Retired Indian security personnel must be allowed to settle along the Bangladesh border to be New Delhi’s “eyes and ears” vis-a-vis illegal migration, a former BSF officer says.

Retired Border Security Force (BSF) Additional Director General PK Mishra also warns that India’s failure to stop the growing illegal influx of Bangladeshis could one day turn Assam into “another Bosnia or Kashmir”.

No surrendering to Iran”s nuclear ambitions: Israeli PM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the P5+1 countries not to surrender to Iran ahead of a deadline for a permanent nuclear deal, media reported on Monday.

Netanyahu Sunday said in a statement that Iran should be stripped of its uranium enrichment capacities, Xinhua reported.

According to the statement, Netanyahu said that Iran is “interested in obtaining a surrender agreement from the West”, and that Iran should not get this desired agreement.

The West has demanded that Iran dramatically lower its uranium enrichment capacity to only a few hundred centrifuges.

Xiaomi to make India debut on Flipkart

Following the footsteps of Motorola, Chinese handset maker Xiaomi is also teaming up with e-Commerce major Flipkart to launch its handsets in India.

Touted as the ‘Apple’ of China, Xiaomi had launched its official website in India earlier this month, announcing its entry into the fiercely competitive Indian smartphone market in the next few weeks.

According to sources, Xiaomi is expected to bring two smartphones in partnership with Flipkart in the next 2-3 months.

Oil prices down in Asian trade, may rise due to Middle East crisis

Oil prices eased in Asia on Monday on softer United States demand, but tensions in the Middle East, where jihadists have declared an Islamic state straddling Iraq and Syria will likely keep prices high, analysts said.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August delivery was down 26 cents at US $105.48 a barrel in late-morning trade and Brent crude dropped 22 cents to US $113.08.

Sensex surges 142 points in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex spurted nearly 142 points in early trade today on the back of across-the-board buying by funds and retail investors on hopes that the reform measures in next week’s Union Budget will boost the country’s economic growth.

The BSE 30-share barometer, which had gained 37.25 points in Friday’s session, rose 141.73 points, or 0.56%, to 25,241.65 with all the sectoral indices, led by consumer durables, capital goods and power, trading in positive zone with gains up to 0.93%.

Government to consider setting up more agriculture universities in northeast

Development in the northeast region is a top priority of the government. Recently, the union agriculture minister has agreed to look into the possibility of setting up new agriculture universities and research centers in the northeast.

CRPF, Maoists exchange gunfire in Jharkhand

Security forces and Maoists on Monday exchanged gunfire near Badkitand village in Giridih district.

Jawans of the CRPF’s 26th battalion rushed to the village after getting information that the rebels had assembled there, Superintendent of Police Kranti Kumar said.

On sighting the security force, the left-wing guerrillas fired at them and in the strong retaliatory action the Maoists retreated deeper into the forests, Kumar said.

There was no loss of life on either side.

Two killed in mishap in UP

Two persons were killed and another injured when their car collided with a truck near Sindhawli village on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway in the district, police said on Monday.

The accident took place yesterday when the victims were returning to Delhi from Haridwar.

The deceased have been identified as 35-year-old Deep Chand and 40-year-old Anoop Negi.

The injured identified as Pradeep has been referred to a hospital in Delhi.

Researchers have discovered a new form of neurotransmission that influences long-lasting memory created by addictive drugs like cocaine and opioids and the craving for them.

Loss of this type of neurotransmission creates changes in brain cells that resemble the changes caused by drug addiction.

The findings suggest that targeting this type of neurotransmission might lead to new therapies for treating drug addiction.

“Molecular therapies for drug addiction are pretty much non-existent,” said Collin Kreple from the University of Iowa in the US.

Volcano erupts at Mount Sinabung in Indonesia

One of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, Mount Sinabung, has erupted with a powerful burst of hot ash, a media report said Monday.

According to officials, the eruption occurred late Sunday with 4,000 metre high column of ash spewed to the sky, Xinhua reported.

Mount Sinabung located in Sumatra had erupted intermittently from September to February after being dormant for 400 years, left 15 people dead and more than 30,000 displaced.

“Until now, the number of evacuees have escalated to 14,382,” an official said.

Sebi plans surprise inspection of ‘paper’ cos

Budget 2014: Cotton textile industry has potential to invest upto Rs 4,000 crore

The cotton textile industry has a potential to invest up to Rs 4,000 crore leading to generation of 50,000 new jobs if the government accepts the sector’s demands in the forthcoming Budget, a top industry official has said.

“We have urged the government that Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) should be extended during the blackout period from June 29, 2010 to April 27, 2011, when the scheme was suspended to all cases which have been left out for no fault of the industry,” Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council of India (Texprocil) Deputy Chairman R K Dalmia told PTI here.

Delhi University’s 2013-14 BTech batch to be of 4 years

In a relief to hundreds of students, the Delhi University was on Sunday directed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to continue with the fouryear BTech programme for those admitted in academic year 2013-14, bringing to an end the uncertainty following rollback of the controversial four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).

The directive by the UGC came even as scores of BTech and BMS students of DU staged a protest outside the residence of human resource development minister Smriti Irani, demanding that their four-year courses should not be scrapped.
