Akhilesh holds roadshow in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today held a massive roadshow in support of party candidate from Lucknow Abhishek Mishra.

The roadshow, which started from GPO Park in Hazratganj, was attended by a large number of party workers and youths. It ended at Lohia Park at Chowk where senior cabinet minister Shivpal Singh Yadav was also present.

During the roadshow which covered a distance of 12 kms, people showered flower petals on Akhilesh, who in turn greeted them.

My secular credentials beyond doubt: Azam Khan

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan today repudiated charges that his speeches at a number of rallies, after which he was barred from campaigning across Uttar Pradesh by the Election Commission, had communal overtones and asserted that his secular credentials were “beyond doubt”.

“My secular credentials are beyond doubt. And by secular credentials I imply my respect and concern for the rights and sentiments of all religions. I was the minister in-charge of the Maha Kumbh congregation held here last year and also the Ardh Kumbh of 2007.

BJP workers manhandled me in Rae Bareli: Shabnam Hashmi

Social activist Shabnam Hashmi claimed that she and her associate were “manhandled” by a group of BJP workers Monday in Rae Bareli while they were distributing leaflets that aim to explode “the myth surrounding the Gujarat development model”.

“A group of about 25-30 BJP workers wearing saffron caps surrounded us and snatched away the leaflets. They also threatened and manhandled us,” Hashmi alleged.

“Their language was highly abusive and sexist. The incident took place in afternoon,” Hashmi told PTI over phone.

Jordan jails 10 jihadists for trying to join Syrian rebels

Jordan’s military-run State Security Court Monday decided to imprison 10 “jihadists” for two years -and-a -half each after they tried to enter Syria and join radical groups, the state media reported.

“The convicts were charged with seeking to do forbidden acts,” Xinhua quoted the court as saying in a statement, which added that the convicts wanted to join Syrian Islamist militia groups like al-Nusra Front and Daash.

They were arrested at the borders as they were trying to enter Syrian territory, the report said.

Congress reaching consensus on re-opening 418 Kerala bars?

With Congress’ Kerala unit president V.M.Sudheeran seemingly softening his stand against renewing the annual license to 418 bars, it appears that a consensus on this issue is likely to emerge when the issue will come for discussion at the meeting of the party-led United Democratic Front Tuesday.

Sudheeran Monday toned down his stand, saying he is open to more views coming up and talks on the matter as the UDF is meeting Tuesday.

20-year jail for man for raping woman, attempting murder

A court here has sent a man to 20 years in jail for raping a woman and trying to kill her.

The court said the man committed two most serious offences and showed the “highest degree of depravation, brutality and barbarism”.

Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat held 20-year-old Suraj Kumar guilty of attempt to murder and rape, and awarded him 10 years jail term for each.

The court ordered that the “sentences shall run one after another”. The order was delivered Saturday and was released Monday.

Kumar was also slapped with a fine of Rs.50,000.

Congress, BJP spar over Modi’s ‘links’ with alleged hawala kingpin

The Congress Monday attacked Narendra Modi on his alleged links with a “hawala kingpin” whose house and office in Gujarat were searched by the Enforcement Directorate but the BJP dismissed the allegations as showing “bankruptcy of the Congress”. A BJP leader posted a photograph of Congress MP Mohammad Azharuddin with the same man but removed it soon.

The Congress attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate came a day after BJP released a video of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra’s land deals and alleged “corruption under patronage.”

Chandy seeks PM’s intervention to save FACT

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Monday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking his intervention to save FACT, the largest central public sector in the state as it is reeling under severe financial crisis.

In his letter, Chandy asked Manmohan Singh to intervene to clear the comprehensive financial relief package worth Rs.991 crores that has already been approved by the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) and is pending before the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

Infosys independent director Ann Fudge will not seek re-appointment after completing her term June 14 owning to her busy schedule.

“Fudge has conveyed her intention not to seek re-appointment after completing her term on the board June 14 owning to her busy schedule,” the IT bellwether said in a statement Monday.

The company’s board has seven independent directors and six executive directors.

SC suspends death sentence of Red Fort attack convict

The Supreme Court Monday stayed the execution of December 2000 Red Fort terror shootout convict Mohamed Arif’s death sentence on a plea that he has already undergone life sentence of nearly 14 years and could not be punished twice and referred the matter to a constitution bench.

Counsel Tripurari Ray, appearing for Arif, said that carrying out the death sentence of Arif after he has already completed 13 years, four month imprisonment would be violative of article 20 (1) of the constitution.

Gurgaon man held for raping woman

A 25-year-old man was Monday arrested here for raping a 22-year-old woman from Uttarakhand, police said.

The accused Monu was known to the woman living here in Sikanderpur area in a rented accommodation.

The woman told police she was raped by Monu in October last year.

The accused lives in the same neighbourhood.

The woman and the accused both work at mobile phone outlets but knew each other.

After medical examination of the woman, the accused was arrested on rape charges, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Rao Dalbir Singh.

Girls outperform boys in Inter First Year exams

Girls have outperformed boys in the First Year Intermediate Public Examination 2014 whose results were announced here on Monday. While 60.52 per cent girls passed the exam, 51.37 per cent boys cleared the Inter First Year.

The girls maintained their dominance in the Vocational with a pass percentage of 50.03 per cent compared to boys’ 38.69.

Laborer died after friend hit on his head

A-30-year old Laborer died after one of his friend hit on his head with a stick in Ibrahimpatnam police limits.

According to police, deceased Krishna Naik (30) a laborer in poultry feeds company in sheriguda of Ibrahimpatnam S/o Bavuri Naik R/o Ibrahimpatnam N/o Orissa. The victim consumed liquor along with his friend Mahaveer at his workplace in Ibrahimpatnam on Sunday night. Later both of them entered into an argument after which Mahaveer allegedly hit him on his head with a piece of firewood. He was rushed to Osmania General Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

50 year-old Sweeper died after falling from height

A-50 year-old Sweeper died of injuries which he suffered after falling from height while sleeping at his house on April 24.

According to Jubilee Hills police, the deceased, K Rajkumar (50) a Sweeper S/o Yadagiri R/o Ashayya nagar of Yousufguda deceased accidentally fallen on his house while he was sleeping on April 24, due to which he received multiple injuries immediately rushed to OGH where undergoing treatment he died on Sunday night hours.

Elaborate security arranged for polling in city

The Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma on Monday said that elaborate security arrangements were made in the City to ensure free and fair polling on April 30.
Speaking to the media here, Anurag Sharma informed that 20,000 policemen were deployed in the City for the purpose of elections. In addition, 37 companies of central forces would also be utilized for the purpose.
