India evacuates 1,000 nationals from Ukrainian city

The first batch of 500 Indians, mostly students, are leaving violence-hit Ukrainian city of Lugansk to Kyiv Tuesday as India made arrangements to evacuate close to 1000 of its nationals from that city, the biggest such exercise after thousands of Indians were evacuated from Libya in 2011.

The evacuation arrangements were made in cooperation with the Ukrainian government, the Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said in New Delhi.

According to officials, Indian authorities have arranged 500 train tickets for today to evacuate the Indian nationals.

Govt keeping close watch on onion prices

With onion prices showing a marginal rise in some parts, the new government is closely watching the trend and is likely to restrict exports if the vegetable gets abnormally costlier.

Onions are costlier by Rs 5/kg in retail markets in most cities as compared to the last year prices. The vegetable is selling at Rs 21/kg in Delhi, Rs 22/kg in Kolkata and 27/kg in Mumbai, as per official data.

Founder of Sulabh sanitation movement Bindeshwar Pathak today said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi explaining how rapes could be controlled by building toilets for women who make themselves vulnerable to attacks by defecating in the open.

“This is the only measure as if they do not have toilets in the home and they have to go outside, even at night. If toilets are going to be built then our women would be more safe,” Pathak told reporters here.

Honda to double parts sourcing from India; eyes over Rs 800 cr

Japanese car giant Honda plans to nearly double sourcing of auto components, including engine parts, from India to over Rs 800 crore during 2014-15.

The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) is also planning to double exports of vehicles from the country to other parts of the world.

“We are targeting to increase our component exports and it will be nearly doubled. It will cross Rs 800 crore during the current fiscal,” HCIL Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Jnaneswar Sen.

Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft crashes, four killed

A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Mirage jet on a training mission crashed on Tuesday at a bus terminal on the outskirts of the city, killing at least four persons, including both the pilots.

The fighter plane crashed into the bus terminal in the Yousuf Goth neighbourhood and those killed included both pilots and two civilians.

Sajid Sadozai, a senior police official, said two buses parked at the terminal were destroyed while another was damaged. A number of nearby buildings also suffered structural damage.

Eight people on the ground were injured in the incident.

¾ tsp baking soda

Directions
Mix wet ingredients peanut butter, shortening and egg and butter in a bowl.
In a bigger bowl add sugar, salt and flour and almonds.
Add baking powder and baking soda into the dry ingredients.
Now mix all wet ingredients in dry ingredients, add slowly and mix well.

Sensex at record closing high as RBI cuts SLR

The BSE benchmark Sensex today jumped by nearly 174 points to end the day at all-time closing high of 24,858.59 as sentiment remained positive after the RBI pleased markets by unlocking about Rs 40,000 crore of banking funds by cutting the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR).

Boosting investor sentiment, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also allowed foreign portfolio investors to participate in the domestic exchange traded currency derivatives markets.

18 Indian pilgrims killed, 53 injured in Nepal bus accident

At least 18 Indian pilgrims were killed and 53 others injured when an overloaded bus carrying them veered off a mountain road and rolled about 100 meters before plunging into a river in western Nepal, officials said on Tuesday.

“All 18 people who died in the accident were Indian nationals, mostly from Uttar Pradesh,” Chief District Administrator Ram Bahadur Purumbang told PTI. A total of 56 people were injured in the accident when the bus plunged into the Madi Khola rive river in Pyuthan district, 750 km west of Kathmandu last night.

Sheikh Hasina condoles Munde’s death

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday wrote to her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi condoling the sudden demise of union minister Gopinath Munde. Bangladesh has “lost a good friend”, she said.

“You have lost a distinguished political leader and we have lost a good friend of Bangladesh,” Hasina said in a message.

Hasina said she was “deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the sudden and most unfortunate passing away of Munde” and extended condolences “to the government and the people of India and to the members of the bereaved family”.

Elections for Mizoram, Arunachal Rajya Sabha seats June 19

Elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Congress-ruled Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh will be held June 19, officials said Tuesday.

The tenure of sitting Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram, Lalhming Liana of opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), will end July 18 while the term of incumbent upper house member from Arunachal Pradesh, Mukut Mithi, ended May 26.

Last month the Congress returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh securing 42 seats in the sixty member house. In Mizoram, the Congress has 33 legislators in the 40-member assembly.

SC throws out Campa Cola society residents’ plea

The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed as “misconceived” and “non-maintainable” a plea by residents of Mumbai’s Campa Cola Housing Society to restrain BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation from evicting them.

The apex court bench of Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan, dismissing the plea, said the petitioners have held back from it the details of earlier proceedings and orders passed by it (apex court) in the matter.

Sensex ends at new closing high; metal stocks zoom

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets rose 173.74 points or 0.70 percent Tuesday, striking a new closing high of 24,858.59 points. Metal, oil and gas and capital goods stocks gained the most.

The market, which was trading cautiously ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bi-monthly monetary policy review, started falling soon after the apex bank left key interest rates unchanged. However, the bank’s decision to cut the liquidity ratio requirement for banks helped correct the sentiment.
