Himachal to open generic medicine stores

The state government will open generic medicine stores in two medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh on a pilot basis, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Kaul Singh Thakur said Tuesday.

“Initially the generic medicines stores will be opened in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla and the Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda town, and subsequently these will be opened in all zonal hospitals,” he said.

Zindagi channel mourns Munde death at launch

A two-minute silence in memory of late Union Minister of Rural Development Gopinath Munde was observed here Tuesday at the launch of the new Hindi general entertainment channel — Zindagi – Jodey Dilon Ko.

Munde passed away in a car accident here Tuesday morning.

The channel officials and media persons from various media outlets at the event observed a two-minute silence before the launch function took off.

Driver arrested for hitting Munde’s car, gets bail

The driver whose car rammed into Gopinath Munde’s vehicle Tuesday, killing the union minister, was arrested but later released on bail by a court.

Gurvinder Singh, 32, was arrested from the spot, said police.

Singh was driving the Tata Indica car, DL 7C E5459, which hit the senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s Maruti Suzuki SX4 DL 8C BF0034 on the side he was sitting.

“We are investigating whether he (Gurvinder Singh) jumped the red light in the morning,” Joint Police Commissioner M.K. Meena told IANS.

’90 percent Indians believe climate change a reality’

Environment seems to be the top priority on the people’s mind with 90 percent Indians believing climate change is a reality, according to TERI’s Environmental Survey 2014 released Tuesday.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) survey says 41 percent middle income group people advocate environment should be prioritised compared to development.

In Delhi, over 90 percent respondents said climate change is occuring, 95 percent felt temperatures are increasing and 64 percent said rainfall is declining, the survey revealed.

It also said water is being wasted nationwide.

Driver involved in Munde accident not on hotel duty’

The Imperial Hotel Tuesday clarified that it had “no concern” with the vehicle and the driver involved in the car accident that led to Union Minister Gopinath Munde’s death Tuesday morning.

The driver, 32-year-old Gurvinder Singh, is a resident of Mehrauli area in south Delhi. According to reports, he was working as a driver with the hotel.

However, the hotel issued a clarification that he was not on hotel duty.

Two more convicts in Delhi gang rape case move SC

The remaining two convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape case — Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur — have moved the Supreme Court, seeking stay on execution of their death sentence.

The petition in this regard was filed by Sharma and Thakur Monday. The two have followed Mukesh and Pawan Gupta who moved the apex court March 15 challenging the March 13 order of the Delhi High Court, upholding their death sentence by a fast track court.

Oman minister meets Sushma, discusses ties

India evacuates its citizens from eastern Ukraine

The Indian mission in Ukraine has been facilitating the evacuation of nearly a thousand Indian nationals, particularly students, from the restive eastern region of Lugansk in the country, the Indian embassy in the Ukraine capital said.

A total of 27 students were received in Kiev by the Indian embassy till Tuesday afternoon, the embassy said in a statement available on its website.

“All the Indian nationals including students being evacuated from Lugansk would be lodged at Hotel Ramada Encore Kiev,” the embassy said.

UP police chowki cook attempts rape on minor girl, arrested

A cook at a police chowki in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, who allegedly attempted rape on a 15-year-old girl, was arrested and two policemen were removed from duty and sent to Police Lines after they initially refused to register an FIR.

Kotwal of Begnapur police chowki Shrawan Ram Saroj and in-charge Vinay Yadav were today sent to Police Lines after a preliminary inquiry.

According to police sources, the girl was collecting firewood near the police chowki yesterday afternoon when Chedi Lal, who used to cook for policemen, lured her to a room and tried to molest her.

Sri Lanka orders release of 29 Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of 29 Indian fishermen arrested by his country’s navy, announced Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin Tuesday.

The development came on the day Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

The fishermen, who are from Tamil Nadu, were arrested last week allegedly for poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Thalaimannar in the north of the country and handed over to the fisheries department.
