After targeting Union Minister Smriti Irani on her educational qualifications, Congress today questioned Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde on the same count, alleging that he “graduated in 1976 from a college established in 1978”.

Depressed businessman congratulates Modi in suicide note

Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his suicide note, a 50-year-old businessman hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his house here, police said Saturday. The cause was said to be depression over family discord.

The body of Radheyshyam Prasad was spotted by his wife at Burari area in north Delhi Saturday morning.

Police said a note which recovered from his room congratulated Modi for becoming prime minister and also accused his wife for diverting his children’s sympathy towards their maternal uncle.

TRS to invite Modi for Telangana formation day

Amid controversy over TRS not inviting the Prime Minister for the swearing-in ceremony of Telangana Chief Minister-designate K Chandrasekhar Rao on June 2, the party today said it will invite Narendra Modi for the formation day of the state likely in mid-June.

“We will be visiting Delhi to invite the Prime Minister for the formation day of Telangana, within a couple of days after the swearing-in ceremony,” TRS politburo member and MP B Vinod Kumar told PTI.

“The formation day of the new state (Telangana) is likely to be fixed in mid-June for which Modi will be invited,” he said.

Suspended IPS officer Singhal takes charge as commandant

IPS officer Girish Singhal, an accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, today took
charge as a Group Commandant in State Reserve Police here.

Singhal took charge as the Commandant of the SRP Group 12, official sources said.

The officer was reinstated by Anandi Patel-led Gujarat government on May 28. The state home department had sanctioned his proposal for reinstatement.

Gujarat’s ‘encounter cop’ Vanzara retires in jail

Suspended Gujarat cadre IPS officer D G Vanzara, who has been behind bars for the past seven years in connection with fake encounter cases, today retired after 34 years of service.

The “encounter specialist” suspended IPS officer retired in the Sabarmati Central Prison here.

As per the wish of Vanzara’s family, the police department did not organise a farewell function in the jail, a senior prison officer said.

According to Gujarat Director General of Police PC Thakur, Vanzara’s family had refused the department’s proposal to organise such a function.

Diesel prices hiked by 50 paise per litre

Diesel prices were today hiked by 50 paise a litre, excluding state levies, the second increase in rates three weeks.

The monthly hike in price came after several rounds discussions that the new Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held with state-owned oil firms on continuing with the reform initiated by the UPA government.

The announcement of the hike gave clear indications that the BJP government will continue with reforms of the previous Congress regime.

Poll defeat is collective responsibility: Ramesh

Former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh today said Rahul Gandhi did his best during the electioneering for Lok Sabha polls and the party’s drubbing was a collective responsibility.

“It’s (defeat) a collective responsibility. Rahul Gandhi tried his best,” Ramesh told reporters.

“Very good work was done in the rural sector during the last three years, but we could not make the people aware of it (during campaigning),” he said.

Strong quake strikes off Mexico: US agency

A strong 6.2-magnitude undersea earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico today, US seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred around 1153 GMT and was located about 295 kilometres southwest of the coastal resort city of Puerto Vallarta. They had earlier put the quake’s magnitude at 6.6.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake, which occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres.

Officials said there was no risk of a tsunami forming from the quake.

Insurgents determined to derail Afghan run-off: US general

Taliban insurgents will redouble their efforts to disrupt presidential elections in Afghanistan next month after failing to sabotage the first round of voting in April, a senior US general said today.

I think the enemy is going to make a push on run-off day,” said Major General Stephen Townsend, commander of
NATO-led forces in eastern Afghanistan.

The first round of voting on April 5 went ahead without major violence and with a significant turnout, despite efforts by Taliban and affiliated militants to sabotage the election,Townsend told AFP in an interview.

Indore police’s crime branch today arrested a Delhi-based man who, alongwith his associates, is suspected to have duped insurance policy-holders across the country.

Central employees may get performance based incentives

The central government may implement a performance based incentives scheme for its employees, officials said here Saturday.

According to sources, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) is slated to give a detailed presentation on Performance-Related Incentive Scheme (PRIS) to the prime minister.

The PRIS was recommended by the sixth pay commission and was accepted by the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance government.

Hockey World Cup: India go down 2-3 to Belgium

India conceded a last minute goal to lose 2-3 to Belgium in their opening match of the FIH Hockey World Cup at the Kyocera Stadium here Saturday.

Trailing 0-1, India went ahead in a space of six minutes through Mandeep Singh (44th) and Akashdeep Singh (50th).

But Belgium made it 2-2 through Simon Gougnard from a penalty corner in the 55th minute and stole the match from India in the 70th minute through a field goal from John Dohmen.

Press Council of India Chairperson Justice Markandey Katju today supported the Uniform Civil Code, a controversial core issue of BJP, claiming that one of the reasons for the backwardness of muslims has been that there has been no modernisation of their personal law.

The issue of a uniform civil code has recently been raised. I am fully in support of a uniform civil code,” Katju,

IPL spot-fixing: Court orders property attachment process against Dawood

A court here Saturday directed Delhi Police to initiate proceedings for attachment of properties against underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, his aide Chhota Shakeel and three others, who are absconding, in connection with the IPL spot-fixing case.

Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar passed the order after Delhi Police’s Special Cell informed the court that non-bailable warrants (NBWs) issued against these absconding accused, who were charge-sheeted in the case could not be executed as they no longer reside at their last known addresses in India.

Iraqi forces launch offensive in Anbar province

Iraqi security forces carried out an offensive Saturday to recapture a town held by gunmen in the volatile western province of Anbar.

An elite Iraqi military unit, backed by a brigade of armoured vehicles, stormed the militant-seized town of Saqlawiyah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, and clashed fiercely with gunmen believed to be linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL), an al-Qaida breakaway group in Iraq, Xinhua quoted a source in the provincial command operations as saying Saturday.

Indo-Canadian gangster jailed for assault

An Indian-origin gangster was sentenced to four months in jail for assaulting a fellow Indian-origin man three years ago, a media report said.

Manjit Adiwal (Mike), 35, reportedly a high profile gangster in Vancouver city in Canada, along with his associate Preetpal Sangha, 29, punched and threatened Gurpreet Sangha during a dispute at a lumber mill in Canada’s Chilliwack city in May 2011, The Vancouver Sun reported Friday.

Adiwal’s associate Preetpal Sangha was also sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to uttering death threats during the same incident.

IAF chief takes salute at NDA passing out parade

Indian Air Force chief Arup Raha Saturday reviewed and took the salute at the passing out parade of the National Defence Academy, and complimented the cadets for their “immaculate turnout and excellent drill”.
