24 killed in Syria blasts

At least 24 people were killed and many injured Sunday when rebels’ shelling targeted government-controlled districts in Syria.

At least 15 shells slammed into Bab al-Faraj, Baroun Street, following the rebels’ blast that ripped through the industrial chamber and the adjacent electricity station in Saba Bahrat area of Aleppo, xinhua reported.

The Syrian army recaptured the al-Matahen area, besieged the al-Ramoseh area and advanced into the al-Ameriyeh area in Aleppo Sunday.

Former MLA C Bapineedu passes away

Former MLA from Tanuku in West Godavari district, Chittori Bapineedu (78) breathed his last due to heart attack this morning. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2004 as a Congress candidate and worked for development of the constituency. His body was kept at his residence today to enable people to pay their last respects. His last rites would be performed on Monday, according to his family members.(NSS)

Jayalalithaa condoles Maj. Varadharajan’s death in Kashmir

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Sunday condoled the death of Maj. Mukund Varadharajan while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir April 25.

In a statement here, Jayalalithaa said she was grieved on hearing about Varadharajan’s death.

The 32-year-old Varadharajan of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles was killed along with a soldier in a gun battle with separatist guerrillas in Karewa Manloo village in Kashmir’s Shopian district. Three guerrillas were also killed.

The chief minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs.1 million to the army officer’s family.

CPI leader and former MLA K Subba Raju today alleged that major political parties are trying to lure the electors with their false manifestos which are largely aimed at influencing the electors in the elections. The manifestos being projected at top level cannot be implemented, he said.

Babu promises nine hrs power supply to farm sector

If the TDP is voted to power, nine hours uninterrupted power supply would be provided to agriculture sector, said TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu today.
He was addressing an election meeting at Bodhan in Nizamabad district. During TDP regime, they generated surplus power. But Congress failed to sustain it and its leaders were busy in looting the country, he alleged. Naidu said that first, the TDP had announced that loans of farmers would be waived off after TDP coming to power and now the Congress party also announced same thing copying TDP agenda, he alleged. Two persons including a woman were found murdered at Mallepally

Two persons including a woman were found murdered at a house in Mallepally sitarambagh road under Habeebnagar police station limits on Sunday.
According to Habeebnagar police, The victim, Kumar (25) a daily wager was staying at the house for the last one year.
The murder came to light after locals complained to the police about foul smell emanating from the house of the victim. “Miscreants might have killed them by throwing boulders on their head about four days ago,” Habeebnagar Inspector, R. Sanjay Kumar said.

Harish Rao threatens defamation suit against Pawan Kalyan

TRS senior leader T Harish Rao on Sunday threatened to file a defamation suit against cine star and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan.

Pawan Kalyan had earlier alleged that Harish Rao was having business relationship with former PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana in his cable network business. However, Harish Rao made it clear that he never had any business transactions with Botsa and was in no way related to his business activities. He asked Pawan Kalyan to prove the allegations within 24 hours or face a defamation suit.

Congress will form government in both states: Jairam

Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Sunday claimed that the Congress party would form the next government in both Telangana and residuary State of Andhra Pradesh.

Re-polling ends peacefully in Bihar

Re-polling at 30 polling stations in Bihar ended peacefully Sunday with a voter turnout of 55 percent, an official said.

State’s Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshman said the re-polling started at 7 a.m. and ended peacefully at 6 p.m.

He said re-polling at 22 polling stations was held in Katihar parliamentary constituency from where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary and Minister of State for Agriculture Tariq Anwar is pitted against the BJP’s Nikhil Kumar Choudhary.

Pakistan-TTP should focus on talks not ceasefire

A member from the Taliban negotiating committee said Sunday that the Pakistan government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) should focus on the peace talks rather than on a ceasefire.

Maulana Samiul Haq, chief Taliban mediator, said that those talking about military action were “enemies of Pakistan” and war benefited no one, Dawn online reported.

Haq also accused the media of advocating war.

Trinamool MP’s ‘development for votes’ speech under scanner

The Election Commission Sunday said it had sought a report from the Birbhum district magistrate on Trinamool Congress MP and Bengali actress Satabdi Roy’s address at a rally, where she said that priority for development will be given to those areas from which she corners the maximum number of votes.

Officer on special duty in the CEO’s office Amit Ray Chaudhury said the district magistrate has been asked to submit the recordings of the address and a detailed report.

New CJI favours wider dialogue to select judges

New Chief Justice of India Rajendra Mal Lodha Sunday said in the appointment of judges he favoured much wider consultations involving judges outside the collegium and senior members of the bar of the respective high courts.

Speaking to the media after taking oath, the CJI said he was writing to chief justices of high courts to involve three more senior most judges outside the collegium and three senior most lawyers of impeccable integrity in the process.

Sunrisers batsmen Warner, Finch reprimanded

Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen David Warner and Aaron Finch were Sunday reprimanded for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Delhi Daredevils at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium here Friday.

Both the Australians received the reprimand for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

African national’s body found in plastic bag in Delhi

An unidentified, decomposed body of a foreign national was recovered outside a shop here, police said Sunday.

The body most likely of a national from a African country, and aged around 35 years, was stuffed in a plastic sack. It was spotted by passersby in the Nizamuddin area of south Delhi Sunday morning.

Police said the body was taken to a hospital and a case of murder has been registered.
