GAIL pipeline fire: Jagan demands compensation of Rs 1 crore

YSR Congress president YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday demanded that Rs 1 crore be paid in compensation to each of the kin of 17 persons who lost their lives in the deadly blast and fire due to gas leakage in Nagaram village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan visited the village which bore the brunt of the blowout, which resulted apparently due to leakage of gas from a GAIL pipeline yesterday, and consoled the bereaved family members.

Delhi building comes crashing down, kills 10

Ten people were killed and two others injured Saturday in one of the worst building collapses in the capital in recent times when a four-storey structure came crashing down.

The collapse of the four-decade-old structure at 9 a.m. in north Delhi’s Inderlok area was triggered by an ongoing construction on an adjacent plot which apparently weakened its foundation.

“Ten people have been killed and two injured in the incident. We have registered a case against the contractor (Javed) for causing death by negligence,” said a police official. Some unidentified people were also booked.

Terror Blast in Bahrain, 3 Indians Injured

Three Indians have been injured in a terror attack in Bahrain’s capital Manama when a homemade bomb made out of a gascylinder was detonated, according to a media report.

The incident happened on Thursday night and the victims are now recuperating in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) in Manama, the Gulf Daily News reported.

The victims have been identified as Binoy Baby, 30, Jayabalan Markose, 47, and Anil Ebraham, 33.

Markose suffered 35 per cent burns to his body including his face, back and legs while the other two were treated for back and leg injuries.

One dead, over 50 trapped in building collapse in Chennai

At least one person was killed and 50 others were trapped when a 11-storey under-construction building collapsed here Saturday evening, officials said.

According to officials, 11 people trapped under the debris were rescued of which one person died. The other 10 have been admitted in a nearby hospital of which the condition of one is said to be serious.

The accident took place at Moulivakkam near Porur area here.

According to a fire service official, rescue efforts were continuing at full swing with several fire service personnel and ambulances at the spot.

Delhi University admission process to begin Tuesday

Admissions to Delhi University’s three-year undergraduate programmes will begin Tuesday as proposed by the committee of principals Saturday, a day after the controversial four-year programme was rolled back.

The dates for admissions was decided by the committee of principals which was constituted by Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh Friday to decide on the modalities for admission.

University sources said this was the most feasible proposal.

As per the proposal, the cutoff will be declared by the varsity Monday and admissions will begin Tuesday.

Gas mishap: Jagan demands more compensation

YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has demanded Rs one crore ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased in the pipeline blast and said that YSRCP MPs would submit a memorandum to the concerned ministry seeking adequate compensation to the injured and the farmers whose fields were set ablaze in the fire mishap.

Speaking to reporters after consoling the kin of those who lost their lives in the mishap, he said: This is not the first time that such incidents are taking place in this part of the state. It is sheer negligence on part of the oil companies which has led to this tragedy.

Muslims in Kerala will begin the month long fasting from tomorrow with the sighting of new moon this evening, heralding the holy month of Ramzan.

Save farmers from distress, YSRCP tells Naidu

Demanding the Chandrababu Naidu government to implement its poll promise of waiving all agriculture loans immediately, YSR Congress has said farmers are in distress as the sowing operation has to commence and there is no word from the state on this regard.

Call for humanitarian corridors to reach those displaced in Iraq

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has warned that aid workers could not reach tens of thousands of Iraqis displaced by the violence rocking the country and urged the establishment of humanitarian corridors to access those in need.

The IOM said Friday it, along with the UN’s World Food Programme and children’s agency Unicef, had been able to distribute relief to around 10,000 people in Iraq this month.
