553 in fray for 28 LS seats in Karnataka

As many as 553 candidates of various political parties and independents are contesting from Karnataka’s 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in the general elections April 17, a senior official said Thursday.

“After a day-long scrutiny, nominations of 553 candidates were in order to contest from the 28 parliamentary seats across the state. Of the 916 nominations filed, 51 were rejected and 864 were accepted,” state chief electoral officer Anil Kumar Jha told reporters here.

Court rejects Loop’s plea to refer matter to Lok Adalat

A court here Thursday dismissed a plea filed by Loop Telecom seeking directions for referring the case against it to the Lok Adalat.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge O.P. Saini dismissed the plea after going through the reply filed by investigating agency and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

The CBI had opposed the plea while DoT said that it would abide by the court order.

The court said that the case does not appear to be fit to be referred to Lok Adalat.

A court here Thursday awarded death penalty to seven people on charges of kidnapping and murdering a two-year-old boy as part of a tantrik ritual in 2010.

District and Sessions Judge Gautam Chaurariya awarded death sentence to Ishwari Yadav (42), who claims to be a tantrik, his wife Kiran alias Guru Mata (35), Mahanand Yadav (30), Rajendra Mahar (23), Nihaluddin (60), Sukhdev Yadav (35) and Hemant Sahu.

The court verdict came in a case dated Nov 23, 2010 when the two-year old boy Chirag, son of Poshan Singh, resident of Ruabandha village in Durg district, went missing from his home.

Motor third party premium goes up from April 1

Come April, the third party (TP) insurance premium for most of the vehicles will go up as per insurance regulator’s directive issued Thursday.

According to the order issued by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) chairman T.S.Vijayan, the TP insurance premium for private cars with less than 1,000 cc engine capacity will be Rs.1,129 up from the current rate of Rs.941.

Delhi LS candidate booked for molestation

A 55-year-old Lok Sabha candidate from Delhi has been booked for molesting and misbehaving with an on-duty woman traffic constable Thursday evening, police said.

Sanjay Gandhi, contesting from the Chandni Chowk parliamentary constituency from Brij Vikas Party, was arrested on a complaint by the 26-year-old woman constable.

In her complaint to police, the woman said Gandhi misbehaved with her and tore her uniform when she was on duty in Model Town area of west Delhi, where the accused stays.

The woman said she was attacked when she stopped the leader’s car for checking.

Court rejects plea seeking lodging of FIR against Geelani

A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a plea seeking lodging of an FIR against hardline separatist Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and three others for allegedly instilling “hatred” among the people of Kashmir and other parts of India.

Metropolitan Magistrate Vijeta Singh Rawat turned down the plea for a police probe against Geelani, Tehreek-E-Hurriyat general secretary Mohd Ashraf Sahrai and Hurriyat Conference members Masarat Alam Bhat and Ghulam Nabi Sumji saying the alleged offences were committed within the state of J&K itself.

Girl raped, brother of BSP worker arrested

An incident of rape of a 15-year-old girl by two persons has come to the light here even as police have arrested an alleged accused, the brother of a BSP leader and Zila panchayat member.

The victim, a class X student, a resident of Partapur area, alleged that she was raped by two men, one of whom is a brother of a local BSP worker, while she was returning from forest yesterday evening, police said today.

The girl later informed her parents about the incident and was sent for medical check-up, they said.

MQM keen on joining Sindh government: Bilawal

Pakistan Peoples Party chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari today said that the MQM was keen on joining the provincial government in Sindh.

Bilawal tweeted saying it would be impossible to work with the MQM if they did not retract their support for martial law and breaking Sindh.

The MQM too has said that PPP has approached it for joining the government.

UN vote on Sri Lanka adopted, India abstains (Roundup)

In a move that will please Colombo, India Thursday joined 11 other countries that abstained from voting on a UN Human Rights Council resolution in Geneva calling for a probe into alleged war crimes by Sri Lanka. However, the resolution was adopted with 23 voting in favour and 12 against.

FBI: analysis of MH370 pilot’s computer files coming soon

The FBI will soon complete its analysis of data from a flight simulator taken from the home of the pilot of a missing Malaysia Airlines jet, the US agency’s director has said.
