The Aam Aadmi Party has lodged a complaint with the Returning officer of Varanasi against Narendra Modi, alleging that the BJP has spent over over Rs 1000 crore for its campaigning in the temple town and that people were “bribed”.

Man held for rape bid on daughter

Police today arrested a man who allegedly made a bid to rape his teenaged daughter.

Hanuman Singh Yadav (36), who allegedly made a bid to rape his 14-year-old daughter, a student of Class X, at Dhani Kolana village, near Khol, yesterday, was arrested and a case under the relevant provisions of the law was registered.

The accused was produced before a local court which remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.

Omar urges people of Jammu and Kashmir to come out and vote

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah sought greater participation from the people of the state in the remaining phases of the Lok Sabha polls saying he is “not accountable” to those who stayed away from the democratic exercise.

“The only people who suffer from the boycott are the voters. Because the only way you can get the accountability is by participating. When you vote you can demand accountability, when you don’t vote then who are you accountable to,” Omar told reporters at the sidelines of a function here.

FIRs against Ramdev for his remarks against Rahul

Two separate FIRs were filed today against yoga guru Ramdev, one of them by Uttar Pradesh police, for his controversial remarks that Rahul Gandhi visited Dalits’ homes for honeymoon.

“An FIR has been lodged against Baba Ramdev at Mahanagar police station under relevant section 171(g) (false statement in connection with an election) of IPC,” Additional Superintendent of Police Habibul Hassan told PTI in Lucknow.

The FIR was lodged by police after analysing the video clipping of Ramdev’s statement made yesterday.

Rupee will get stronger after NDA comes to power: Swamy

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday said rupee will appreciate to Rs 35 per dollar from over Rs 61 in the next two years if NDA comes to power.

“If NDA forms the next government and Modi becomes Prime Minister then the value of rupee will get stronger and after two years of NDA rule it will be Rs 35 per dollar,” he said.

Swamy also said that he opposes?FDI in retail as Walmart gets bank loan at a rate of two per cent for carrying out business, whereas in India businessmen get bank loans at the rate?from 12 per cent to 18 per cent.

Congress today sought to dispel the notion of propping up a Third Front government to keep Narendra Modi out of power, insisting that the UPA-III would be in place after the polls.

“We are going into the elections with an intention to win and form a government. I do not know what he has said,” Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.

He was asked at the AICC briefing whether Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s remarks that Congress could form the next government by joining hands with “the third front” was an admission of having lost the polls.

Russia urges US to assist release of protests in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Saturday urged the US to assist in the release of protest leaders arrested in southeastern Ukraine.

Lavrov, during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry, emphasised the necessity to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, “firstly to cease the military operation against protest participants and stop aggressive actions of radical nationalists of the Right Sector,” Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement published on its website.

Heat wave forces Odisha to close schools

With the mercury crossing 43 degrees Celsius in many parts of Odisha, the state government Saturday ordered the closure of all government and private schools from May 1.

“Examinations are over in all schools and morning classes are being held now. All schools will break for summer vacation from May 1. The colleges will break for summer vacation May 9,” special relief commissioner P.K. Mohapatra told reporters.

As many as 17 stations Saturday recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above.

Seven stations crossed the 43 degrees Celsius mark.

Egypt on alert after first MERS case detected

Egyptian health ministry said Saturday that it discovered the first case of the SARS-like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus in an Egyptian man back from Saudi Arabia.

The 27-year-old patient took a medical examination Friday in a Cairo hospital, Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement. It added that the man was in a stable condition now.

Saudi Arabia has been severely hit by the MERS virus, as over 300 such cases have been reported and 92 people died since April, 2012.

Motorsports: MEL second round cancelled

The second round of the Motorcycle Endurance League, comprising eight franchise teams, that was scheduled to run this weekend here at the Kari Motor Speedway was cancelled due to the track condition that was rendered “unsafe” when the re-laid surface melted in the summer heat.

The decision was taken late Saturday evening by the stewards who on inspection and after receiving feedback from some of the experienced riders who were allowed a 20-minute practice session, declared the track unsuitable for racing.

John Trovolta approached for Shekhar Kapoor’s “Paani”

Amrican actor John Trovolta, who attended the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) 2014 here Friday, said he has been approached by filmaker Shekhar Kapoor for “Paani”.

“Yes, I have been offered a film that I am considering doing. I believe it’s an honest Bollywood film and its called “Pani”. Shekhar Kapoor has asked me to be a part of it,” Trovolta said.

Shekhar Kapur has been planning to make “Paani” for a while now and Hrithik Roshan was earlier approached for this film.

Actor Tom Hiddleston, who replaced Benedict Cumberbatch in in the upcoming horror movie “Crimson Peak”, says that the two share a cordial bond.

Cumberbatch was dropped out of the Guillermo Del Toro-directed movie, slated to release in 2015. Hiddleston said that his friend Cumberbatch didn’t mind, reports showbizspy.com.

“He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that. It’s a great script and I’ve been a fan of Guillermo del Toro forever. I think he’s amazing,” said Hiddleston.

Hindi films are very original, full of life: John Trovolta

Amrican actor John Trovolta Friday said he is a big fan of Hindi films and feels they are “very originl and full of life”.

“I liked ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which wasn’t a bollywood film but somewhat reflects India. I recently saw ‘Ram Leela’… I find Hindi films very original and full of life, they capture your attention and have universal themes, so yes I am a big fan of Hindi films,” Travolta said at the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) 2014 here.

He said that Bollywood’s influence was felt more widely and that musicals in Hollywood were rare.

Woman from Bengal found murdered in Gurgaon

A 35-year-old woman from West Bengal was Saturday found murdered in her rented accomodation here, police said. Her husband, who is absconding, is suspected to be behind the crime.

The woman was identified as Mansi Mahti, from South 24 Parganas district. She was living in Tigra village in Gurgaon with her husband Paritosh Mahti.

The woman worked as a domestic help and was strangulated to death, a police official said.

The couple were last seen together having dinner Thursday evening by a neighbour. The meal served in one plate was untouched while the second plate was empty, he said.

Kings XI beat Knight Riders, remain unbeaten in IPL

The Kings XI Punjab won their fourth consecutive match to remain unbeaten in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when they defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by 23 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here Saturday.

Chasing a modest total of 133, the Kolkata outfit were bowled out for 109 in 18.2 overs by Kings XI, who still lead the standings with 8 points from four matches.

22 killed in attacks in Iraq

At least 22 people were killed and 35 others wounded in attacks across Iraq Saturday, police and medical sources said.

A civilian was killed and 10 others wounded in a roadside bomb attack at a popular restaurant in al-Naser district, east of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Xinhua quoted a police source as saying.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a police patrol in Saidiyah district in the southern part of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding five others, the source said.

Congress and BJP were playing a “got up match” because neither of the two parties wanted a third face to come to power, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said today, while claiming that her party would play a vital role in government formation post polls.
