Airtel launches pocket TV app

A mobile app that enables viewers watch their favorite TV programmes while on the move was launched here Thursday by Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service arm of leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel.

Airtel ‘Pocket TV’ is loaded with over 150 Live TV channels and more than 10,000 hours of video content and over 13 channels on anytime TV, a company statement said.

“Pocket TV now promises a never-before library of video content which is available at an affordable price,” the statement said.

Iranian guard not killed on Pakistani soil: Pakistan

Pakistan Thursday promised Iran all help in locating a group of five kidnapped Iranian guards, one of whom was killed by captors this month, but asserted that he or others were not present on its soil.

The Pakistani foreign ministry made the remarks a day after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani issued a warning to the country after the reported execution of the Iranian soldier, Xinhua reported.

President Rouhani spoke to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday and demanded stern and fast action from Islamabad to secure the release of the abducted soldiers.

China launches campaign against rogue journalists

China Thursday launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on fake news and prevent journalists and newspapers from extorting money in return for stories.

The campaign would seek to “prevent extortion by news reporting and contain the spread of fake news”, Xinhua reported citing an official statement.

The campaign, organisers say, would involve more hotlines and online platforms for the public to report malpractice by journalists and newspapers.

Govt issues notice to Kejriwal, asks for Rs 85,000 per month rent

Delhi government has issued a notice to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal asking him to pay a rent of Rs 85,000 per month for the flat in which he has been staying for the past more than a month even after resigning from the chief minister’s post.

Kejriwal had sought an extension to stay in the C-II/23 house at Tilak Lane in central Delhi till his daughter’s examinations in May.

The notice was issued by the special secretary of Public Works Department on Monday. When asked, an AAP spokesperson said Kejriwal will pay the rent.

India abstains from Sri Lanka resolution in Geneva

In a move that will please Colombo, India Thursday sprang a surprise by abstaining from a UN Human Rights Council resolution in Geneva calling for a probe into alleged war crimes by Sri Lanka.

India said the resolution ignores the efforts at reconciliation being done by Sri Lanka in the predominantly Tamil north, including holding of elections.

Contrary to what was widely expected to be a repeat of earlier moves of backing the UN resolution, India Thursday said it “cannot go along with the resolution and will abstain on the resolution under consideration”.

Indian-origin man gets suspended jail term for drug possession

An Indian-origin man has been given a suspended jail term in
Britain on the charge of drug possession.

Narandraprasad Sookun, 42, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, and 200 hours of unpaid work, by a Guildford crown court in Surrey, getwestlondon.com reported.

Police found cannabis worth 5,000 pounds ($8,282) at his home in Hayes in west London in August last year.

He was convicted for illegal drug possession Feb 26 after a five-day trial.

No question of quota in private sector: Congress

The Congress Thursday clarified party vice president Rahul Gandhi’s statement on job reservation in the private sector, saying the party only wants the sector to provide jobs to 10 crore unemployed people.

Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha told the media that Rahul Gandhi and the party were batting for “affirmative action” and not reservation in the private sector.

“There is no question of reservation in private sector jobs, although we want the private sector to take ‘affirmative action’,” Jha said.

Myanmar joins FIFA’s anti-HIV campaign

Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) has joined FIFA’s health programme “Protect the Goal” together with Myanmar National League and UNAIDS, said MFF Thursday.

The programme will create the opportunity to reduce the number of those infected with HIV among youths and educate people through the media and share experiences publicly.
