Disqualify Congress leader for giving false data: Yogendra

AAP leader Yogendra Yadav, candidate for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat, Thursday urged the Election Commission to disqualify Congress candidate Rao Dharampal from contesting the polls for giving false information in his affidavit.

Yadav said in his complaint to the returning officer that Rao Dharampal’s balance sheet shows there are land holdings in the form of a real estate company, estimated to be valued at over Rs.50 crore.

However, details like location, size and ownership share are not mentioned, and so the circle rates cannot be estimated, he said.

Cyberabad police arrests five for murder and stealing cases

The Cyberabad police solved five murders-for-gain cases, after arresting three men who allegedly killed five women at Shadnagar to steal their gold and other valuables, the police said here today.

M Srinivasulu, R Narasimha and M Ravi allegedly lured women who frequented toddy shops under the pretext of providing them work, offered them toddy and took them to isolated places.

Gold, silver and other valuables were stolen from them after plying them with excess quantity of toddy and making them unconscious, the police said.

India abstains from voting against Sri Lanka at UNHRC, resolution passed

India abstained from voting for the US-backed resolution seeking probe into Sri Lankan war crimes at the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday.

“We have voted differently on this resolution. It is very different from previous resolutions and imposes an international investigation mechanism. It is an intrusive approach that undermines national sovereignty,” said Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

No legal hurdle to compensation to MH370 victims’ kin: Experts

Azam urges Centre to restore UP Haj quota

Uttar Pradesh government today requested the Centre to reconsider its decision to decrease the Haj quota of the Uttar Pradesh.

“I have written a letter to External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid asking him to reconsider the Centre’s decision to decrease Haj quota of the state,” state Minority Welfare & Haj Minister, Azam Khan said here.

Last month, the Centre had reduced the Haj quota of UP from 1,21,420 to 1,00,020, he said and noted that this would not be sufficient for the state keeping in mind population of the state.

Meghalaya CM has violated poll code, says Sangma’s party

Former Lok Sabha speaker Purno Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission seeking action against Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for violating the Model Code of Conduct, a party leader said Thursday.

“We have submitted a complaint to the commission against Mukul Sangma for his ‘death wish’ remarks on NPP national president Purno A. Sangma,” said NPP leader Conrad K. Sangma.

The NPP has also asked the Election Commision to increase security for Purno Sangma based on the “threat” by the chief minister.

Toll in Uganda boat accident touches 251

The bodies of 251 Congolese refugees returning to their country from a refugee camp in Uganda, who died Saturday in a boat accident on Lake Albert, have been recovered, Congolese government spokesman Lambert Mende said. There were 292 passengers on board the ill-fated vessel.

“The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) government is shocked at such a huge loss of life,” the government spokesman said when he addressed the media Wednesday.

Special court judge, order stay in Musharraf case

Justice Faisal Arab, who heads the special court set up to try former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf for high treason, remains part of the court and the order calling for the ex-military strongman’s appearance March 31 stands, the court said Thursday.

Ukraine mulls raising transit fees for Russian gas

Ukraine is planning to raise tariffs on the transit of Russian natural gas via its territory in response to Moscow’s decision to raise gas prices, a senior lawmaker said Thursday.

“Negotiations on this issue have actually begun. We have emphasised the need to lift such tariffs,” said Sergei Sobolev, leader of “Fatherland,” a pro-government parliament faction.

Russia’s move to charge Ukraine around $480 per 1,000 cubic metres of gas is forcing Kiev to raise transit fees up to market prices, Sobolev said.
