Andhra governor, police chief, celebrities vote

Andhra Pradesh Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan, Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal and Director General of Police B. Prasada Rao were among the eminent personalities who voted here Wednesday.

The governor and his wife Vimla Narasimhan exercised their franchise at a polling centre near Raj Bhavan.

“Voting is one of the most important and almost fundamental rights provided in the parliamentary democracy. Every citizen should exercise this right,” the governor told reporters after emerging from the polling station. The state is currently under president’s rule.

Gujarat votes for Lok Sabha, assembly

Lok Sabha polls in all 26 seats of Gujarat and by-polls for seven state assembly seats began Wednesday, officials said.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is contesting from Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, while senior BJP leader L.K. Advani is fighting from Gandhinagar.

As many as 334 candidates are in the fray for the Lok Sabha polls.

Polling is being held at 45,380 polling stations where 234,011 polling personnel have been deployed.

Curiosity rover set for third drilling on Mars: NASA

US space agency NASA said Tuesday its Curiosity rover will carry out its third drilling on Mars in the coming days.

Curiosity used several tools to examine a Martian sandstone slab dubbed “Windjana” over the weekend, including a wire-bristle brush known as the Dust Removal Tool to clear away dust from a 6- centimeter-across patch on the rock, Xinhua quoted NASA as saying.

Andhra Pradesh votes for Lok Sabha, assembly

Simultaneous balloting began Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh for 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 state assembly seats in Telangana region, officials said.

The key contestants for the Lok Sabha are union Ministers S. Jaipal Reddy, Sarve Satyanarayana and Balram Naik, Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao, Lok Satta Party chief Jayaprakash Narayan and Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi.

Telangana will formally become a state June 2.

Is Congress banking on a Third Front to keep out BJP?

The Congress is increasingly coming around to the view that it is unlikely to win the 16th general election on its own and that it may have to work with a Third Front to stop the BJP from coming to power.

At least four Congress leaders have already hinted that allying with the Third Front, or a coalition of parties not allied to either the United Progressive Alliance or the National Democratic Alliance, is a possibility for the party in order to stop the BJP from coming to power.

HP developing 14-inch Android-powered laptop

HP is reportedly developing a 14- inch Android powered laptop called the SlateBook 14.

Although the company hasn’t announced the laptop officially as of yet, the SlateBook 14’s dem video appeared on HP”s website along with a video briefing the device”s key features and specs.

According to The Verge, the SlateBook 14 boosts Android”s productivity thanks to its 14-inch 1080p display and full-size keyboard.

The laptop has a built in 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage and includes Beats technology, for a powerful and bass-heavy audio experience.

Nokia developing ‘Superman’ handset with 5MP selfie camera

Nokia is reportedly developing a handset dubbed the “Superman” with 5-megapixel front-facing camera to woo selfie-takers.

According to CNET, the Superman, if it exists and launches, would match HTC”s recently launched One M8, which also comes with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera to enhance selfie shots.

Sources have revealed that the midrange handset’s features will be a lot different from that of the high-end HTC One M8.

The report added that the handset will come with a 4.7-inch screen.

iPhone sales surge but Android still dominates

Apple’s iPhone has reportedly gained some share in the smartphone market but Android still prevails the chart.

Q1 of 2014 has brought some good news for Apple iPhone as it enjoys higher sales in several countries.

According to CNET, Apple’s share in Japanese market has surpassed Android with a massive 57.6 percent share, leaving Android behind at 41.5 percent.

However, Android still enjoys a greater share globally, especially in Europe where Android stands at 70.7 percent, leaving iPhone with a mere 19.2 percent, the report added. (ANI)

Panasonic logs first annual profit in three years

Panasonic has reported its first annual profit in three years, with improved operating profit and higher sales. The maker of the Lumix camera posted profits of 120.4 billion yen for the year to March, compared with a 754 billion yen loss a year earlier. The Japanese consumer electronics giant also said cost cutting had boosted its profitability, the BBC reports. Panasonic is forecasting a 16 percent jump in net profit to 140 billion yen for the current financial year. This increase is based on the economic recovery in the US and Europe, the report added. Indian activist Ramesh Agrawal wins Goldman Environment Prize

Ramesh Agrawal has been awarded the Goldman Environment Prize.

The Indian environmental activists has won the prize for organizing villagers in the central state of Chhattisgarh and succeeding in shutting down one of the largest planned coal mines in the area, the BBC reported.

The San Francisco-based Goldman Environmental Foundation issued a statement highlighting his exemplary work and acknowledged that his work has earned him powerful enemies.

Agrawal is among six other environmental activists who have won this year’s award and each will receive 175,000 dollars. (ANI)

A new study has found that a breakfast rich in protein can provide better appetite and glucose control as compared to lower-protein breakfast.

Researchers found that when comparing common breakfasts with varying amounts of protein, a commercially prepared turkey-sausage and egg bowl, cereal and milk, and pancakes with syrup, choosing the higher-protein commercially prepared turkey-sausage and egg bowl provided increased feelings of fullness and lesser calorie intake at lunch, when compared to the lower-protein breakfasts.

Voting begins in Telangana

Voting in Andhra Pradesh began Wednesday for 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 state assembly seats in Telangana region, officials said.

This is the first time in AP history that elections are triangular or four cornered contest and Telangana will be electing its first assembly.

Balloting is taking place at 30,574 polling booths.

As many as 265 candidates are in the fray for the Lok Sabha and 1,669 for the assembly constituencies.

More than 28 million electors are eligible to exercise their franchise.

Liquor syndicate – Govt. officials worried

Governor of A.P. Mr. E.S.L. Narasimhan has issued orders for investigations against certain Govt. officials who are said to be involved in Liquor syndicate. Governor issued order to ACB to investigate the matter. He has given permission to probe against 34 corrupt officials of State Excise Dept. It is reported that the action to be taken against Govt. officials was set aside due to political pressure earlier which the Governor has revoked.
