Modi greets Telangana people, first chief minister

Assuring his full support to India’s 29th state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said Telangana was born due to years of struggle and sacrifices and congratulated its first Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao.

“India gets a new state! We welcome Telangana as our 29th state. Telangana will add strength to our development journey in the coming years,” the prime minister tweeted minutes after Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rao.

First meeting of SIT on black money to be held today

The first high-level meeting of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money and special probe into cases of unaccounted funds stashed by Indians abroad, will be held here today.

The meeting, to be chaired by Justice (Retd.) MB Shah, will be attended by SIT Vice-Chairman Justice (Retd.) Arijit Pasayat and top officials of 11 high-profile agencies and departments.

According to sources from the media reports the meeting is expected to discuss policy matters on combating the menace of black money and the status of ongoing probes.

UN concerned over rising humanitarian needs in Sudan

The UN Sunday expressed concerns that the marked increase in humanitarian needs in Sudan is not being met with a sufficient level of humanitarian aid, putting at risk hundreds of thousands of affected people throughout the country.

“While there seems to be less international humanitarian funding available for Sudan due to emerging crises elsewhere in the region and other reasons, Sudan’s humanitarian needs are increasing,” Xinhua quoted Ali Al-Za’tari, UN Resident and Humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, as saying in a statement.

E S L Narasimhan sworn in as Governor of Telangana

Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan was today sworn in as the Governor of Telangana, the country’s 29th state.

Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta administered the oath to Narasimhan, who will be the common Governor to Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh.

Hyderabad will be the joint capital of Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh.

British parliament may soon have to consider a request for a day off for Diwali and Eid with an online petition seeking a holiday for the festivals already attracting more than 119,500 signatures.

Under the rules of the e-petition scheme?introduced in 2011, once the 100,000 signature mark is reached it could be considered for a House of Commons debate.

Gujarat CM seeks help from holy men to save girl child

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel has sought co-operation from religious leaders in its movement to save the girl child and prevent female foeticide.

“I make a request to holy men to expedite the movement to save the girl child,” she said, addressing a religious event in Junagadh district.

Patel also cited the Gujarat government’s success in the movement against female foeticide which resulted in moderating the state’s gender ratio.

One arrested, four others booked for gang-raping woman

One person was arrested and four others were booked for allegedly gang-raping a 30-year-old Dalit woman last week, police said today.

The five accused took the woman to a spot with the promise of getting her a job at a thermal power unit at Dadri and gang-raped her there, they said.

According to sources, the police did not initially register the case but after intervention of senior police officials an FIR was lodged today against the five accused under relevant sections and one person was arrested.

Two of the accused have been identified as Pappu Yadav and Naresh.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Kolkata Knight Riders and team owner Bollywood badshah Shahrukh Khan for the side’s triumph in the seventh Indian Premier League Sunday.

Soon after the Knights recorded a three-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab in the IPL final, Banerjee conveyed her congratulations to the team in a post on social networking side Facebook. “Congratulations… KKR… Congratulations…shahrukh” she said in the Facebook post.

Iraq vows legal action against buyers of smuggled oil

The Iraqi government Sunday warned international oil companies of buying cargo of crude oil exported from Iraq’s Kurdistan region, confirming that it will take legal action against any buyer for the “stolen and smuggled” oil.

“The ministry of oil confirms its warning to the world companies and markets not to buy the oil cargo on the vessel ( United Leadership), which is loaded with crude oil extracted from the oilfields of Kurdistan region,” Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement.

Kuwaiti Emir visits Iran to mend troubled ties

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah arrived here Sunday for a landmark visit to mend bilateral ties that were troubled by Iran’s alleged intervention of internal affairs of some Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

As a member of the GCC, which also includes Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait has been at odds with Iran over Tehran’s alleged intervention in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Xinhua reported.

Four Al Qaeda members held in Yemen

Four members of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda offshoot were detained during a police raid at a hotel in the country’s Hadramout province Sunday, a security official said.

“The military police forces launched an operation and stormed a hotel in the Seiyun town of Hadramut province, detaining four Al Qaeda operatives,” Xinhua quoted the official as saying.

The captured men were mid-level commanders of the Al Qaeda group. They were involved in several drive-by shootings and armed attacks against security forces and intelligence officials in the province, the official added.

Libya’s renegade general forces launch air strikes

Warplanes belonging to the renegade general Khalifa Haftar launched Sunday three air strikes targeting military bases in Libya’s Benghazi city, a military spokesperson said.

The jets bombed three goals including local militias and regular army bases damaging some civilian facilities, Xinhua quoted the spokesperson for a militia group “Chamber of Libya” Ahmad Jazawi as saying.

The jets were targeting camps of the February 17 Brigade and the headquarters of the National Army 204 Tank Battalion in the western area of the city, while the historic Crown Palace was also bombed.

Five killed in Russian chopper crash

At least five people were killed when a Mi-8 helicopter crashed overnight into a lake in northern Russia, authorities said Sunday.

Five people were found dead, Xinhua quoted Vladimir Markin, a spokesperson of the Russian Investigative Committee as saying, as divers have started to search for victims at Lake Munozero in Murmansk region.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said 18 people, including five crew members, were aboard the ill-fated aircraft, among whom two survived with injuries while others were missing.

Israel allows homosexuals to use surrogacy

The Israeli government Sunday approved changes to guidelines on an existing surrogacy law which would allow same-sex couples and single people in the country to have children through surrogates, Xinhua reported.

The bill proposal, which would allow expanding the surrogacy eligibility in Israel beyond heterosexual couples, was initiated by Health Minister Yael German.

According to the new bill, any couple including homosexuals would be eligible to perform the procedure with up to two children. It would also allow single person to use surrogates under various terms.

YSRCP to celebrate Telangana formation day

YSR Congress would celebrate the formation of the Telangana State on Monday in all the ten districts of the state and the main function would be held at the Central office here. A decision to this effect was taken by the Telangana ad-hoc committee of the Party which met here on Sunday.
