Telangana State comes into existence

Telangana, the 29th State of India, came into existence at Sunday midnight.

The birth of the new State was celebrated by thousands of people who gathered on streets across 10 districts of Telangana. Amid slogans of “Jai Telangana”, people paid huge tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives demanding statehood for the region in the last six decades. Mass celebrations were organised at Necklace Road, Martyrs Memorial at Gun Park, historic Charminar, Telangana Bhavan, Gandhi Bhavan and other places. All prominent buildings were illuminated to mark the birthday of Telangana.

Petition calls on British leaders to consider Diwali, Eid holidays

An online petition to the British House of Commons has urged the politicians to create a bank holiday for Hindu Diwali and Muslim Eid festival in the country, a media report said.

The petition has 119,000 signatures and could be debated in the British parliament as the e-petition with over 100,000 signatures qualifies to be considered in the parliament under the rules of e-petition scheme in 2011, Daily Mail reported Sunday.

The two holidays would be the first non-Christian religious holidays in Britain and could lead to calls from other faiths for their events to also be recognised.

US plane makes emergency landing after dog poops thrice

In a bizarre incident, a Philadelphia-bound US flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a dog defecated thrice in the centre aisle making the smelly ordeal unbearable for passengers on board.

The US Airways flight 598 was delayed for about two hours in Los Angeles and when the plane finally took off for Philadelphia, the passengers settled in for what they hoped would be a routine flight, but were woken up from their sound sleep to a horrible smell emanating from the “big dog” poop last week.

Rajiv sharma posted as CS of Telangana State

With the Telangana State coming into existence from June 2, the Centre has deputed Dr Rajiv Sharma, IAS of 1982 batch, to officiate as Chief Secretary to Government of Telangana State until further orders.
Dr Rajiv Sharma worked as Director General of CGG from September 2006 to January 2011. He is a career civil servant belonging to the Indian Administrative Service. He did his Bachelor of Engineering in 1976 from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee; Master of Arts in Rural Development from University of East Anglia, U.K and Ph.D. in Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University, USA.

Stunning NASA video shows gigantic sun eruption

NASA’s sun-observing IRIS spacecraft has captured its first stunning close-up of a colossal coronal mass ejection (CME) erupting from the sun.

The field of view for this imagery is about five times the width of earth and about seven-and-half times its length, a tremendous sheet of solar material can be seen erupting in a latest video released by NASA.

The view is unprecedented for IRIS which was launched in June last year to observe the lowest levels of the sun’s atmosphere with better resolution than ever before.

HC declines to grant stay on Appointed day of T

The High Court today declined to grant a stay on the Appointed Day of Telangana State since a case against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was pending before the Supreme Court of India.
The High Court was dealing with a House Motion Petition filed by one Sanjeeva Reddy seeking a stay on the Appointed Day of Telangana State. The court also adjourned the hearing on House Motion Petition to take up after five weeks. Alleging there were lacunae in the AP Reorganization Act of 2014, the petitioner sought immediate hearing on his House Motion Petition.

Congress today suspended Rajasthan MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma a day after he voiced his opinions against party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

“Sharma has been suspended by the PCC chief on direction by the AICC General Secretary in charge Gurudas Kamat,” PCC spokesperson Archna Sharma said.

Sharma had yesterday attacked the leadership of Rahul saying he was directionless and surrounded by advisers who lack political understanding.

Two Badaun-rape accused confess to gangrape and murder

Two of the men arrested for allegedly raping and murdering teenage sisters whose bodies were found hanging from a tree have confessed to the crime, Uttar Pradesh police today said and asserted it was in the process of collecting ”concrete” evidence to nail the culprits in court.

“Two of the accused, who have been arrested in connection with this incident, have confessed to their crime during interrogation,” Superintendent of Police Atul Saxena told PTI, but refused to identify the men.

Kolkata bursts crackers, celebrates Knight victory

Kolkatans burst firecrackers and broke into celebrations as Kolkata Knight Riders emerged champions in the Indian Premier league Sunday, the team’s second success in the last three years.

As Piyush Chawla sent Parvinder Awana into the fence past point to score the winning runs, the Knights’ fans here “glued to the television sets since the early evening to catch the final live” jumped in joy, pumped their feasts and shouted in rejoicement.

All set for KCR swearing-in as CM Today

TRS supremo K Chandrasekhara Rao will take oath as first Chief Minister of Telangana State post bifurcation on June 2. He will be administered oath by Governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan on Monday at 8.15 am. Narasimhan will also take oath as Governor of Telangana State at 6.30 am before KCR takes oath.

Knight Riders clinch second IPL title

The Kolkata Knight Riders clinched their second Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Kings XI Punjab by three wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here Sunday.

Put in to bat, Kings XI were powered to a massive total of 199/4 by wicketkeeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha who hammered an unbeaten 115 from just 55 deliveries which included 10 boundaries and eight sixes. He was given good support in the middle by Manan Vohra (67).

In reply, the Knight Riders managed the victory with only three balls left to spare after a Manish Pandey 94 took the 2012 edition champions to victory.
