Indian rocket’s Monday launch countdown on track

The countdown for the launch of an Indian rocket Monday morning that will carry five foreign satellites is progressing smoothly, the Indian space agency ISRO said Sunday.

According to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the countdown for the launch of rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C23) Monday 9.52 a.m is progressing smoothly.

The 49-hour countdown for the rocket’s flight started Saturday morning at India’s rocket port in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh around 80 km from here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to witness the rocket launch.

Four new polio cases detected in Pakistan

Four new polio cases have been detected in Pakistani areas bordering Afghanistan, a media report said Sunday.

Three of the cases were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one in North Waziristan, Dawn online quoted health officials as saying.

According to the Prime Minister’s Montoring and Coordination Cell for Polio, the families of the three children refused to have them vaccinated.

The fourth child, a two-year-old from Miramshah in North Waziristan, was not immunised due to the Taliban’s ban on vaccinations.

University students protest at minister’s house

Around 100 Delhi University students Sunday protested at Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s house here against the scrapping of a four-year undergraduate course.

The students are pursuing B.Tech and BMS courses. With the university reverting back to the three-year undergraduate programme, these students who opted for the four-year course feel they face an uncertain future.

The six B.Tech and Bachelors of Honours in Management Studies (BMS) courses will be rolled back and there will be no fresh admissions to them, the university said Saturday.

Saina Nehwal beats Marin in straight-game to win Australian Open Super Series finals

Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal bagged the USD 750,000 Australian Open Super Series women’s single title as she defeated World Number 11 Carolina Marin in a straight-game victory on Sunday.

Nehwal won the final in 43 minutes as she thrashed Spain’s Marin 21.18, 21-11 in Sydney.

This is Nehwal’s second title of the year, having won the Indian Open Grand Prix Gold in Delhi earlier. (ANI)

India to implement US foreign tax compliance act: RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said India and the US have agreed to implement a foreign tax compliance law and asked banks and financial institutions to register by this year-end to report accounts and assets held by US citizens.

India and the US have agreed to implement Foreign Accounts Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), a US law that targets tax non-compliance by US taxpayers with foreign accounts. The Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) on FATCA, which came into effect on April 11, will be signed only after Cabinet approval.

Chennai building collapse: Death toll rises to 9 as four more bodies recovered

Chennai rose to nine on Sunday as four more bodies were recovered from the rubble, police said.

While the five bodies kept in a private hospital in Porur were identified on Sunday morning, another four bodies kept in Royapettah Government Hospital were yet to be identified, police said. Of the nine killed, three are women, they said, adding, a total of 18 persons have been rescued and are being treated in two government hospitals – 17 in a private hospital in Porur and one in Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital.

Four Egyptian soldiers killed in ambush

Four Egyptian recruits were killed Saturday in an ambush set by anti-government extremists in the country’s North Sinai governorate, a security source said.

“The four recruits were coming back to the peninsula after a holiday and were not in security uniform,” the source said while speaking about the attack which occurred in Rafah city. “The extremist militants stopped them in an ambush, checked their identities, forced them out of the vehicle, and shot them dead.”

Woman paraded naked in UP village, husband beaten up

A woman was allegedly stripped and forced to walk around naked while her husband was severely beaten up for opposing “local goons” in Andryan village of Jehanabad area here.

The couple was allegedly made to go through the ordeal by Shanti Swarup and his associates on June 24 after they objected to trees being uprooted from their fields and damaging of their hut by the accused, police said.

“The couple was subjected to severe beating and the woman was forced to move around in the village naked,” police said.

Man asks nephew to rape wife, both get 10 years jail

A local court has sentenced a man to 10 years’ imprisonment for helping his nephew rape his wife so that she could conceive and give birth to a baby.

The nephew was also given a 10-year jail term.

Apart from the rigorous imprisonment, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on Raju and his nephew Naveen.

According to the prosecution, on January 12, 2010, Naveen raped Raju’s wife at the couple’s residence, with Raju holding her down.

Both were arrested by Narayanaguda police after the victim lodged a complaint.

Pipeline fire: Toll reaches 17, case of negligence against GAIL

The toll in the deadly blast and fire, apparently caused by leakage from a GAIL gas pipeline here on Saturday rose to 17, even as Andhra Pradesh police registered a case of negligence against the state-run firm.

Two persons, including a girl, succumbed to injuries today. The condition of five among the 20 injured who have received around 80 per cent burns remains critical, police said.

“A 4-year-old girl and a man died today at a private hospital in Kakinada. With this the toll has risen to 17,” East Godavari District Superintendent of Police G Vijay Kumar told PTI.

Cornet, ranked 24th, won 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to claim her second victory of the year over the world number one, reports Xinhua.

It is only the third time in 15 visits to Wimbledon that Williams has lost so early, and she has not been past the fourth round of a Grand Slam in 2014.

Man arrested for raping 19-year-old niece in Greater Noida

A middle-aged man was on Saturday arrested for allegedly raping his 19-year-old niece in Noida.

Police said the accused, Ranjit, raped his niece at his residence last evening when his wife went to the market.

The girl narrated the incident to her aunt after she returned home. The woman took the girl to the police station this morning and filed a complaint, following which Ranjit was arrested.

Police said the girl had been sent for medical examination.
