Military men who face sexual harassment may experience more distress and work performance problems than military women who face the same problem, new research shows.

“Men may be less likely to think they would be sexually harassed. So it is a particularly strong violation of their expectations that could result in stronger negative reactions,” stressed lead author Isis H. Settles from Michigan State University.

Pakistan court hands out death sentence to Christian man for blasphemy

A Pakistan court has reportedly sentenced a man to death on account of blasphemy, triggering a riot in Lahore.

The accused, Sawan Masih, was found guilty of insulting the Prophet Mohammed, following a conversation with a Muslim friend in the Joseph Colony neighborhood of Lahore in March last year.

According to the Dawn, more than 3000 Muslims stormed through Joseph Colony, torching some 100 Christian homes, after the allegations against Masih emerged.

Facebook starts work on drones to provide Internet to all

Facebook is reportedly working on building drones and lasers that could facilitate its goal of providing Internet connectivity to all.

The social networking giant has formed a team, called Facebook Connectivity Lab, which would invent new technologies in-house to deliver affordable Internet access to everyone, irrespective of technical or financial obstacles.

According to Cnet, the revelation about the Internet providing drone project comes amidst Facebook’s decision to bring aboard five aerospace experts from UK-based Ascenta.

Rodgers says City still ‘favourites’ despite Liverpool uprooting them in PL table

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has said that Manchester City are still favourites for the Premier League, despite overtaking them in the league table with a 2-1 Sunderland win.

Rodgers said that Liverpool will keep working hard, as it is upto other teams to lose, but added that he is not playing it down because if City win their games, they will win the league title.

According to the BBC, Liverpool overtook City in the league rankings with their recent 2-1 Sunderland win and are now just one point behind leaders Chelsea.

UN council votes for Sri Lanka civil war rights abuses inquiry

The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted for a resolution paving the way for an inquiry into rights abuses at the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war.

The United States and the United Kingdom were among the countries, which sponsored a resolution that is for the first time calling for an international probe.

According to the BBC, Sri Lanka has consistently denied allegations of rights abuses and said it is being unfairly targeted.

High-ranking Malaysian cop allegedly blames pilot for MH370 disappearance

A high-ranking Malaysian police official has reportedly insisted that the pilot of the missing Malaysian jet was solely responsible for the plane’s disappearance and presumed crash.

Since the plane’s disappearance on March 8, it has been widely speculated that the pilots of the plane, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and Fariq Abdul Hamid were involved in the incident.

Obama seeks Congress vote to end bulk NSA phone data collection

President Barack Obama has asked Congress to end National Security Agency’s bulk collection of US phone records.

The proposal requires the government to receive a court order to access telecom companies’ records.

The NSA is understood to collect call records from specific telecom firms daily and to keep them for five years, the BBC reports.

The plan follows widespread anger after leaks revealed the full extent of US surveillance operations.

Under the new proposal, the government will reportedly only seek specific records that telecom companies possess.

Researchers have revealed that rates of both preterm birth and hospital admissions for asthma were reduced by 10 percent after laws that prohibited smoking in public places were implemented.

Researchers from University of Edinburgh collaborated with researchers from Maastricht University, Hasselt University, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, found that the introduction of new laws that ban smoking in public places in North America and Europe has been followed by a decrease in rates of premature births and hospital visits for asthma attacks in children.

Sohrabuddin encounter case: SC grants bail to suspended IPS officer Pandiyan

The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Raj Kumar Pandiyan in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

The decision to grant bail came almost four months after the apex court had sought the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI’s) reply on a bail petition forwarded by the suspended and jailed Gujarat IPS officer.

DMK, CPI slam India’s stand on UNHRC resolution on Lanka

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday criticised the central government for abstaining from voting on a U.S.-sponsored resolution for a probe into war crimes in Sri Lanka at a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The resolution was adopted after 23 countries voted in its favour, while 12 voted against it. Two countries abstained from voting in the 47-member-state forum in Geneva.

DMK lawmaker, T. K. S. Elangovan, said India should have moved the resolution.

Act against BJP, Congress over foreign funds, says court

The Delhi High Court Friday asked the central government and the Election Commission to take appropriate actions against the Congress and the BJP for taking foreign funds in violation of law.

Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Jayant Nath allowed the plea of an NGO filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan seeking directions for a probe into donations allegedly taken by the parties from subsidiaries of the Britain-based Vedanta group.

The bench said the concerned authority should act within six months in accordance with the law.

Antidepressant use during pregnancy ups risk of preemies

esearchers have linked antidepressant medications taken by pregnant women with increased rates of preterm birth.

Lead author Krista Huybrechts, MS PhD, from the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said preterm birth is a major clinical problem throughout the world and rates have been increasing over the past two decades. At the same time, rates of antidepressant use during pregnancy have increased approximately four-fold.

MIM workers attack AAP’s Malakpet coordinator

Reports of Aam Aadmi Party workers being harassed on Tuesday and Wednesday have come to the fore. It is said that they were allegedly harassed by Majlis Itehadul Muslimeen workers. The MIM workers attacked 26-year-old, Mohammed Adil Akber, resident of Asman Gadh Coordinator AAP Malakpet constituency leaving him injured. Suspended IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian granted bail

Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to suspended Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian, who is in judicial custody in connection with the alleged fake encounter killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kauserbi near Gandhinagar in November 2005.

The apex court passed the order after studying the CBI’s response on the bail plea of Pandian, who has been languishing in jail for seven years.

The IPS officer had moved the apex court after the Bombay High Court on November 20 rejected his bail application.

US to work with India in Indo-Pacific region
