The Indian government is trying to establish direct contact with its nationals stranded in conflict zones in Iraq, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Sunday after meeting their families.
The minister, who for a second time Sunday met the families of some of the Indians stranded in Iraq, assured them about the well-being of their kin.
Sushma Swaraj told reporters after the meeting that the information about Indians in the conflict zone has been collected through the Red Crescent and they are safe.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today expressed shock and grief over death of nine persons in building collapse on the outskirts of Chennai in Tamil Nadu today.
A 12-storeyed under construction apartment building collapsed late on Saturday and some laborers were feared trapped under the debris.
On hearing the ghastly incident, Naidu announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the bereaved families and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Students who registered for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme through Delhi University’s centralised admission forms will not have to apply again after restoration of the three-year degree course, officials said here Sunday.
A 12-member committee of principals said the students can directly apply to colleges once the cut-off lists are announced.
The committee was set up by the university Friday to look into the issue of admissions under the three-year format.

A 20-years-old youth has been arrested for raping and murdering her cousin sister in Visheshwarganj area here, police said today.
The girl was raped by her cousin brother Krishna Mohan Shukla alias Munna (20) Thursday when she had gone to collect
mangoes from an orchard. She was found dead in a nearby cane field, police said.
“Shukla was arrested yesterday for the rape and murder of his 11-year-old cousin sister,” Additional Superintendent of Police Sunil Singh said.
Singh said that during interrogation, Shukla admitted to his crime.

An Indian-American has been sentenced to 33 months in jail for distributing synthetic drugs in the US, media reported.
Amerjit Singh Grewal, 34, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison by the US District Court in Lancaster Thursday after pleading guilty to the unlawful distribution of bath salts and synthetic marijuana, The Sentinel reported Saturday.
A wanted criminal was today killed in an encounter with police in Lakhimpur district, police said here.
Padam Singh (40), wanted in a number of criminal cases, including that of murder and extortion, was injured in firing
during an encounter with the police at Shripalpur village in Maigalganj area of Lakhimpur, they said.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he died during treatment.
Two policemen were also injured in the crossfire. A country made pistol and cartridges were recovered from the
spot, they added.

CBI sleuths today arrested 13 candidates for the Assistant Railway Loco Pilot Examination even as it claimed to have busted a gang allegedly involved in leaking the question paper for the test.
According to a CBI spokesperson, an FIR has been registered for criminal conspiracy and cheating under various
sections of the IPC against Divisional Personal officer, Chief Vigilance Inspector of South Western Railways, an advocate, another person, besides the 13 candidates.

Police here Sunday arrested a man for causing the death of 10 people in a building collapse as he was illegally getting construction done on an adjacent plot.
Police said Mohammad Javed, 45, was arrested on charges of causing death by negligence for getting construction done on a plot adjacent to the four-storey building, but without taking permission from the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
“Javed started construction on his plot two months ago but he did not bother to take permission from the authorities concerned,” said a police official.
A study detailing how Facebook secretly manipulated the news feed of some 700,000 users to study “emotional contagion” has prompted anger on social media.
For one week in 2012 Facebook tampered with the algorithm used to place posts into user news feeds to study how this affected their mood.
The study, conducted by researchers affiliated with Facebook, Cornell University, and the University of California
at San Francisco, appeared in the June 17 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Sunday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for creation of the proposed Brahmaputra River Valley Authority (BRVA) by revamping the existing Brahmaputra Board.
The chief minister, in a letter to Modi, said the creation of the BRVA was of paramount importance to tackle the perpetual flood and erosion problem and water-related hazards in Assam and the northeast region as a whole.
The death toll in the 11-storey building collapse in Chennai Sunday went up to 11, officials said adding that 20 people rescued from the debris were admitted to hospital.
The under-construction residential building in Moulivakkam area in Porur collapsed Saturday evening, trapping over 50 people.
Citing the magnitude of the debris after the building turned into rubble in a matter of minutes, a fire service official said it would take at least another day to clear it.
GAIL (India) Limited Sunday suspended two senior officials pending enquiry into Friday’s blast and fire in its pipeline in East Godavari district, which killed 19 people.
“Pending the outcome of the enquiry set up both by the government as well as the company, two senior officials incharge of the regional operations and maintenance of the pipeline network have been suspended,” a statement by GAIL said.
The blast and fire caused by leakage of the gas from the pipeline burnt to death 19 people and injured 19 others in Nagaram village of East Godavari.
