‘Revolutionary’ immune therapy holds key to treatment of advanced bladder cancer

A multi-center phase I study using an investigational drug for advanced bladder cancer patients who did not respond to other treatments has shown promising results in patients with certain tumor types, researchers report.

Yale Cancer Center played a key role in the study, the results of which will be presented Saturday, May 31 at the 2014 annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

DLF posts Rs 219.68 cr net profit during Jan-Mar quarter

Marking a turnaround, country’s largest realty firm DLF on Thursday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 219.68 crore for the quarter ended March 31 against a net loss of Rs 4.19 crore in the year-ago period.

Total income from operations fell by 11.5 percent to Rs 1,969.45 crore in the fourth quarter of last fiscal compared with Rs 2,225.55 crore in the corresponding quarter of previous year.

The company posted the net profit in March 2014 quarter on the back of sharp jump in other income at Rs 552.15 crore from Rs 93.24 crore during the period under review.

Sugary drinks may lower semen quality

Sugar-sweetened drinks such as soda can lower semen quality, a new study has found.

Researchers have found that high consumption of sugary drinks is associated with low sperm motility, or sperm movement – but this was true only for healthy, lean men.

The researchers found no relationship between sugary drink consumption and sperm motility in overweight or obese men.

Chandrasekhara Rao sworn-in as first CM of Telangana

Hyderabad, June 02:

Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao was on Monday sworn in as the first Chief Minister of Telangana, which became the 29th state of India.

Rao was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor ESL Narasimhan in a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here around 8.47 am.

Eleven ministers have also taken oath in K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Cabinet in the new state of Telangana.

The ministers, who took oath today, include Mahmood Ali, Dr T Rajaiah, Nayani, Etala, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Harish Rao and KT Rama Rao.

Man with stolen GPS calls police for help after getting lost

A man from US, who stole GPS (Global Positioning System), was arrested after he called police to ask them for help because he got lost.

Andrew James Joffe was unaware that a warrant had been issued for his arrest on driving offences when he contacted the authorities in Polk City, Florida, Metro.co.uk reported.

Grady Judd, Sheriff of Polk County said that they had people with warrants who called them to turn themselves in before, but it was unusual for someone with an active warrant, who just burgled a car, to get lost and calling them for help.

PM to meet council of ministers today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday meet his council of ministers to deliberate upon the steps required for efficient governance and implementation of programmes.

According to reports, Modi will highlight his thrust areas and call for suggestions from his ministerial colleagues at the meeting.

1948: Indian Army annexes princely state of Hyderabad, which comprised different regions including Telangana.

Nov 1, 1956: Telangana merged with Andhra State, which was carved out of Madras State, to form Andhra Pradesh, a united state for Telugu-speaking people.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has congratulated the people of Telangana on the creation of India’s newest state.

He said, “We congratulate people of Telangana and we are very happy about formation of separate state of Telangana. We will go ahead with the development plank. We firmly believe that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will co-exist peacefully and progress rapidly.”

Japan encourages casual dress in workplace to save energy

The Japanese government Monday started a campaign to encourage people to dress casually in workplace in a move to avoid excessive use of air conditioners to save energy.

In contrast to common impression of Japanese workers who are always in suits with ties, the “Super Cool Biz” campaign is an improved version of the “Cool Biz” started 10 years ago, which allowed government employees to work without wearing usual suits, Xinhua reported.

During the “Super Cool Biz” period, workers are allowed to wear polo shirts, sneakers and even Hawaiian aloha shirts in offices.

Market cap of top 7 Sensex firms down by Rs 90,452 crore

The top seven Sensex companies saw a cumulative loss of Rs 90,452.18 crore in their market capitalisation (m-cap) last week, with energy majors ONGC and RIL taking the steepest hit.

The seven companies whose market valuation eroded in the week ended Friday (May 30) include RIL, ONGC, ITC, CIL, SBI, Infosys and ICICI Bank.

On the other hand, TCS, HDFC Bank and new entrant in the top 10 list Larsen & Toubro made gains.

The market capitalisation of ONGC dropped Rs 25,024.81 crore to Rs 3,23,611.41 crore, while RIL suffered a loss of Rs 20,266.28 crore to Rs 3,44,284.41 crore.

One arrested for raping 29-year-old woman at gunpoint

One of the accused in the rape case of a 29-year-old woman in Mumbai has been arrested on Monday while another accused is on the run. The woman was lured by two men on the pretext of getting her job and then raped at gunpoint inside a car outside Bhayander station on Friday.

The survivor had just completed an event management course and was in search of a job.

While one of the accused allegedly raped her, the other threatened her with a gun. The accused have been booked under sections 376, 377, 506 (2) and 34 IPC. And under sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act.
