Law and order has improved in JK, says outgoing DGP

Outgoing Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Ashok Prasad today said the increased police-public interaction over the past two years had resulted in successful operations against militants and improved law and order situation in the valley.

“Over the past two years, public-police interaction has increased. Our operations, be it against militancy or on the law and order front, have been successful due to the people’s cooperation,” Prasad told reporters here after he was given a farewell at Zewan Police Complex.

Syrian rebels kill 20 troops in tunnel blast

Syrian rebels blew up a tunnel packed with explosives in the northern city of Aleppo killing at least 20 pro-government fighters, activists and rebels has said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group said yesterday the blast took place near the Zahrawi market not far from the citadel in Old Aleppo. It said clashes followed the explosion.

Volcanic ash grounds flights in Australia

Ash plumes billowing from an Indonesian volcano have cut off all air services to Darwin city in Australia’s Northern Territory and grounded flights to Bali, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, the media reported Saturday.

The Sangeang Api volcano off the Indonesian island of Sumbawa has been erupting after an initial blast Friday afternoon, Skynews Australia quoted the Bureau of Meteorology’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin as saying.

Darwin International Airport was closed to all inbound and outbound flights Saturday, and Bali’s airspace has also been affected.

Jung asks officials to review water, power related issues

Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung Saturday directed officials to review and assess issues related to water and power supply in Delhi following Friday’s thunderstorm.

At a meeting with officials of the Delhi Jal Board and the power department, and divisional commissioners, Jung asked them to take the necessary steps to alleviate the problems being faced by the public following the storm.

Besides, he asked divisional commissioners to survey and assess the damage and directed them to give ex-gratia/relief to affected families.

Article 370 debate intended to change discourse: Yasin Malik

JKLF chief Yasin Malik, claiming that the design behind the article 370 debate raked up by a union minister was to change the Kashmir discourse from independence to centre-state relations, Saturday said his party would soon start a “Quit Kashmir” movement.

“There is a design behind the Indian junior minister’s statement that article 370 would be revoked. There is a storm of debate over this in India and also in Kashmir. Everywhere in Kashmir people are discussing the fate of article 370,” said the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman.

Fire at railway guest house in Delhi

A minor fire broke out in the railway guest house located close to a busy market in the heart of the capital, a fire official said. No casualty was reported.

“Eight fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire after it was reported at 6.50 p.m.,” an official of Delhi Fire Service told IANS.

The fire was on the second floor of the building that houses the guest house near Shankar Market in the bustling Connaught Place area.

HRD minister intervenes, DU VC denies suspending officials

Following HRD Minister Smriti Irani’s intervention, Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh Saturday said no suspension order was issued to five officials for leaking documents related to her educational qualifications.

Friday, DU joint dean of students’s welfare and media coordinator Malay Neerav confirmed the report that five non-teaching staff below section officer level of the School of Open Learning (SOL) were suspended for leaking documents pertaining to the minister.

AP High Court to be renamed from June 2

In view of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, The High Court of Andhra Pradesh will be renamed with effect from June 2, the Appointed Day.

According to a notification issued by the Registrar General, Under Section 30 of AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the name of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh shall be “High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh” with effect from 2nd June, 2014. New York Times executive editor admits clash with Jill Abramson led to her firing

The New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet has revealed that there were times when he got so frustrated with his higher-ups, incluidng Jill Abramson, that he punched holes in the newsroom walls.

“It’s true” he told he said NPR’s David Folkenflik.

When asked about the maps that have been strategically placed to hide the damage in the Washington bureau, Baquet said that he does have a “temper,” the New York Post reported.
He said that in every case he had become mad at somebody above him in the rank, adding that it’s not an excuse, but a fact.

Over 48,000 students skip inter supplementary exams

As many as 48,083 candidates have abstained from the Intermediate Public Advanced Supplementary Examinations held in two sessions across Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

While 35,922 or 7.28% of 493,504 registered candidates abstained from the Chemistry I, Commerce I and Socio I exams held in the morning session, a total of 12,161 or 10.6% of 113,736 registered candidates did not appear for the Chemistry II, Commerce II and Socio II exams. As many as 30 candidates have been booked for malpractice in both the exams.

Mother sells newborn in Bengal, child rescued

Forced by abject poverty, a woman sold her newborn child for Rs.13,000 to a childless couple in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, an official said Saturday.

The baby born May 25 has been now rescued and is in the care of the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

“The mother is a slum dweller and begs for a living. She sold the newborn — her fourth child — for Rs.13,000. After we got to know about it, we traced the baby and he is now under the care of CWC,” an official of the district social welfare department told IANS.

Ponnala writes to PM opposing renaming of RGIA

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee President Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Saturday strongly opposed the proposal to rename Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad after former Chief Minister late NT Rama Rao.

In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ponnala said that renaming the airport would be an insult to former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi who laid down his life for the country. He requested the Prime Minister to ensure that RGIA’s name remains unchanged.

Uphaar fire: Court orders framing of charges in evidence case

A court here Saturday ordered framing of charges against real estate barons, Ansal brothers Sushil and Gopal, and five others in a case of alleged tampering with evidence in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal ordered framing of charges against the seven accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code including 109 (abetment of offence), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

The court fixed the case for further hearing on Oct 9.

Online connectivity between ranges, head office launched by DG Acb A K Khan

A.K.Khan,IPS., Director General, Anti-Corruption Bureau has launched online connectivity of Range Offices with ACB Headquarters Office through APSWAN Net work and dedicated the same to the ACB. Earlier, as a part of IT Development in the Bureau, the ITE & C Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh had sanctioned Rs.25 lakhs for implementation of computerization in the ACB basing on the project report submitted by the Bureau.

SHC selects 200 Haj pilgrims from waiting list

Andhra Pradesh State Haj Committee Special Officer Prof SA Shukoor announced that 200 Haj Pilgrims under Waiting List have been provisionally selected for the Haj 2014.

The Special Officer has requested the selected pilgrims to pay their first installment of Haj amount i.e. Rs. 81,000/- per head on or before 9th June 2014 in the Account of Haj Committee of India in the SBI through Core Banking. The pilgrims should obtain their Bank refernce Numbers before making the payment, as the number has to be quoted on the Bank Challan.

Sania-Cara in third round of French Open

India’s Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black cruised into the women’s doubles third round of French Open tennis here Saturday.

The fifth-seeded Indo-Zimbabwean pair won 6-1, 6-2 against Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Alicja Rosolska of Poland.

Sania and Cara completely dominated the match and won two break points in the first set. In all they won 57 points while Gabriela and Alicja won 37 points.

Sania and Cara will now face Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and Russian Alisa Kleybanova, who got a walkover from Sharon Fichman and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Iran nuclear issue: Expert-level talks set for next week

Iran and six world powers will hold an expert-level meeting on the nuclear issue in Vienna next week, media reported Thursday.

Experts from Iran, headed by Baeidinejad, and the P5+1 group, namely Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States with Germany, represented by Stephen Clement, an aide to the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, will meet to discuss details of a possible comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme, Xinhua cited Iranian nuclear negotiator Hamid Baeidinejad as saying to semi-official ISNA news agency .

Honey Singh to bring boxing league to India in October

Super rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh is on to another league, literally. After starting his Global Fighting Championship (GFC), a boxing league in Dubai, the singer has plans to bring the “mother of all boxing events” to India.

Talking about the event which started at the Dubai World Trade Centre Thursday, Honey Singh said: “Film actors, sportspersons, musicians, socialites, royalty and just personal friends…they were all here. I want this to be one of the biggest sporting events from India.”
