Top UP official attempting to influence polls, claims Shahnawaz Hussain

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shahnawaz Hussain on Tuesday alleged that a top official of the Uttar Pradesh Government is trying to influence the ongoing parliamentary polls in the state by ‘threatening’ officers on the election duty.

Urging the Election Commission to take cognisance of it, Hussain said the party is willing to disclose the name of the official.

10,000 staff to spend night inside polling stations in Srinagar

More than 10,000 poll staff deployed at 1,546 polling stations in Srinagar Lok Sabha seat reached their places of duty and will spend the night there ahead of polling Wednesday while over 50 paramilitary troopers and local policemen each began securing the sites.

Due to security reasons, all the polling staff at polling stations set up at 968 places would spend the night there.

A total of 241 companies of central paramilitary forces and over 10,000 local policemen have been deployed for polling duties in Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.

HC rejects Abu Jundal’s plea to appear in courts

The Bombay High Court today rejected the plea of Sayyed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, prime accused in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case, to quash a Maharashtra Government Resolution (GR) which prohibited him from appearing in the courts as he had threat to his life.

Jundal’s lawyer Ejaz Naqvi prayed that his client had a right under the Constitution to appear before the courts in cases filed against him because he had to defend himself.

More people died due to terrorism during BJP regime: Rahul

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Tuesday attacked the BJP, saying more people died due to terrorism during the NDA regime than during the Congress tenure.

“We have statistics to prove we produced more electricity and curbed terrorism (than the BJP),” Gandhi said at an election rally here.

“During the five years of BJP rule, 22,000 people lost their lives. During the Kandahar (Afghanistan) hijacking (of 1999), top BJP leaders stood in a line and gave the terrorists whatever they wanted,” he said, adding it was this incident which led to the attack on parliament.

Delhi teacher arrested for molesting five students

A 35-year-old school teacher was Tuesday arrested here for molesting five girl students in the school premises, police said.

Music teacher Vijay Kumar was arrested following a violent protest by guardians of the students, aged between 13 and 15 years, outside the government school in Mahendra Park area of west Delhi.

Police said family members of the students gathered outside the school and demanded action against the teacher. The angry relatives also pelted stones at the school building.

Nokia developing ‘Superman’ handset with 5MP selfie camera

Nokia is reportedly developing a handset dubbed the “Superman” with 5-megapixel front-facing camera to woo selfie-takers.

According to CNET, the Superman, if it exists and launches, would match HTC’s recently launched One M8, which also comes with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera to enhance selfie shots.

Sources have revealed that the midrange handset’s features will be a lot different from that of the high-end HTC One M8.

The report added that the handset will come with a 4.7-inch screen.

Nokia was recently acquired by software giant Microsoft for 7.5 billion dollars. (ANI)

RIL asks government to implement new gas price on May 13

The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has asked the petroleum ministry to implement the cabinet-approved new natural gas price on May 13, when the election code of conduct will no longer apply after the end of the nine-phased voting in the ongoing Lok Sabha poll.

A senior ministry source told IANS that RIL had written on April 3 that announcing the new rate immediately after the polling code ends on May 12 was “necessary to avoid extended dispute and irreparable loss to all parties to the Production Sharing Contract (PSC)”.

Bharti Airtel’s Q4 net up by 89 percent

Bharti Airtel posted 89 percent jump in net profit in the fourth quarter (January-March) on voice and data business growth, a company statement said here Tuesday.

The net profit for the fourth quarter stood at Rs.962 crore, up from Rs.509 crore posted during the corresponding period last fiscal (2012-13).

The total revenue of the company was up by 13.5 percent at Rs.22,219 crore during the fourth quarter from Rs.19,582 crore in corresponding period in 2012-13.

New keyboard recognises hand gestures

A prototype mechanical keyboard that recognises hand gestures performed on or immediately above the keys has been developed.

The Type-Hover-Swipe keyboard, developed by a team at Microsoft Research, features infrared proximity sensors embedded in a printed circuit board.

Each sensor node peeks out from between the regular key caps, tracking the movement of the user’s hands as they touch the keyboard or hover above it.

India win 7 medals in International gymnastics event in Perth

Indian gymnasts returned with a rich haul of seven medals, including three golds, from the International Commonwealth Championships held at Perth, Australia from April 26 to 27.

According to a Sports Authority of India (SAI) statement, apart from three gold medals Indian gymnasts also bagged three silver and one bronze from the two-day event.

While 2010 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallist Ashish Kumar won two gold medals for India, female gymnast Dipa Karmakar bagged the other yellow metal.

Pak couple finally gets visa for their son born at Jaisalmer

The Pakistani couple who was denied permission to board the Thar Express at Rajasthan’s Munabao railway station four days ago, finally got a visa for their 15-day-old son from the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, the family sources said here.

Mai Fatima and her husband Meer Mohammed, after meeting the Pakistan High Commission officials, received the visa for their baby boy born in Jaisalmer on April 14, their relative Rasool Khan told PTI over phone.

Ukrainian PM calls for autonomy to ease tensions

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk urged lawmakers Tuesday to amend the country’s constitution to grant more power to local governments in a bid to ease tensions in eastern regions.

“The excessive powers of the central government should be abolished, and a significant part of the political, economic, financial, social and human authorities must be transferred to the local communities,” Xinhua quoted Yatsenyuk as telling the parliament.
