Three held in Bengal gang-rape case, headman’s role being probed

Three people – two of them minors – have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in the gang-rape of a girl in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, with police reportedly looking into the role played by a kangaroo court led by a tribal headman to hush up the incident.

All three were picked up late Sunday by police probing the assault on a class 6 student at a village under Mohmmad Bazar police station last week.

“Two of those held are minors,” said a police officer.

Telangana gets two Deputy CMs

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday appointed two members of his cabinet as the Deputy Chief Ministers.

Mohammad Mahamood Ali and Dr T Rajaiah have been appointed as the Deputy Chief Ministers. While Mahmood Ali belongs to the Muslim minority, Dr Rajaiah is a prominent Dalit leader. With their appointments, KCR has fulfilled his promise of giving the Deputy CM post to a Muslim and Dalit. Mahmood Ali will also hold the portfolio of Revenue, Relief & Rehabilitation, ULC, Stamps & Registration. Similarly, Dr Rajaiah will have the portfolio of Medical & Health.

Telangana Govt appoints six Advisors

Chief Secretary of Telangana Dr Rajiv Sharma on Monday issued orders appointed six persons, including five retired IAS officers as Advisors to Government of Telangana.

Those appointed as Advisors are RVidyasagara Rao and retired IAS officers AK Goel, A Ramalaxman, BV Papa Rao, KV Ramana Chary and GR Reddy. These Advisors have been appointed for a period of one year. (INN)

Many Indians among 16 killed in Nepal bus accident

At least 16 people were killed and 58 others injured Monday when a bus carrying Indian pilgrims swerved off the road and plunged into a river in Nepal, officials said.

The accident took place on the Madi river at Gothibang in Pyuthan district.

Chief District Officer Ram Bahadur Karumbang said most of the deceased were Indians, and were from the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Nine people died on the spot, two died on way to hospital and five succumbed to injuries at the Pyuthan district hospital, police said.

No discrimination between similarly placed kids in nursery admission: SC

The Supreme Court Monday said that there could be no discrimination between similarly placed children seeking admission in nursery section as it issued notice to Delhi’s education department on a parent’s plea.

A bench of Justice J.S.Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan said this as counsel for the education department Rekha Pandey opposed the plea saying that there was an earlier order of the court that the benefit of admission to nursery classes would be limited to 24 children whose parents have moved the court.

Democratic order has collapsed in Bengal: CPI-M

Alleging that the democratic system has collapsed in West Bengal, the CPI-M Monday accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of unleashing violence on workers of all opposition parties and common people and urged the masses to unite in protest.

In an appeal to the people, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state committee said eight workers of the Left Front – a coalition led by it – had died in attacks by the Trinamool backed goons since April 10.

It put the figure of the Left Front workers killed since the Trinamool came to power in 2011 at 154.

Centre starts providing funds to Telangana

The government has started providing funds to Telangana, which on Monday became the 29th state of India.

“The Government of India has started devolving funds to the newly created State of Telangana from today, a finance ministry statement said.

K Chandrasekhar Rao, who had spearheaded the movement for separate state of Telangana, was today sworn in as Chief Minister of newly-carved out state.

As per the recommendations of 13th Finance Commission, the share of states in the central divisible pool is devolved to the states on every first working day of the month.

Sandstorm kills four in Tehran

A sandstorm killed four people and injured many others here in the Iranian capital Monday, media reports said.

Based on preliminary reports, 27 people were injured as the massive sandstorm engulfed Tehran, Xinhua cited Iran’s emergency chief Amin Saberinia as telling ISNA.

“Three people died as an uprooted tree fell on them and another fell down from the rooftop,” he said.

The storm, estimated to have a speed of 110 km per hour, hit telephone and power lines in the city.

Five killed in blast in rebel-held Ukraine building

At least five people were killed in a blast Monday in the rebel-held local administration building in Ukraine’s eastern city of Lugansk, officials said.

“Five people were killed. Many people among civilians were wounded,” Xinhua cited Konstantin Knyrin, head of the information centre, as telling Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

A fighter jet attack was possibly behind the explosion, sources said.

The sources claimed Ukrainian fighter jets were seen flying over the building prior to the blast.

Akhilesh orders women’s helpline to be set up in all districts

Rattled by the national outcry after the rape and killing of two minors in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Monday ordered the setting up of women helplines in all 75 districts of the state.

A statement issued by the chief minister’s office said senior superintendents of police/superintendents of police will be monitoring the helpline.

Women facing harassment or any other form of violence can use the helpline and a probe would be conducted by the women’s cell of police, it said. All such probes will also be monitored by district police chiefs, an official said.

Cabinet approves Telangana Govt logo

The Telangana Cabinet has approved the logo of Government of Telangana.

During its first and informal meeting chaired by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao at the State Secretariat on Monday, the Cabinet approved the logo. The logo, designed by noted artist Laxman Aelay, has two iconic monuments of Telangana, the Charminar and the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam besides the Ashok Chakra.
