Student outfits going all out to support their parent parties

With Lok Sabha Elections in Delhi less than two weeks away, the student wings of various political parties in the national capital have started pitching in with street plays, debates, rock shows and door-to-door campaigning.

The Delhi University unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ wing of BJP, has drawn up a detail campaigning plan to seek votes for Narendra Modi, which includes holding around 1,200 street plays.

Former BSP MLA declared absconding in connection to gang-rape case

A former BSP MLA, declared absconding by a local court in connection with the gang-rape and abduction case of a girl, was taken into custody by local police from a hospital in Noida.

Former BSP MLA Yogendra Sagar was taken into custody last night after his counsel informed the court that he was under treatment at Prayagraj Hospital in Noida, SSP Atul Saxena said.

Woman gang-raped, leave in the lurch outside AIIMS

Two men, including a doctor allegedly gang-raped 40-year-old woman in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas on Saturday afternoon.

The woman has also alleged that four men, who also include this duo, had raped her about three years ago.

Police on Sunday arrested 40-year-old Vikas, who is alleged to have raped the woman earlier, while three of the accused are still at large.

Girl killed in fire mishap in UP

A girl was killed and nine others injured in separate fire mishaps that also gutted 185 houses in the district, police said Monday.

Annu (10) was killed and nine others were injured when 100 houses were gutted in a fire in Jurua village in Ramnagar area yesterday, they said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.

In another fire mishap, 85 houses were gutted in Madhavpur and Belwapur villages, police said.

Genetic markers could help predict stroke in patients with heart disease

Researchers at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City have identified a biological process that could help physicians predict when someone with heart disease is likely to have a heart attack in the near future.

A new study by the team has identified plasma levels of two markers – microRNA 122 and 126 – that appear to decline a few days before a person suffers a heart attack.

Results of the study could help the 715,000 Americans who suffer from heart attacks each year.

Underweight people at as high risk of dying as obese counterparts

Researchers have claimed that underweight people too are at the high risk of dying as obese people are.

The meta-analysis, led by Dr. Joel Ray, a physician-researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital and the hospital’s Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, looked at 51 studies on the links between BMI and deaths from any cause, plus data on newborn weight and stillbirths in Ontario.

He found that adults who are underweight – with a BMI under 18.5 or less – have a 1.8 times higher risk of dying than those with a “normal” BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

Erectile dysfunction could be reversed sans medicines

Researchers have said that by focusing on lifestyle factors and not just relying on medication, men suffering from sexual dysfunction can be successful at reversing their problem

The University of Adelaide researchers highlight the incidence of erectile dysfunction and lack of sexual desire among Australian men aged 35-80 years.

Over a five-year period, 31 per cent of the 810 men involved in the study developed some form of erectile dysfunction.

Gastric surgery cuts heart attack risk by half in obese people

Researchers have said that obese people who have stomach surgery to help them lose weight will halve their risk of heart attack.

The procedures, known as bariatric surgery, involve techniques such as gastric banding.

The research reviewed data from 14 studies involving more than 29,000 patients who underwent bariatric surgery. It reveals that death rates were reduced by 40 per cent, and that heart attacks in particular were reduced by half – compared to obese people who did not have surgery.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Monday said that the Janata Dal (United) is nowhere in the competition in Bihar and that there is Modi wave all over the state.

“All the opinion polls are in favor of BJP and Modi and the ground reality shows that JDU is nowhere in the competition in Bihar. The response to the rallies that I have seen shows there is a Modi wave all over Bihar and he will come and rally here again,” said Sushil Kumar Modi.

Guntur MP Sambasiva Rao joins TDP

Member of Parliament from Guntur, R Sambasiva Rao, who was expelled from the Congress last month, on Monday joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

R Srinivas Rao, who quit the Congress to protest the expulsion of his brother, also joined the TDP in the presence of party chief and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu here.

Sambasiva Rao told reporters that the development of Seemandhra was possible only under the rule of TDP.

Youth attacked by rowdy sheeter
(Siasat News): The attack on a youth by a rowdy sheeter sent shock waves at Teegalkunta in Falaknuma. Assistant commissioner of police Falaknuma Mr. Mohd. Abdul Bari said rowdy sheeter Irfan attacked one Ehtesham with a knife resulting severe injuries.

He further said that earlier a minor girl got injured in a road accident and two groups gathered there to inquire about the accident and this is how the tension developed.

Rahul Gandhi will take 600 years to implement his infrastructure plans: Modi

Taking a dig at Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi’s infrastructure plans, Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said Gandhi would take 600 years to implement the map which he took 60 years to create in the first place.

Modi was addressing a rally in Belgaum, where he accused the Congress of sky-high arrogance in refusing to answer the questions of people of the country on their performance during their tenure.

Ten killed in Madhya Pradesh road accident

At least ten people were killed and more than 15 injured in a road accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district last night.

The incident occurred when a tractor-trolley carrying villagers was hit by a speedily driven truck on the Ichawar-Rehti road.

The injured have been admitted in Sehore district hospital and seriously injured have been referred to Bhopal. (ANI)

Four IIT-Delhi students killed in accident in Jaisalmer

Four IIT-Delhi final-year students were killed and two other students injured when the Innova they were travelling in overturned near Jaisalmer on Sunday morning.

The students were returning after camping out at Sam and were 5km from Jaisalmer when one of the tyres burst, resulting in the vehicle rolling over several times.

While three students died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital.

The injured were immediately rushed to a hospital. (ANI)

Delhi Metro shuts two stations

The Delhi Metro on Monday shut down two stations in the capital due to a religious gathering on a disputed land.

The two stations are Jor Bagh and INA.

“The two stations were closed for public from 10.45 am due to security reasons,” a Delhi Metro official said.

According to a Delhi Police official, the stations were advised to be shut as members of a particular community are coming together at the disputed Karbala plot in Jor Bagh area.

Artist takes 13 years to turn flat into sci-fi shrine

An amateur artist in London has reportedly spent 10,000 hours or you could say 13 years to transform his two-bed flat into a sci-fi shrine.

One bedroom has been turned into a Flash Gordon shrine, the second is underwater themed complete with sharks and starfish, while the hallway looks like a tomb, the Daily Star reported.

43-year-old business analyst Simon Edwards said that it was a very unusual flat, not to everybody’s taste but he loves it.

He said that paint did not cost much, and painting costs only time and it’s been a fantastic journey for him.

Azam Khan blames Babri demolition for terrorism

Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan has cited the demolition of the disputed Babri mosque structure in Ayodhya as the reason for terrorism in India.

The senior Samajawadi Party (SP) leader commented about the Dec 6, 1992, demolition of the mosque at an election rally in Faizabad city Sunday.

Khan said no one had ever heard of AK-47, RDX and terrorism until the unfortunate incident in Ayodhya.

A new study suggests that reducing meat and dairy consumption could bring agricultural climate pollution down to safe levels.

According to research at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, greenhouse gas emissions from food production may threaten the UN climate target of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy and transportation sectors currently account for the largest share of climate pollution. However, a study from Chalmers now shows that eliminating these emissions would not guarantee staying below the UN limit.

30-year-old Journalist raped

On Friday, a 30-year-old woman journalist was allegedly raped by two persons in Vindhyachal area, police said.

According to DIG Vindhyachal range RK Srivastava, the incident occurred when the victim had gone to Ahstabhuja hill last evening.

One of the accused has been detained and his vehicle has been seized, further investigation is on, added police.

Warden molested hostel girls, detained

The male warden of a private girl’s hostel has been charged of molesting minor girl students from Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet.

The hostel warden of Navya Girls Hostel, Narender Goud, 60- year-old was accused of touching the girls inappropriately and be naughty with them, said the Begumpet police. Following a complaint from Childline, the police have booked a case against the warden.

The incident became known after the city’s Child Helpline received an anonymous call complaining that hostel inmates in Begumpet are being treated badly by the warden.
