FIRs ordered against Gurgaon teachers

The authorities here Sunday ordered registration of police complaint against 11 school teachers, including six women, who did not turn up for duty to register new voters, an official said.

Teachers from various government schools here were deputed as block level officers for registration of new voters in Badshahpur assembly seat.

“School teachers Mamta, Suman, Poonam, Veenu, Shakuntla, Alka, Surender Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Vinod Kumar, Deepak Verma and Kuldeep were found absent from their duties,” an official told IANS.

Eight infants die in Bengal hospital

At least eight new-born babies have died since Friday at a government hospital in West Bengal’s Purulia district, an official said Sunday.

Confirming the deaths, Deben Mahato Sadar Hospital superintendent Nilanjana Sen said many of the babies were grossly underweight.

“Eight babies, all of them a few days old, have died in the last 48 hours. But this is not a news as all of them were grossly underweight and vulnerable,” Sen told IANS.

More than a dozen infant deaths took place in the hospital in June last year.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday said Israel is ready to expand its operation against the Islamic Hamas movement.

“Over the weekend, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked multiple targets in Gaza in response to firing at Israel from the Gaza Strip,” Xinhua quoted Netanyahu as saying at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting.

“We are ready to expand this operation as per need,” he added.

Two Amarnath pilgrims killed in rockfall

Two pilgrims were killed Sunday in a rockfall near the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The two were identified as Suresh Yadav, 35, resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, and Tara Singh, 26, resident of Punjab’s Bathinda.

“The accident occurred when the Yatris were nearing the cave shrine this morning. Stones rolled down the rocky mountainside hitting and killing the two yatris,” a police officer said.

“The Yatra is, however, continuing normally,” the officer added.

‘Mirza Sahibaan’ now renamed ‘Mirziya’

Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has disclosed that he has now renamed his movie “Mirza Sahibaan” as “Mirziya”.

“The film is now going to be called ‘Mirziya’. Just like I made ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ inspired by the life of Milkha Singh, ‘Mirziya’ is only inspired by the folklore,” Mehra told IANS exclusively.

He is here in Jammu and Kashmir as the patron of the Ladakh International Film Festival.

His movie stars newcomers Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of veteran actor Anil Kapoor, and Saiyami Kher, niece of Tanvi Azmi.

Delhi Police station heads to get Toyota Innovas

The 180 police stations across Delhi are set to be equipped with the swifter, roomier and cool-looking Toyota Innova vehicles, with the staid old Gypsies being relegated to the background.

Delhi Police already have around 600 of these multi-utility vehicles being used as mobile patrolling vans. Now the Innovas are set to be given to the inspectors heading each of the police stations in the national capital.

Delhi Police have requested the union home ministry to provide Innovas to all station house officers, sources told IANS.

Delhi jails to get hi-tech security systems

Hi-tech security systems will soon be installed in three prisons in Delhi, including the Tihar Jail complex, to ensure that surgical blades and other prohibited items are not smuggled inside, the government said Sunday.

“To improve and strengthen the security system in Delhi’s prisons at Tihar, Rohini district jail and the Mandoli jail complex, X-ray based full human body scanners, X-ray baggage scanners, multizone door-frame metal detectors and deep search metal detectors will soon be installed,” said a statement from the Delhi government.

2.83 goals scored per game in World Cup group stages

FIFA has announced its satisfaction about the performances delivered in the World Cup group stages.

An average of 2.83 goals were scored per game in the 48 first round matches while fan turnout reached an average of 98 percent with 2,454,377 spectators who went to see the matches, reports EFE.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said the current edition of the World Cup is one of the best, stressing on the increased passion the tournament has caused, reflected by TV viewership. The World Cup has also become the centre of attention on social networking sites.

Singapore keen to work on urban development with India

Singapore Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam will be here next week for discussions with the new Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on scaling up bilateral cooperation.

Shanmugam will discuss two-way cooperation in various sectors, including urban development, said Singapore High Commissioner Thuan Kuan.

Thuan Saturday met Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and conveyed his country’s keenness to collaborate on the sector.

Singapore is the second largest foreign investor in India.

The findings have revealed the causes and warning signs of rare tsunami earthquakes. This may lead to improved detection measures.

However, they create very large tsunamis. Some earthquakes that only measure 5.6 on the Richter scale generate waves that reach up to 10 metres when they hit the shore.

Malaria kills 55 in Tripura

A malaria epidemic has killed at least 55 people, including 46 children, in Tripura this month while thousands have fallen ill, officials said here Sunday.

“At least 55 people, including 46 children, have died in malaria since the first week of June,” a health department spokesperson said.

“Over 70,400 have fallen ill in malaria and fever after the outbreak of the disease. Of the 70,400 ill people, malaria germ was found in the blood of over 12,000,” the spokesperson told reporters.

Billy Connolly puts funny side up during health crisis

Billy Connolly’s wife says he was in a lot of pain after doctors missed a blood clot in his thigh, but despite that the comedian was cracking jokes.

The 71-year-old was rushed to a hospital in a taxi after he developed the deadly clot following surgery, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

His wife Pamela Stephenson said: “I knew it was a clot but the doctors weren’t listening to me. Eventually, I spoke to an intern on the phone, who said, ‘Just get him to the hospital right away!'”

‘Another two years for 4G technology to take off in India’

It has been quite some time that the Indian telecom industry is talking about the fourth generation (4G) technology but is the market and the subscribers ready for it? Iraq gets fighter jets from Russia

Iraq has received the first batch of fighter jets it ordered from Russia to help fight Sunni insurgents, the Iraqi defence ministry said.

BBC quoted the ministry as saying that five Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft would enter service in “three to four days”.

The deal with Russia “was aimed at increasing the firepower of the air force and the rest of the armed forces in order to fight terrorism”, the ministry said.

The insurgents control large swathes of the north and west of Iraq after they started marching over the past three weeks.
