Man sentenced to life for raping and murdering minor girl

A court here today awarded life imprisonment to a man for raping and murdering a minor girl.

Rewari District and Sessions judge Jagdeep Jain sentenced Pradeep to imprisonment for life. The court on April 21 held him guilty of raping and then strangling to death a 5-year-old girl of Thathetra Colony here on February 4.

The verdict has been pronounced by the sessions court in a time of less than three months.

The judge also sentenced Pradeep’s brother Kuldeep and Kuldeep’s associate Manish to imprisonment for four months, holding them guilty of concealing the truth from police.

BJP releases pix of hawala accused with Md Azharuddin

Hours after Congress released a CD purportedly showing Narendra Modi in pictures with hawala accused Afroz Fatta, BJP hit back by coming out with pictures showing the same man with Congress MP Md Azharuddin.

BJP legislator Harsh R Sanghavi brought out a picture showing Fatta with cricketer-turned-politician Azharuddin and questioned Congress on it.

Goa begins probe into mass death of clams

The Goa government Monday launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a large number of clams, a well-known seafood delicacy, in a river near the capital.

The investigation was launched after reports in media about the strange phenomenon of deaths of clams in Velim village, around 50 km south of here.

The state’s fish-loving population is already reeling under high prices on account of severe shortage in fish catch over the last few months.

Two arrested for murdering 5-year-old in Delhi

Two men have been arrested for the kidnapping and murder of a five-year-old boy whose body was found April 25, police said Monday. One of the accused is the child’s uncle.

Amit Gupta, the child’s 30-year-old paternal uncle, and his 28-year-old partner Rehman abducted the child, Vasu, from outside his house in east Delhi’s Brahmpuri area on the evening of April 24.

The boy before leaving home had reportedly informed his mother that he was going to meet Gupta to collect a gift.

Voting time in Srinagar reduced by an hour

Voting time in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency has been reduced by an hour, an election commission official said here Monday.

Voting will now start at 7 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. as was the schedule in Anantnag, Udhampur and Jammu where balloting has already taken place.

“Voting time has been reduced by one hour for Srinagar Lok Sabha seat where polls are scheduled to be held Wednesday,” a poll official told IANS here.

Himachal court says no to Ramdev holding yoga camps

The Himachal Pradesh High Court Monday rejected a plea of yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s Swabhiman Trust to permit it to hold “yog shivirs” (yoga camps) in Kangra and Chamba towns.

A division bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice D.C. Chaudhary said the orders passed by the Karnataka High Court and the Gujarat High Court were of no help to the petitioner as these were passed prior to registration of a first information report (FIR) against Ramdev.

Final hearing on two Delhi gang rape convicts’ appeals in July: SC

The Supreme Court Monday extended its March 15 interim order staying execution of the death sentence of Mukesh and Pawan Gupta – two of the four convicts in Dec 16, 2012, Delhi gang rape case – and directed the matter be listed in July’s second week for final hearing.

A bench of Justice B.S.Chauhan and Justice J. Chelameswar asked the Delhi government to place before it all the records in the case including that of the trial court along with their English translation.

Gold ends flat, silver remains weak on subdued demand

Gold prices ended steady on the domestic bullion market today due to muted demand from jewellery stockists and traders at prevailing levels despite firm overseas sentiment.

However, silver remained under selling pressure from speculators as well as reduced offtake from industrial users.

Silver (.999 fineness) dropped by Rs 180 to conclude at Rs 43,625 per kg from last Saturday’s closing level of Rs 43,805.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) and pure gold (99.9 purity) both closed at their weekend level of Rs 30,155 and Rs 30,305 per 10 grams, respectively.

Invoking Vajpayee, Modi asks Lucknow voters to support Rajnath
