in the state’s Kishanganj District.

Assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI), Government Railway Police (GRP) Anil Kumar Singh confirmed the report.

The bombs were found inside a packet during a raid in a coach of the train.

The bomb has been diffused, but the GRP is still investigating into the matter.

The presence of bombs despite regular patrolling of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and GRP personnel at the station has brought the security under question.

Somanth Chatterjee hospitalized

Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee has been admitted to a nursing home here due to respiratory complaints, a hospital official said Monday.

Chatterjee complained of restlessness late Sunday evening and was brought to the hospital.

“His condition is stable now. The required tests have been conducted,” the official said.

14 Gaza rockets hit southern Israel: army

At least 14 rockets and mortar rounds fired by militants in Gaza struck southern Israel this morning, causing no injuries but damaging a home, the army said.

The latest incident added to the already-high tension in the area which has seen a surge in rocket fire over the past two weeks.

The rise in rocket fire has coincided with the start on June 12 of a huge Israeli arrest operation in the West Bank aimed at finding three teenagers believed kidnapped by Hamas militants.

Will restore cancelled medical seats: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday said seats that were recently slashed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) owing to lack of proper infrastructure in the state’s medical colleges will be restored.

“The MCI had cancelled 1,000 medical seats in Bengal. We succeeded in restoring 400 of them. We will get back the rest,” she said at an official function here.

The number of seats last year was around 2,400 and this year only 1,755 are available.

Banerjee said as many as 131 industrial training institute (ITIs) and 75 polytechnic colleges are on the anvil.

Kerala to raise age for pension scheme

The Kerala government plans to raise from 55 to 60 years the age for expatriates to register their names in the diaspora pension scheme, a minister said Monday.

The pension scheme, launched in 2009 by the previous Left government, was meant for the age group 18 to 55 years.

The scheme is devised in such a manner that a minimum monthly payment of Rs.300 has to be paid by the individual and the state government will contribute two percent.

For the scheme to be active, the minimum period any person should contribute is five years.

The Japan government is seeking to get the cabinet approval Tuesday to a resolution that will allow the country to exercise collective self-defence rights through reinterpreting the country’s pacifist constitution.

Mother’s milk bank in Jaipur soon

After the successful launch of a mother’s milk bank in Rajasthan’s Udaipur city, another such bank will be opened in Jaipur soon by Inaya Foundation, an NGO.

Work is on to finalise the area for the bank in a government hospital in Jaipur city.

The Inaya Foundation recently gave a presentation on the milk bank to the medical and health department officials. It is one of the non-government organisations which will run the milk bank in Jaipur.

The first mother’s milk bank in Udaipur was inaugurated in April 2013.

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan Monday lost his sarod, which he has been playing for the last 45 years, while travelling from London to New Delhi.

“I hope a miracle happens,” Amjad Ali Khan told a TV channel.

“My sarod was with me for 45 years,” he added.

The Padma Vibhushan recipient was travelling on British Airways and the international carrier has confirmed the incident.

Filmmaker Mohit Suri says his wife Udita Goswami is “musically inclined” and wanted to be a rock star but ended up being an actor.

His cousin Pooja Bhatt had launched Udita in Bollywood with her 2003 film “Paap” and two years later Suri directed the actress in her second film “Zeher”.

“Udita wanted to be a rock star but ended up being an actor. She is more musically inclined,” said Suri who tied the knot with Udita in 2013 after dating her for about nine years.

“Right now she is doing her music production course. She is already working it out to perform as a DJ,” he added.

Naga militant gets life term for triple murder

A court here Monday sentenced Naga militant Hopeson Ningshen to life in prison for abducting and murdering three government officials in Manipur in 2009.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge V.K. Gupta sentenced Ningshen and imposed a fine of Rs.35,000 on him. He is a member of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM).

On Feb 13, 2009, Thingnam Kishan Singh, sub-divisional officer of Kasom Khullen in Ukhrul district, and five other officials were abducted by militants.

India launches five foreign satellites, Modi wants one for SAARC

India Monday placed in orbit five foreign satellites, prompting a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop a SAARC satellite to be “dedicated to our neighbourhood as a gift from India”.

“Truly, this is a global endorsement of India’s space capabilities,” said Modi, who applauded as the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C23 – 44.4 metres tall and weighing 230 tonnes – tore into the sky with orange flames fiercely burning at its tail.

The rocket, which took off at 9.52 a.m., was the first space mission after Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took office.

OIC, Arab League call for Ramadan ceasefire in Syria

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League have called for a ceasefire in Syria during the holy month of Ramadan.

Iyad Ameen Madani, the secretary-general of the OIC, and Nabil Al Arabi, the secretary-general of the Arab League, made a joint appeal urging all parties to the conflict in Syria to commit to a full ceasefire and put a halt to all acts and forms of violence and fighting on the occasion of Ramadan.

30 bodies found on migrant boat in Italy

At least 30 bodies were found on a migrant boat in Italy Monday, media reported.

Officials said nearly 600 passengers were rescued by the Italian navy early Monday in Sicily, the ANSA news agency said.

Officials suspect the victims were asphyxiated to death.

Officials said more than 5,000 migrants were rescued off the coast of Italy this weekend alone under the government’s search-and-rescue programme launched after roughly 400 migrants died off Sicily in October 2013.

An Australian Muslim in Syria has denied funding terrorism after his bank accounts were closed, media reported Monday.

Sydney resident Mohamed Zuhbi’s bank accounts were closed 10 days ago when he became a vocal supporter of the Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.

He said the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was behind the decision.

Watchman convicted for killing woman lawyer in Mumbai

A Mumbai court Monday found a security watchman guilty of molestation, criminal trespass and murder of a woman lawyer, the daughter of a senior bureaucrat couple, in Mumbai two years ago.

The accused, Sajjad A. Mogal, 23, was working at Himalayan Heights skyscraper in Wadala in south Mumbai where Pallavi Purkayastha (25) lived at the time of the attack Aug 9, 2012.

Purkayastha was killed after she fought off Mogal’s advances in her home and complained to her fiance Avik Sengupta.

An Egyptian police officer was killed and three security personnel injured in a blast near the presidential palace in eastern Cairo Monday, media reported.

Colonel Ahmed al-Ashmawi, a bomb disposal expert at Cairo security directorate, was killed while defusing one of two bombs planted near the Ittihadiya palace in Heliopolis district, Xinhua reported citing the online edition of the state-run Ahram newspaper.

Ramadan saves Filipino from being beheaded by terrorists

A Filipino who was kidnapped by terrorist group Abu Sayyaf in south Philippines in early June was saved from being beheaded due to Ramadan, media reported Monday.

Abu Sayyaf is linked to the global Islamist militant organisation Al Qaeda.

The terrorists called Analiza Lingayan, the captive’s wife, Sunday night and told her that “they were not going to decapitate her husband, as planned before, out of respect for Ramadan”, according to Philippine Star.
