No Modi wave but ‘anger’ wave: AAP

There is no “Modi wave” in the country, only a “gussa (anger) ka wave”, says the Aam Aadmi Party.

AAP national spokesman Sanjay Singh said this here while describing the Bharatiya Janata Party as the AAP’s main political foe in the Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh.

“Our main fight in UP is with the BJP,” he said. “There is no Modi wave in the country. It is a ‘gussa ka wave’ (against the Congress).”

Pak envoy Abdul Basit presents credentials to President

Pakistani High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit was among four envoys who presented their credentials to President Pranab Mukherjee here today.

According to a Pakistani High Commission release, after the ceremony, Basit conveyed his warm wishes to the President from Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and hoped that the new government will engage fruitfully with Islamabad.

The High Commissioner said that Sharif was resolved to changing the bilateral narrative of conflict into a one underpinned by cooperation, mutual interest and mutual trust.

India to help install floodlights at Sabina Park

Jamaica and India are to sign an agreement to have flood lights installed at Sabina Park.

The news comes after months of discussions between several government ministries and entities and officials from the Indian High Commission, CMC quoted a report from The Jamaica Observer.

Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) president Wilford Heaven declined to reveal details but has said an announcement will be made Tuesday.

Indian High Commissioner Pratap Singh and Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller are expected to be there at the time of the announcement at Sabina Park here.

BJP’s Varun praises estranged cousin Rahul, clarifies later

In rare remarks, BJP’s Varun Gandhi praised estranged cousin Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leader quickly lapped up the praise leaving the BJP embarrassed after which he changed tack and said it should not be seen as an endorsement of any political party or candidate.

US urged to ban land mines

The Obama administration should conclude its years-long review of US policy on anti-personnel land mines with a decision to ban the weapon and join the international ban treaty, Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.

“It is nonsensical that the US has spent billions of dollars to clean up the mess caused by land mines but insists on the right to use them again in the future,” said Steve Goose, arms director at Human Rights Watch.

“Throwing money at the problem is not enough. A permanent solution is needed and the Mine Ban Treaty provides it.”

‘Modi wave cosmetic creation of BJP’

Veteran Congress leader S.M. Krishna Wednesday dubbed the “(Narendra) Modi wave” in Karnataka a cosmetic creation of a desperate BJP.

“There is no sign of Modi or BJP wave anywhere in the country, state and city unlike in the past when there were two natural waves in favour of our leaders Indira Gandhi in 1971 and Rajiv Gandhi in 1984.

Sensex ends above 22,500-level

The BSE benchmark Sensex today surpassed the 22,500-level to set a new closing high for the sixth day in succession on the back of persistent foreign capital inflows and positive global cues.

The barometer opened the day on a stronger note and spurted further to its all-time record of 22,592.10 intra-day, with realty, refinery, healthcare, capital goods, power and consumer durable counters attracting buying.

BJP explores alliance option with TRS

Following no headway in talks with the Telugu Desam Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party is exploring the options of having an alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

According to sources, BJP senior leader Ch Vidyasagar Rao is in touch with TRS Chief K Chandrasekhar Rao over the issue of possible alliance. Although BJP National Spokesperson Prakash Javedkar denied reports of talks with the TRS, he praised the latter and claimed that the TRS would definitely win in Telangana. These remarks triggered further speculation that the BJP was inching closer to the TRS.

Ponnala accuses KCR of making false promises

Telangana Congress president Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Wednesday ridiculed the election promises of TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan here, Ponnala accused the TRS chief of trying to mislead the people by building castles in the air. He said that some of the promises being made by KCR like providing aero-healthcare in agency areas was like chasing a mirage. Six policemen killed in Afghanistan suicide attack

At least six policemen were killed Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack at the country’s interior ministry office, the ministry confirmed in a statement.

“One suicide bomber wearing military uniform tried to enter alongside visitors to the ministry of interior building at around 2.30 p.m. (local time),” Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in the statement.

“The attacker detonated his explosive jacket at the entrance after being identified. Six Afghan National Police (ANP) were martyred as a result of the blast,” it added.

The suicide bomber was also killed on the spot.

Sikh outfit appeals EC to stop “misuse” of religious places

Expressing concern over “misuse” of religious places by political parties for electoral gains, a Sikh outfit in Jammu and Kashmir today appealed Election Commission of India to direct the state election authorities not to allow “exploitation of people” by invoking religion.

“We have written a letter to Chief Election Commissioner asking him to direct the state election authorities to stop the political parties from addressing people who assemble at religious places purely for religious purposes.

Kerala is India’s ‘best green destination’

Kerala has bagged the “Best Green Destination” prize at India’s Best Awards for 2013, officials said Wednesday.

Kerala also picked up the “Best Indian State” prize at the awards presented by the Travel + Leisure South Asia magazine for the world’s top tourism and travel destinations and services.

The awards were presented by Portugal’s ambassador to India Jorge Roza de Oliveira in New Delhi Monday.

Japan is planning to ease the ban on arms export, which they themselves implemented about 50 years ago. According to BBC, with the ease in ban, Japan can now develop arms and ammunitions with other partners and other markets can also get access to the market and technology. After World War II, Japan adopted a policy, which allowed participation in war only for self defence. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants to reinforce national security and lift other self-imposed bans. Japan is keen on transparency in exports and stop third parties to use the export facility.

Soon, floating electric car to help in disasters

Forget military helicopters or life boats when a natural calamity strikes. A Japanese firm is on the job to build an all-electric, floating car that can reach low-lying, flood-prone regions in a jiffy.

Named ‘Concept One’, the vehicle from Japanese company Fromm would have a water jet generator to propel it through water-covered roads.

“The idea to build such a vehicle came after the company’s president Hideo Tsurumaki saw the tsunami devastation that hit Japan in 2011,” said a report in Grist.
