Haryana Police arrest two for Rs.80 lakh heist

Claiming to have cracked an over two-year-old case of looting of cash and jewellery worth Rs.80 lakh from a shop in Rohtak city, the Haryana Police Saturday said two persons were arrested in this connection.

A police spokesman said with the arrest of the two accused, Vicky and Rajaluhak, the Rohtak district police had solved the case in which cash and jewellery worth Rs.80 lakh were looted from a jeweller on Feb 7, 2012.

World needs genuine multilateralism: Ansari

Calling for a new paradigm of global action, India Saturday asked countries across the globe to work together to develop a framework for genuine multilateralism and seek common and fair solutions for challenges that transcend national borders.

Hamid Ansari said at the commemoration here of the 60th Anniversary of the signing of the Panchsheel agreement, which enunciates the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.

Himachal Pradesh: Beas tragedy exposed illegal sand mining

After the Beas tragedy brought to the fore the rampant illegal sand mining in interiors of Himachal Pradesh, the government has directed authorities to take firm steps to curb the practise and close all “illegal” approach roads to river banks.

Industries Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who visited the site at Thalot on Sunday, directed the Larji project authorities and Public Works Department to close all the link roads used for illegal mining activities and ban dumping of debris with in the limits of project area.

Pranab laments lack of quality higher education

President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday expressed regret that many higher education institutions in the country lacked the quality to produce graduates for global markets and no Indian university featured in the top-200 list.

The president called for quality teachers and good governance practices coupled with faster and transparent decision-making for building institutions with class.

He said this could be achieved by induction of reputed alumni into the governance mechanism of the institutions.

PM to launch Katra-Udhampur train on July 4

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a one-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on July 4, his first to the state after assuming office, official sources said.

The prime minister will arrive in Jammu and then proceed to nearby Katra town to inaugurate the Katra-Udhampur train that would cover a 25-km distance between the two places, the sources told IANS.

Katra is the base town of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine that is visited by millions of devotees every year.

Will inform once I resign: Bengal governor

Amid reported moves by the BJP-led union government to seek the resignation of UPA-appointed governors, West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan Saturday kept alive the speculation, saying he will inform the media once he steps down.

Five killed in blast at Alang ship breaking yard in Gujarat

Five persons were killed on Saturday and seven others injured when a blast triggered by a suspected gas leak took place in a ship being dismantled at the Alang ship-breaking yard in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat.

“Five persons were killed while seven others sustained injuries after a fire broke out following a blast in the ship which was being dismantled in plot number 140 at the yard,” Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) K J Rathod of Marine Police Station, Alang said.

Prima facie, the blast occurred due to sudden gas leakage when ship-breaking activity was in progress, the officer said.

Man blinded, shot dead in Bihar over love affair

In a barbaric act, a 22-year-old man was blinded and then shot dead Saturday in Bihar’s Patna district in front of his girl friend’s house allegedly by her close relatives in a suspected “honour” killing case, police said. Two people have been arrested.

Rahul Kumar was first mercilessly beaten, both his eyes gouged out, before he was shot dead at Daulatpur in Patna, a police official said.

The post-mortem report also revealed that both his eyes were badly damaged and he was shot twice.

Rajnath Singh’s remark on talks with Maoists disappointing: CPI

CPI on Saturday asked Maoists to give up violence and join the democratic process but expressed disappointment over Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks that there would be no talks with the left wing extremists.

At least ten people including three children were killed and several others are trapped under the debris as a three-storey residential building in Tulsi Nagar area of Inderlok, Delhi collapsed on Saturday.

Pune youth donates liver to save dying mom

A comatose Pune woman with a sudden and total liver failure got a new lease of life thanks to her son who promptly donated his liver. The operation was successful and both mother and son are recuperating at home after having been discharged from hospital, doctors said.

Gunwanti Gundesha, 49, was brought to the Global Hospital at Parel here a month ago (May 29), virtually in a dying state with her vital organ (liver) having completely failed.

Home Guard shot dead by wife beater

A Home Guard was shot dead in the city by a man after he tried to stop the latter from beating up his own wife early on Saturday, the police said.

The incident occurred at around 1 AM when home guard Raju Goala and constable Wahid Alam were patrolling Haridevpur locality.

Ashok Das, a resident of the area, had a quarrel with his wife and was beating her up at that time, the police said.

When Raju and Alam interfered and tried to stop Das, he snatched the service revolver of Raju in the melee and shot him.

Charges filed against top Yasin Bhatkal, aide

Maharashtra Police on Monday filed a supplementary chargesheet in a special Court in Mumbai against Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his aide Asadullah Akthar in the 2011 Mumbai bombings.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) submitted the 300-page document in which it has said Bhatkal was a key conspirator of the terror attack.

Three powerful blasts had ripped through crowded areas in Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Kabutar Khana on July 13, 2011, killing at least 21 people and injuring 141.

Will not tolerate if Sri Ram Sene creates problem: CM

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said the state government will not tolerate, if Sri Ram Sene tries to create law and order problem in Goa.

“Who does it is not important, neither the name (of the person) is. We will not tolerate anyone creating law and order problem in the state,” Parrikar told reporters, on Sri Ram Sene Chief Pramod Muthalik’s announcement to set-up its branch in Goa and oppose the pub culture.

Pakistani forces arrest senior Al Qaeda leader, kill 19 militants

Pakistani security forces, who are engaged in a major offensive in the North Waziristan tribal region, have arrested a senior Al Qaeda leader and killed 19 militants including a Taliban commander, the army said Saturday.

The ground forces used artillery and tanks to pound the hideouts of the militants and killed 19 of them over the past 24 hours, the army’s spokesman said.

France’s Sagna to not fast during World Cup

France defender Bacary Sagna will not fast during the holy month of Ramadan which begins during the FIFA World Cup, pointing out that Islam gives permission to Muslims to not fast in certain cases.

“As a Muslim I know some laws allow you to avoid fasting. I will not fast but I respect those who will practise it,” said the player of Senegalese origin, reports EFE.

Sagna is one of several French Muslim players who is facing the issue of fasting during World Cup. The list includes Karim Benzema, of Algerian descent, Paul Pogba, of Guinean descent, and Moussa Sissoko, of Malian descent.

Girl killed in Egypt blast

A girl was killed and her mother wounded in a blast outside Egypt’s capital Cairo Saturday, media reported.

The blast hit an unfinished telecommunications building of state-owned Telecom Egypt, the country’s fixed-line monopoly operator, in the 6th of October City outside Cairo, Xinhua reported citing the official news agency MENA.

The father of the killed girl is a guard at the building. The reason behind the explosion is not known yet.

Kolkata homeguard shot dead trying to prevent domestic violence

A Kolkata police home guard was shot dead Saturday with his own service weapon after he tried to intervene in a domestic fight and prevent a man from beating up his wife, police said.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday in Haridevpur in the city when Raju Gwala was shot by Ashok Das. He later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

“Gwala and a constable were patrolling the area when they saw Das beating his wife. He immediately rushed to spot and tried to pacify Das.

Blatter avoids commenting on Suarez

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has avoided commenting on the ban handed down to Uruguay striker Luis Suarez after he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 victory in the World Cup Group D match.

The 28-year-old Suarez was banned for nine international matches and suspended from participating in any football-related activity for four months. The sanction, which also includes a fine of 100,000 Swiss Francs, is scheduled to start Saturday when Uruguay take on Colombia in the Round of 16.
