Exam fear drives student to suicide

The fear of examinations drove a 28-year-old student to commit suicide by hanging himself at his residence on Saturday early hours.

According to Malkajgiri police, the deceased B Raghuram (28) an student S/o Tukaram Resident of Malkajgiri, took the extreme step of suicide by hanging with a ceiling fan at his residence on Saturday early hours.

Enquiries by the police revealed that Raghuram was afraid that he would fail in examinations scheduled to be held from next month. The fear of failing in examinations is suspected to the reason that drove Raghuram to suicide.

Toll in GAIL pipeline blast rises to 17, probe begins

The death toll in Friday’s explosion in a GAIL pipeline in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district Saturday rose to 17 while a high-level committee began its probe.

Two injured, including a five-year-old girl, succumbed at a hospital in Kakinada Saturday, taking the toll to 17.

The explosion and fire in the pipeline Friday morning killed 15 villagers in Nagaram village in the coastal district, about 550 km from here.

Officials said 21 injured were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Kakinada, Amalapuram, Rajole and Nagaram. The condition of seven of them is stated to be critical.

Six tea estate workers die of malnutrition in Bengal

At least six workers of a closed down tea estate in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district have died from malnutrition in the last six days, an official said Saturday.

All the six workers belong to the now closed Raipur tea estate on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri town.

“The deaths have been due to malnutrition,” a district official said.

With the family of one of the victims – Jit Munda – expressing their inability to cremate his body due to lack of money, the district administration came to the rescue.

The city police today claimed to have busted an international call routing racket with the arrest of three persons.

In call routing, incoming calls are received in the form of data through the Internet, and are converted back into voice call through VOIP gateways switch. The process bypasses authorised government telecom gateways, leading to revenue loss as well as posing threat to security, according to the police.

Two AP residents killed, 7 injured in road accident

Two persons, including a woman, were killed while seven others sustained injuries when their vehicle collided head on with a truck today at Kurali in Punjab, 30 kilometres from here, police said.

The accident took place when the victims, all residents of Andhra Pradesh, were returning from Manali in Himachal Pradesh to Chandigarh. When they reached Kurali, their vehicle collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction, investigating officer, ASI Kirpal Singh said.

An Indian national has been arrested in the US for threatening to kill his employee’s infant daughter, a media report said Saturday.

According to the police, 51-year-old Vijay D’souza, who owned Taste of India restaurant in Chesterton in the US state of Indiana, entered his employee’s apartment Tuesday and threatened to kill his infant daughter, The Post-Tribune reported.

D’souza, an Indian national, was arrested for misdemeanour battery charges.

Inquiry begins into Rajdhani Exp derailment

Inquiry began today into the derailment of New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express near Goldenganj station here on the wee hours of Wednesday that left four dead and 23 others injured.

Railway Safety Commissioner, Eastern circle, Kolkata, P K Vajpayee inspected the tracks and its nearby area as part of the probe.

While talking to reporters, Vajpayee did not rule out Maoist hand in the tragedy but said it could be confirmed only after the inquiry.

It would take at least a month for the probe report to come, the Rail Safety Commissioner said.
