Iraq attacks and shelling kill 35

Violence across Iraq, including shelling of the conflict-hit city of Fallujah, killed 35 people today, as politicians haggle over forming a new governing coalition after April elections. Iraq is going through its worst protracted spell of violence since it emerged from a brutal Sunni-Shiite conflict that killed tens of thousands in 2006 and 2007, with near-daily attacks plaguing Baghdad and much of the north and west.

Telangana CM for making Hyderabad world class city

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao Tuesday directed officials to make Hyderabad a world class city by developing infrastructure to meet the requirements till 2050.

A day after taking over as the chief minister of the new state, Rao held a review meeting with the officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, asked the officials to focus on infrastructure development to attract more information technology companies.

Hyderabad airport gets ACI award

Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has been honoured with the “ACI Director General’s Roll of Excellence” award by the Airport Council International (ACI), in recognition of the airport being among the top three airports in the world for five consecutive years.

RGIA has now become the only airport in India to have received the distinction, said a statement from GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which operates the airport.

Bhanwari Devi murder case: CBI submits list of 18 witnesses

The CBI on Tuesday submitted a list of 18 witnesses to be examined during the initial period of trial in the Bhanwari Devi abduction and murder case.

The trial will begin on June 23 in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court here and the 18 prosecution witnesses will be examined in the first six days.

“We have provided a list of 18 witnesses to be called by the court from our side. They will be examined from June 23 to 28,” said CBI counsel Ashok Joshi.

President’s Rule needs to be imposed in UP: Kalyan Singh

Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh today said President’s Rule needs to be imposed in Uttar Pradesh, claiming that the state government has lost the moral right to remain in power in the wake of the gang rape and murder of two minor girls.

The monsoon is on schedule and is expected to hit Kerela in the next 48 hours, according to Met department.

“Conditions are favourable for the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala and its further advance into some more parts of south Arabian sea, remaining parts of Maldives- Comorin area, some parts of Tamil Nadu and some more parts of Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.

“Conditions are also favourable for advance of southwest monsoon into some parts of northeastern states during the next 72 hours,” said a statement by the Indian Meterological Department.

AAP activists accused of creating ruckus during press meet

Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust on Tuesday accused some AAP activists, led by its convener Arvind Kejriwal, of creating a “ruckus” at its premises and holding a press conference without prior permission from district administration.

Secretary of the trust, S K Mukerjee said that he would report the matter to the police for further legal action against the AAP activists.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal has described the incident as “highly unfortunate” and assured that the party will take care to avoid such incidents in future.

Astronomers have discovered a new type of planet – a rocky world weighing 17 times as much as Earth.

Theorists believed such a world couldn’t form because anything so hefty would grab hydrogen gas as it grew and become a Jupiter-like gas giant. This planet, though, is all solids and much bigger than previously discovered “super-Earths,” making it a “mega-Earth.”

Astronomer Xavier Dumusque of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), who led the data analysis and made the discovery, said they were very surprised when they realized what they had found.

NASA`s `flying saucer` set for first test flight

NASA’s flying saucer-shaped test vehicle is ready to fly from the US Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, for its first engineering shakeout flight.

The first launch opportunity for the test vehicle is June 3, when the launch window opens at 8:30 a.m. HST.

Michael Gazarik, associate administrator for Space Technology at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said the agency is moving forward and getting ready for Mars as part of NASA’s Evolvable Mars campaign.

He said that they have two more vehicles in the works for next year.

A study has warned against use of Resveratrol supplements, which is a plant compound found in the skin of red grapes and in peanuts and berries, among other plants by pregnant women.

The study revealed that a widely available dietary supplement that had been considered safe – and that some claim provides anti-aging and other health benefits – caused significant developmental abnormalities in the pancreas of offspring of pregnant monkeys who were given the supplement.

Accused driver had jumped red light, was speeding: Police

The 32-year-old driver of the cab, which hit Union Minister Gopinath Munde’s car in the wee hours here today at an intersection leading to his death, was allegedly speeding and had jumped the red light, according to police.

“An FIR has been registered against Gurvinder Singh under section 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304(A)(causing death by negligence) at Tughlak Road Police Station and he was arrested after prima facie he was found at fault of jumping the red light and over speeding,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.

AP: Seven killed in a building collapse

Six women and a girl were killed while 25 others sustained injuries when the concrete roof of a building collapsed in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district today, police said.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 PM at Nawabpet village in Mylavaram mandal of the district when the roof of the single-storeyed building, from where a group of people were watching a cremation procession, gave way, killing six women and a girl aged around 10 years, Jammalamadugu ASP Venkata Appala Naidu told PTI.

He said 25 others were injured in the incident.

Women jailed in UK over man ‘eaten alive’ by dog

Two women in the UK who admitted allowing their hungry dog to maul a 79-year-old man to death in his garden have been jailed for a year. Hayley Sulley, 30, and Della Woods, 29, both of Liverpool were charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act, after retired hospital porter Clifford Clarke died in May 2013. Clarke was “eaten alive” by the dog, which had not been fed for 45 hours, when he opened his back door.
