Fire breaks out at AP secretariat

Fire broke at C block of Andhra Pradesh Secretariat. Saifabad police told that the fire accident occurred at 7:45 pm on Monday and security guards of Special Protection Force present there informed fire extinguishing team. Fire fighting team doused the fire.

Some files are said to be damaged due to fire. While secretary Mr. N Shiv Shankar clarified that no file has been damaged. Investigations are underway.

‘Extreme wet, dry spells up drought, flood risks in India’

In an alarming research, a team of scientists at Stanford University have identified significant changes in the patterns of extreme wet and dry events that are increasing the risk of drought and flood in central India.

The team, which includes two Indian-origin researchers, reveal that the intensity of extremely wet spells and the number of extremely dry spells during the south Asian monsoon season have both been increasing in recent decades.

Giriraj Singh’s arrest put on hold till May 3

A Jharkhand court Tuesday suspended the order for the arrest of Bihar BJP leader Giriraj Singh till May 3 for his hate speech during campaigning.

A Deoghar district court issued the order after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader filed a petition for his anticipatory bail.

Two first information reports were lodged against Giriraj Singh – one in Bokaro district and the second in Deoghar district of the state – on the instructions of the Election Commission.

He is the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Nawada constituency in Bihar.

North Korea starts live-fire drill

North Korea set off its live-fire drill Tuesday near the disputed inter-Korean border islands, about a month after conducting the same drill.

Military officials said that Pyongyang started the pre-noticed live-fire drills around 2 p.m., Xinhua reported.

North Korea was known to have fired self-propelled artillery shells from coastal battery positions toward waters just north of the western inter-Koran sea border.

Rajeev Suri to head Nokia

Finnish telecommunications equipment maker Nokia today appointed India-born Rajeev Suri as its President and CEO.

Earlier, the 46-year old was leading Nokia Solutions and Networks, the smaller network equipment unit of Nokia before the company sold its handset business to software giant Microsoft in a USD 7.2 billion deal.

He replaces Stephen Elop, who has returned to Microsoft as the executive vice president of its devices group.

Sikh, Muslim group to file complaint against amusement parks

Sikh and Muslim rights group in California will file multiple complaints against an amusement parks chain that denied access to people from the two communities to certain rides, saying the religious head coverings worn by them posed safety hazards.

The California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA) and United Sikhs will announce the filing of multiple public accommodation complaints with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) against Boomers amusement parks.

Amid tension over EC curbs, Punjab votes Wednesday

Over 1.95 crore voters in Punjab are eligible to cast ballot Wednesday for the 13 Lok Sabha seats amid political tension after the poll panel banned Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia from moving anywhere in Amritsar city other than his own polling station.

The Election Commission (EC) is expecting up to 80 percent voting Wednesday. Punjab recorded 70 percent polling in the 2009 general elections, said Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer V.K. Singh.

There are 253 candidates in the fray for all the 13 seats this time.

According to police, the accused Gopinath from Khammam district, accepted friend’s request from women who thought the account was of the artist Sagar from ‘Mogali Rekulu’, Telugu serial.

Obesity related to metabolic diseases: Study

Abdominal obesity in children is directly related to metabolic diseases in them, including high blood pressure and diabetes, a new study has shown.

The study was done on 10,842 children in five cities of India namely Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Raipur. It suggests cut-off values of waist circumference for screening for Metabolic Syndrome (MS) in Indian children.

It has also developed age and sex specific reference curves for waist circumference for Indian children. This study has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Paediatrics.

According to a study, girls who are told that they are too fat at age 10 are more likely to be obese at age 19.

“Simply being labeled as too fat has a measurable effect almost a decade later. We nearly fell off our chairs when we discovered this,” said A. Janet Tomiyama, an assistant professor of psychology at University of California, Los Angeles.

SC reserves order on spot-fixing probe panel

The Supreme Court Tuesday reserved its order on setting up a panel to probe allegation of spot-fixing and betting against some of the cricketers playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) and BCCI president N. Srinivasan.

The apex court bench headed by Justice A.K. Patnaik reserved the order after it was told here that Justice Mukul Mudgal has consented to head the panel to investigate the allegations against the cricketers and Srinivasan.

Attacking Narendra Modi, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Laloo Prasad Yadav today said that “even a butcher is shy” of the BJP leader who was aiming to become the Prime Minister of the country.

Minor fire at PM’s Office

A minor fire was reported at the Prime Minister’s Office located in South Block in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Top officials of the city administration, Delhi Police and the Fire Brigade Department were rushed to the PMO to take stock of the situation.

“It was a small fire in a room on the ground floor of the PMO. We received the call at about 6:25 am. Six to seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot. It was brought under control within minutes,” AK Sharma, director, Delhi Fire Service, told a news agency.
