Obama warns against military intervention in Ukraine

US President Barack Obama said Friday that Washington is “deeply concerned” about reported Russian military movement in Ukraine and warned that ” there will be costs” for any military intervention in the country.

Any violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be “deeply destabilsing,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying in a hastily arranged speech at the White House, adding that it would violate Russia’s commitment to respect Ukraine’s borders and would invite global condemnation.

Nearly 100 Pakistanis flee to Afghanistan

Nearly 100 people have crossed into Afghanistan from northern Pakistan, a UN spokesperson said Friday, as the Pakistani government is mulling a full- scale offensive to root out Islamist militants in its restive northern tribal region.

“District officials in Pakistan’s North Waziristan report that nearly 20,000 people, mostly women and children, have been displaced since Feb 20 because of military operations in the area, ” Xinhua quoted Martin Nesirky, citing reports of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
