Uruguay forward Diego Forlan believes that his team needs to be renewed after losing 0-2 to Colombia in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup here Saturday.

The 35-year-old said that the loss was normal, logical and it should not upset anyone because the team needs reviving through getting young players, reports EFE.

Forlan added that the fans’ love and appreciation is priceless and that his achievements in the World Cup were beyond his dreams.

Sushma reviews action plan on Iraq with Gulf envoys

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj here Sunday chaired a meeting of India’s envoys from Gulf countries to chalk out the future course of action to rescue Indian nationals stranded in violence-hit Iraq.

The meeting, also attended by the ambassadors of Gulf countries posted in India, reviewed the steps taken so far in this regard, ministry officials said.

India has set up three camp offices to facilitate the 10,000 Indians in non-conflict zones in Iraq in returning home.

Innocent will continue to work as AMMA president

Actor-turned-politician Innocent says he has been asked to complete his three-year term as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

The 69-year-old comedian contested the 16th Lok Sabha election as a Left-backed Independent from the Chalakudy constituency in Kerala and defeated Congress strongman P.C. Chacko.

“I had expressed my desire to resign from the post of the president (of the actors’ association) because I have new responsibilities as a Lok Sabha member. But it has been turned down,” Innocent, who has headed AMMA for the past 14 years, told reporters.

Uruguay defender Diego Godin expressed disappointment over the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup but said they are leaving Brazil with their heads held high.

“I feel sad. We wanted to keep moving forward. We can leave with our heads held high. We have nothing to reproach ourselves for,” the captain said, after losing 0-2 to Colombia in the Round of 16 match at the Maracana Stadium here Saturday, reports EFE.

Woman arrested after attempt to kill spider

A woman in the US has been arrested after she tried to kill a spider with fire, the media reported Saturday.

Ginny M. Griffith, 34, from Hutchinson, Kansas, was arrested Friday on an arson charge after fire tenders had to be called in to extinguish the blaze she started to kill the spider, Hutchinson News reported.

The woman told police that she had set some towels on fire to kill the arachnid.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within minutes, the Independent quoted a fire department official as saying.

GAIL hands over Rs.3.89 crore relief for blast victims

State-run gas utility GAIL Sunday handed over a cheque of Rs.3.89 crore to the East Godavari district collector for paying compensation to families of the victims of its gas pipeline blast two days ago in Andhra Pradesh.

“The disbursement of compensation to the individual eligible beneficiaries will begin tomorrow (Monday)”, GAIL said in a statement here.

The toll in Friday’s pipeline blast at Nagaram village East Godavari district rose to 19 Sunday, with one more of the injured succumbing to burn injuries in a local private hospital.

$365 million spent by World Cup tourists so far

Foreign tourists have spent $365 million during the first phase of the FIFA World Cup, Brazil’s sports minister Aldo Rebelo said.

Rebelo said the World Cup has a double impact this year as the expenditure of the tourists increased while that of Brazilians abroad decreased. He also praised the efforts of federal, provincial and municipal departments that led to a normal World Cup with small issues and huge success inside and outside the pitches, reports EFE.

World Cup celebrations kill woman in Colombia

A young Colombian woman was killed after she was hit by a stray bullet during celebrations of the country’s 2-0 victory over Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup Saturday.

The 25-year-old was taken to one of the medical institutes after being shot.

Colombia’s capital city Bogota’s mayor urged all fans to celebrate the qualification to the quarterfinals peacefully.

Fourteen other people also died while celebrating Colombia’s 3-0 win over Greece during the group stage June 14.

Saudi king pledges to crush terrorism

Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz has said his government was determined to confront terrorism and will adopt all measures to protect its citizens and expatriates, a media report said Sunday.

In his Ramadan message on Saudi Television King Abdullah expressed hope that militants who instigate terror in different parts of the world would return to their senses on realising that such activity goes against the teachings of Islam, the Arab News reported.

He said the militants are confused, as they are unable to differentiate between reform and terrorism.

Win over Chile compensates 2010 elimination: Cesar

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar expressed happiness over his side’s qualification into the quarterfinals of the World Cup by defeating Chile in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16.

Cesar said the win compensated the elimination from the 2010 edition in South Africa. The goalkeeper’s mistakes were one of the reasons Brazil were ousted from the quarterfinal’s four years ago against the Netherlands, reports EFE.

900 cases registered under drugs act: Himachal CM

Himachal Pradesh is committed to ending drug abuse, and 900 cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the state in the past few years, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said Sunday.

He said drugs illegally cultivated in 5,000 bighas have been destroyed.

The Congress Sunday demanded an independent investigation under the auspices of the apex court into the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board scam.

The scam is related to recruitment in various government jobs.
