Researchers have now found that the unhealthy food that they are often treated to after the games may make them fatter.

Because of the unhealthy snacks and sugar sweetened drinks that they are served after the training or a match, the children may actually end up consuming more calories that they burn while exercising, the researchers said.

Karnataka accepts Kasturirangan report to stop mining, but not quarrying, sand mining

Karnataka on Sunday said it has accepted the Kasturirangan committee report on the Western Ghats to stop mining but said it would not stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically sensitive area.

“We have accepted the recommendation to stop mining in Western Ghats but disagreed to stop quarrying and sand mining in the ecologically-sensitive Western Ghats,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandhra told reporters here.

Smartphone sensors leave trackable fingerprints

Researchers have found that fingerprints exist within smartphone sensors.

Research by Associate Professor Romit Roy Choudhury and graduate students Sanorita Dey and Nirupam Roy has demonstrated that these fingerprints exist within smartphone sensors, Sanorita Dey, Associate Professor Romit Roy Chourdhury, and Nirupam Roy .

Other collaborators on this project are Professors Srihari Nelakuditi and Wenyuan Xu at the University of South Carolina (USC).

Tomb of royal children identified near Egyptian Valley of the Kings

Excavations by Egyptologists from the University of Basel, close to the royal tombs in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings, have led to the identification of the burial place of several children as well as other family members of two pharaohs.

Basel Egyptologists of the University of Basel Kings’ Valley Project have been working on tomb KV 40 in the Valley of the Kings close to the city of Luxor for three years.

Survey reveals way to woman’s heart is through smooth facial skin

Forget the stubbled and bearded look if you wish to make your way into a woman’s heart, according to a new survey.

The Philips Shaving Survey reveals that 91 percent of the women respondents shared that they dislike men with hard facial skin and get turned on by smooth facial skin.

Conducted by Nielsen March 14 covering 533 males and 502 females in the age group 25 to 30 years in four cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune – the survey also indicates that the health of a man’s skin also impacts how women react to him.

Warm day ahead in Delhi

It was a pleasant Tuesday morning here with the minimum temperature recorded two notches below the season’s average at 22.6 degrees Celsius. The Met Office has forecast a warm day.

“The sky will be clear with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 35 percent.

Monday’s maximum temperature was recorded a notch below the season’s average at 39.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was three notches below the season’s average at 21 degrees Celsius.

Sensex recovers over 45 points in early trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex recovered over 45 points in early trade today on emergence of buying by funds and retail investors in select stocks on encouraging earnings amid a firming trend overseas.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost almost 245 points in the previous two sessions, rose 45.03 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 22,676.64 on the back of recovery in healthcare, tech, consumer durables and oil & gas sector stocks.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty, gained 13.40 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 6,774.65.

Girls called ‘too fat’ likelier to become obese: Study

Researchers have found that girls who are told by a parent, sibling, friend, classmate or teacher that they are too fat at age 10 are more likely to be obese at age 19.

The study looked at 1,213 African-American girls and 1,166 white girls living in Northern California, Cincinnati and Washington, D.C., 58 percent of whom had been told they were too fat at age 10. All the girls had their height and weight measured at the beginning of the study and again after nine years.

Gold price opens lower in Hong Kong

The gold price in Hong Kong went down 46 HK dollars to open at 12,020 HK dollars per tael Tuesday, according to the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society.

The price is equivalent to $1,301.91 a troy ounce, down $4.98 at the latest exchange rate of $1 against 7.75 HK dollars.IANS

China’s yuan strengthens

The Chinese yuan strengthened 9 basis points to 6.1556 against the US dollar Tuesday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.

In China’s foreign exchange spot market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day, reported Xinhua.

The central parity rate of the yuan against the US dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.

UNSC strengthens support for security sector reform

The UN Security Council (UNSC) Monday adopted a resolution to strengthen its support for the security sector reform in countries emerging from conflict, and assist them to prioritise the development of the sector.

The 15-member body unanimously adopted the first-ever stand- alone resolution on security sector reform after a day-long debate chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, which holds the Council’s April presidency, Xinhua reported.

US court dismisses 1984 riots case against Congress

A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against India’s Congress party relating to the November 1984 anti-Sikh violence, saying it did not sufficiently “touch and concern” the US court to exercise jurisdiction.

However, even as he dismissed the case filed by the US based rights group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), Judge Robert W. Sweet of US District Court here ruled that corporate entities like the Congress party of India can be sued under Alien Torts Statute (ATS).

Fire breaks out in PMO

A fire broke out Tuesday morning in a room of the Prime Minister’s Office here. There was no damage or injury reported, an official said.

“There was a short circuit in a computer UPS in the PMO’s room in South Block, which triggered off a smoke detector. The fire alarm went off and fire service reached the spot,” said an official in the PMO.

Turkish protesters break into Egyptian consulate in Istanbul

Some Turkish demonstrators broke into the Egyptian consulate in Istanbul Monday night when hundreds of them were protesting against an Egyptian court’s earlier decision to sentence some 683 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death.

Over 1,000 demonstrators staged protests in the front of the consulate. Five of them climbed on the wall of the building and two jumped into the consulate yard. They were detained by security guards, Xinhua quoted a witness as saying.

Ukraine to get one bn euro loan from EU

The European Commission agreed Monday to supply a new tranch of 1-billion-euro (about $1.38 billion) loan to Ukraine, to help the country reduce short-term balance of payments and fiscal vulnerabilities.

The new Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) is part of the package to support Ukraine and was approved by the EU Council of Ministers April 14, Xinhua reported.

The disbursement of the assistance will be conditional on specific economic policy conditions which focus on public finance management and anti-corruption.
