Chris Gayle has been rested and Kieron Pollard has returned to a 13-man West Indies Twenty20 squad announced Sunday for the two-match series against New Zealand in Dominica next weekend.

UN chief deeply concerned over Iraq crisis

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon Sunday voiced deep concern at “the deepening crisis in Iraq and the rising number of civilian deaths and injuries”, calling for an immediate end to the “persecution of civilians based on their religion or ethnic background”.

“The secretary-general expresses his grave concern at the deepening crisis in Iraq and the rising number of civilian deaths and injuries, with over one million Iraqis having fled their homes due to the fighting,” Xinhua quoted a statement issued here by Ban’s spokesperson.

Ukraine urged to extend ceasefire

Leaders of Russia, Germany and France urged Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to extend the ceasefire that will expire Monday in a teleconference held Sunday, the Kremlin press service said.

“The leaders stressed the necessity to make such contacts regular. They called on Poroshenko to extend the ceasefire regime for a longer period,” it said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande also hailed the release of observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission in Ukraine, Xinhua reported.

Nigerian president condemns terror attacks

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned recent bomb attacks in the Bauchi and Kaduna states.

Two attacks on villages in Kaduna state Monday night claimed at least 38 lives while scores of several others sustained injuries.

The police in Bauchi state Sunday confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in an attack by gunmen who unleashed terror at a brothel.

In a statement released Sunday, the Nigerian leader expressed his administration’s determination to bring the perpetrators to justice.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal Sunday said the BJP was avoiding elections in Delhi as it was scared of losing.

“We will win Delhi for sure but the question is whether the BJP wants elections to be held,” Kejriwal said during an interaction with Aam Aadmi Party volunteers on Google Hangout.

The former Delhi chief minister alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to break away Congress legislators in its bid to form the government in Delhi.

Clashes intensify as Iraqi forces battle militants in Tikrit

Fierce clashes erupted in Tikrit as the Iraqi security forces tried to wrestle back the control of the city from Sunni militant groups Sunday, security sources said.

Helicopter gunships pounded neighbourhoods in and around the Salahudin provincial capital of Tikrit, 140 km north of Baghdad, as the troops held control of the Tikrit University in northern part of the city, Xinhua quoted a provincial police source as saying.

In an air strike, the helicopters bombed a house in Tikrit’s al-Uwinat area, leaving nine people killed, the source said.

Indians in Iraq safe, trying for direct contact: Sushma Swaraj

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday said Indians in Iraq were safe and efforts were on to establish direct contact with those in conflict zones there even as she chaired a meeting of envoys in the Gulf region to chalk out measures to rescue citizens from the violence-hit country.

The minister, who again met the families of some of the Indians stranded in Iraq, assured them about the well-being of their kin.

Sushma Swaraj told reporters afterwards that the information about Indians in the conflict zone has been collected through the Red Crescent and they are safe.

After making incursion bids in Ladakh through land route, Chinese troops have made several attempts to enter Indian waters at Pangong lake nestled in the higher reaches of Ladakh with the latest incident reported on Friday.

Railway officials arrested for leaking exam question papers

A chief vigilance inspector of south western railway and 14 other people were arrested in Bangalore for leaking the question papers for a recruitment exam for the railways, the CBI said Sunday.

The inspector and the other people were arrested for leaking of question papers and answer keys for the recruitment of assistant loco pilot, telecommunication Grade III and technicians Grade III from various places in the Karnataka capital, said a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official here.

An advocate who acted as middleman in the scam was also nabbed, the official said.

Tamil Nadu Governor Konijeti Rosaiah Sunday took over additional charge of neighbouring Karnataka too following incumbent H.R. Bhardwaj’s five-year tenure coming to an end.

Karnataka High Court Chief Justice D.H. Waghela administered the oath of office in English to the octogenarian Rosaiah at a simple ceremony held in the glass house on the lawns of Raj Bhavan.

Another international drugs racket busted in Punjab

Punjab Police Sunday claimed to have busted another international drugs smuggling racket, and said five smugglers and a hawala agent have been arrested and over 27 kg of heroin seized after a 10-day operation.

Puri Ratha Yatra witnesses massive turnout

More than seven lakh people Sunday thronged the streets in Odisha’s temple town of Puri to witness the world famous Ratha Yatra, officials said.

Although some rituals were performed behind schedule, the ratha yatra passed off without any trouble, temple spokesman Laxmidhar Pujapanda told IANS.

The ‘Mangala Aarti’ was performed at 8.20 a.m. after a three-hour delay. The ceremonial procession of the deities known as ‘Pahandi’ – carrying the deities on chariots out of the temple – started around 11 a.m., he said.

Three on trial in Egypt for spying

Egypt’s top prosecutor has referred three suspects, including two Israelis, to the criminal court on charges of spying for Israel, media reported.

The Egyptian, currently in custody, will be tried before a criminal court in the Suez city of Ismailia, while the other two fugitive Israeli military intelligence officers will be tried in absentia, Xinhua quoted the official MENA news agency as saying.

The date of the trial was yet to be fixed.

The Egyptian suspect confessed during investigations that he received money in return for giving information to the Israeli intelligence.

US sends another warship to Persian Gulf

The US has sent another warship to the Persian Gulf with 1,000 marines on board as clashes between Iraqi forces and Islamic militants intensified Sunday, the media reported.

The USS Bataan will join seven other American warships — the USS Arleigh Burke, the USS Truxton, the USS Gunston Hall, the USS George HW Bush, the USS O’Kane, the USS Philippine Sea, and the USS Mesa Verde — in the Middle East, CNN reported.

American helicopters and warplanes have already been deployed in the strife-torn country and can be used for a military invasion.

A former administrator of a multinational company accused in a rape case has been arrested from Maharashtra, police said Sunday.

Rohan Jagdale, 35, was arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Pune two-and-half months after a case was registered against him.

A police team headed by officer Sandeep Kumar camped near Pune for nearly a month.

Jagdale was arrested on information provided by his friend Anupam, who was held June 27, a police officer said.
