Sonia asks Modi to fulfill promises made by UPA to Seemandhra

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to implement the commitments made by the previous Congress-led government to Seemandhra which include grant of special category status to it and execution of Polavaram multi-purpose irrigation project.

She said the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, by which Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh, contains various investment and other commitments by the government of India to Seemandhra region.

Assad votes in presidential poll

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cast his ballot here Tuesday in the country’s presidential poll.

Assad cast his ballot at a polling station in a school in the al-Maliki neighbourhood, Xinhua reported.

The three candidates are al-Assad, former minister Hassan al-Nouri and lawmaker Maher Hajjar.

Syria’s interior ministry said that more than 15 million registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 9,610 polling stations across Syria.

The polling stations will remain open from 7 a.m to 7 p.m.

Five prisoners escape from Bihar court

Five undertrial prisoners escaped Tuesday from a court in Bihar’s Jamui district, police said.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana said the five prisoners had been brought to the district civil court for a hearing.

“As per the preliminary inquiry into the incident, it was found that they fled through a tunnel in the custody cell in the court premises,” he said.

Rana said police have started a search operation to nab them.

Two of the five prisoners who fled were hard core criminals, police said.

Ali Faisal wasn’t uncomfortable working with Vidya

Actor Ali Faisal, who plays Vidya Balan’s love interest in “Bobby Jasoos”, says there was no awkwardness while working with the actress.

“Instead, it was very comfortable,” for Ali.

“She is easy going and there was no awkwardness that she is a married woman and such a senior actress. Maybe it was because of the workshops that we did together before we started shooting,” he added.

Ali will also be seen in a song and dance routine with Vidya and “there is a lot more than what you have seen in the trailer”.

Deeply shocked to learn of Munde’s death: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep shock over the death of Gopinath Munde, the rural development minister, who was killed early Tuesday in a road accident in the national capital.

“I am deeply shocked to learn about the news of sudden and tragic demise of Shri Gopinath Munde,” Banerjee said on her Facebook page.

“I personally knew him for a long time. It is a very sad news. May his soul rest in peace,” she said.

Iran, P5+1 set resume n-talks Wednesday

Experts from Iran and the P5+1 or the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, China, Russia, France, Britain plus Germany – will hold a new round of nuclear talks in Vienna June 4, the media reported Tuesday.

The two-day nuclear talks would begin Wednesday, Press TV quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry official Hamid Baeidinejad as saying.

The meeting will work on the details of a possible comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program ahead of a high-level nuclear meeting slated for June 16 in Vienna.

180 Google satellites to bring entire planet online

When you are busy chatting or surfing the internet, do you know that nearly 4.8 billion people – or two-third of the world’s population – are not yet online? This is going to change soon.

Google is planning to launch 180 satellites to provide web access for them, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The multinational firm is reported to be spending over $1 billion on the technology, to be developed by Greg Wyler, founder of satellite-communications start-up O3b Networks.

Yashwant Sinha arrested, sent to judicial custody

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yashwant Sinha was arrested for leading a demonstration in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh town and was sent to judicial custody Tuesday after he refused to furnish the bail bond.

A court in Hazaribagh Tuesday sent Sinha to 14 days’ judicial custody as he refused to furnish the bail bond.

Sinha was arrested Monday night after he led a group that held a demonstration at the state Electricity Board office in Hazaribagh. The demonstrators detained general manager Dhanesh Jha.

SC extends Tejpal’s interim bail till June 27

The Supreme Court Tuesday extended till June 27 the interim bail of Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal — accused of sexually assaulting his junior woman colleague — so that he could attend some of the rituals related to his mother’s death.

While extending the duration of the interim bail, the apex court bench of Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan brushed aside the Goa government’s objections to Tejpal’s plea for extension of the interim bail.

Munde died due to fracture of cervical spine, multiple tears in liver: Harshvardhan

Union Health Minister Harshvardhan said Tuesday that Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde had died because of injuries to his cervical spine and liver this morning in a car accident.

Talking to media here, Harshvardhan said that Munde also suffered minor physical injuries to his forehead, face and nose.

The fracture of his cervical spine and multiple tears in his liver led to his death, he added.

Woman, son burnt alive as house catches fire

A woman and her minor son were burnt alive while her daughter was injured when a fire broke out in their thatched house at Bhora Tola in Araria district, police said today.

Medina Khatun (25) and her two-year-old son Gul Afroz were burnt alive and her daughter Gul Nazar suffered injuries after their house caught fire late last night when they were asleep, police said.

The injured girl has been admitted to a referral hospital.

BSNL users can now access Facebook on mobile without Internet

State-run BSNL today launched a service wherein its mobile customers will be able to access Facebook without any Internet or data connectivity.

BSNL users will be charged Rs 4, Rs 10 and Rs 20 for 3 days, weekly and monthly plans, respectively, the company said in a statement.

The public sector telecom firm has tied up with U2opia Mobile to provide Facebook access through USSD in East and South zones immediately and shortly the service will be launched in West and North zones.
