Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governor K Rosaiah today congratulated scientists of ISRO on the successful launch of PSLV C23 carrying SPOT-7 and four co-passenger space crafts from Canada, Germany and Singapore.

“It is a matter of great pride and a historic moment in the annals of ISRO. We have again proved that we are second to none in space science and technology. The day of India emerging as a super power is not far off”, Rosaiah said in a release.

Gayle rested, Pollard recalled to Twenty20 squad

Flamboyant opener Chris Gayle has been rested and Kieron Pollard is back in the West Indies Twenty20 squad for the two-match series against New Zealand next weekend in New Zealand.

The 34-year-old Gayle has struggled with injury in recent months but still managed to score two half-centuries in the ongoing three-match Test series, reports CMC.

He sought medical treatment in Germany prior to the current series but has not yet returned to full fitness.

In his absence, West Indies will have Kieron Pollard who is now set for his first taste of international cricket in nearly a year.

Humid day ahead for Delhiites

Delhiites woke up to a humid morning today with the minimum settling at 25.2 degree Celsius, two notches below normal.

Met Department said the the humidity level rose to 82 per cent, leaving Delhiites sweating.

The mercury will remain below the 40 degree mark today, as the maximum temperature is expected to settle at 38 degree Celsius.

“There will be a partly cloudy sky and very light rains and thunderstorms could occur in some areas,” MeT department officials said.

The minimum temperature recorded in the last 24 hours is 25.2 degree Celsius, 2 notches below normal.

Soon, Microsoft to add folder support in Windows phone 8.1: Report

Microsoft is reportedly planning to support folders for apps on the Start Screen.

According to The Verge, the method will work similar to iOS , where you drag one tile on top of another and it creates a folder that can then be renamed. Apps can then be accessed from within the folder.

However, to create folders on the start screen one needs to have Windows phone 8.1 update installed on their phone.

Rupee up 7 paise against dollar in early trade on Monday

The rupee strengthened by seven paise to 60.01 against the American currency in early trade on Monday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on selling of dollars by exporters and banks.

A higher opening in the domestic equity market and a weak dollar against other currencies overseas on a string of disappointing US data last week also supported the gain in the rupee, forex dealers said.

The rupee had closed six paise higher at 60.08 against the dollar in Friday’s trade on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters amid moderate gains in stock markets.

An imam in Mumbai has said that the Muslim fasting month of Ramazan is a time for penitence and to seek forgiveness for sins committed in the past from Almighty Allah. Other devotes said that it should be seen as celebratory event for both Muslims and Hindus.

Imam Sunni Raza Masjid told ANI here, “It (Ramazan) is a holy month for us. We pray to Allah. All our sins are forgiven.”

Hamas slams EU’s criticism over missing Israeli teenagers

Hamas slammed the European Union (EU) for criticising them for the abduction of three Israeli teenagers from the West Bank, media reported Monday.

“The EU’s criticism of Hamas is just a courtesy and hypocrisy to the occupation of Israel,” Xinhua quoted a Hamas spokesman as saying Sunday.

“The EU should also criticise Israel for kidnapping more than 5,000 Palestinians,” the spokesman said.

“Instead of just crying for the disappearance of the three Israeli teenagers, the EU should exert every possible effort to end the abduction of Palestinians in Israel,” the spokesman added.

June national rain average deficient by 42%: Skymet

The national cumulative average of rainfall in June is deficient by a whopping 42 per cent, making it only the 12th instance in the past 113 years when rain shortfall was over 30 per cent in the month, according to a private forecasting agency.

States like Gujarat and Rajasthan have over 80 per cent of deficient rain.

The respite is that monsoon is likely to revive in the first week of July and rain is expected in the national capital and northwest plains from July 5, the agency added.

Jo Swinson, the employment relations minister, said the changes would boost the UK economy because productivity would rise with happier employees.

Under the new rules, 20 million employees across the country are entitled to ask for flexible hours, including working from home. Employers will be obliged to consider requests reasonably, and millions are expected to take advantage of the changes.

Work on Agartala-Akhaura railway link to begin next year

The proposed 15-km long railway link from Agartala to Akhaura will bring economic prosperity and strengthen people to people contact between India and Bangladesh.

An eight-member delegation from Bangladesh recently met their Indian counterparts during the third meeting of the Agartala-Akhaurah railway Link Project Steering Committee in Agartala.

They did a field inspection and visited Agartala railway station and Nischintapur, the bordering village from where the proposed rail line will enter Bangladesh.

Manipur drivers protest against frequent abductions by militants

The inter-state passenger services from Imphal came to a halt recently after members of All Manipur Night super drivers’ welfare association went on strike to protest against the abduction of a bus driver.

They also staged a sit-in protest to demand the safe release of Thokchom Ingobi, a bus driver abducted on June 13 from a hotel at Jakhalabandha in Assam, while he was ferrying passengers from Guwahati to Imphal.

Cadres of the KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman) group are suspected to be behind the abduction.

North Korea test-fires two short-range Scud missiles

North Korea has reportedly test-fired two short-range missiles into the eastern waters.

According to the BBC, a defence ministry spokesman in Seoul said that the missiles were Scuds with the range of 500km (310 miles).

The country launched the missiles ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to South Korea to discuss the North’s nuclear weapons program.

The country has often test-fired short-range missiles and rockets in the past and is thought to have sufficient nuclear material for a small number of bombs.

Modi makes brief stopover in Chennai en route to Sriharikota

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, made a brief stopover in Chennai this afternoon, on the way to Sriharikota to witness the launch of ISRO’s PSLV C-23 rocket.

He was received by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, K. Rosaiah, and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa.

The Prime Minister later had a courtesy meeting with Jayalalithaa , before leaving for Sriharikota.

The indigenous PSLV-C23 rocket, carrying satellites of France, Germany, Canada and Singapore, will be launched tomorrow from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) in Sriharikota. (ANI)

Sushma reassures families of abducted Indians in Iraq

External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj assured those families whose members have been abducted in Iraq that all efforts are being done to rescue them during her meeting with them today.

At the end of the meeting the families were reassured that the government is doing everything under its capacity.

“Those who are held captive from Punjab (in Iraq) their families came to meet me, they had also met me on the 19th. They came here to know about the developments in the past 10 days,” she said.

In Tripura BSF brings smiles to children with cleft lips and palates

The security forces in the northeast are extending a helping hand to provide medical help to locals. Recently, the Border Security Force organised a medical camp for children with cleft lips or palates in Tripura. The corrective surgeries were performed free of cost at the camp.

In a two-day long medical camp at Salbagan in West Tripura, the BSF doctors successfully performed surgeries on 13 patients suffering with cleft lips and palates.

The camp was organized by the BSF Wives Welfare Association in collaboration with the Smile Train and Rotary club of Kolkata.

India making efforts to rescue nationals stranded in Iraq: Civil Aviation Minister

Union Civil Aviation Minister, P Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Sunday disclosed the efforts made by the Government on the rescue operations to bring back those stranded in Iraq.

“Government of India is naturally concerned as there is a strife torn situation there in Iraq. Those Indians who want to come back they have to be helped. Certain strategies have been put in place, civil aviation is part of it. How best to evacuate them, this is an important thing,” he said.

“Three Air India planes have been arranged for the purpose,” he added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa on Sunday, attributed the cause of the building collapse due to structural defect and the builder violating various norms.

Speaking to the reporters after visiting the site, she said, “It appears that the building plans that were approved were not strictly adhered to by the builders. There was nothing wrong with the plans that were submitted for approval. But the builders knowingly committed many violations and didnot adhere to the plans that was approved.”

Bangla taking stern action against anti-India activity

Border Guard Bangladesh has said it has “zero tolerance” towards any anti-India activity including those by insurgents and was taking “stern” steps in this direction.

However, the force refuted media reports about anti-India fidayeen camps operating from Bangladeshi territory.

“I have never heard of such camps or any such knowledge of them,” BGB (ADG) Brigadier General Md Latiful Haider told PTI in an interview here.
