Not endorsing any party in 2014 polls, declares Aamir

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan Friday shot off a letter to the Election Commission, declaring that he is not endorsing any political party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

He has also sought the poll panel take action to rectify rumours hinting that he has been associated in any manner with the Aam Aadmi Party headed by former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

“Aamir Khan, from day one has made it clear that he will not be endorsing a particular political party. He is not supporting or campaigning for any political party,” said a statement issued on behalf of the actor.

Former Punjab deputy speaker rejoins Congress

The Congress Friday re-admitted former Punjab deputy speaker Bir Devinder Singh into the party.

“Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal to admit Bir Devinder Singh, former deputy speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha in the party with immediate effect,” a party release said.

He had left the party in 2009 to join the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Kejriwal allowed to live in Delhi house till July

Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has been allowed to stay in the government flat allotted to him in Delhi till July 31.

The public works department (PWD) of the Delhi government granted him permission after the Aam Aadmi Party leader said he would like to stay in the same home as his daughter’s examinations were to begin soon.

A letter issued March 21 by Special Secretary (PWD) R.C. Meena to Kejriwal, a copy of which is with IANS, said Kejriwal has been allowed to stay in the flat at C-2/23, Tilak Lane up to July 31.

Farooq Abdullah backs Srinivasan

Union minister and JKCA President Farooq Abdullah today threw his weight behind beleaguered N Srinivasan, saying he will come out clean in the inquiry into IPL spot fixing scandal.

He also expressed hope that the former batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar will fulfill the responsibility as BCCI president in a “good manner”.

“He (Gavaskar) too is a good man and honest player. He has been the captain of Indian cricket team and I am hopeful that he will fulfill the responsibility which the court has given him in a good manner,” Abdulllah told reporters here.

Yoga guru Ramdev today said he was backing BJP as its prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi had extended support to issues raised by him including stopping corruption and bringing back black money to India.

During a road show here in support of BJP’s candidate from Faridabad constituency Krishnapal Gurjar, Ramdev told reporters that he had been assured by Modi and BJP president Rajnath Singh that black money stashed abroad will be brought back to India when the party comes to power.

Kejriwal assaulted during Haryana road show, attacker held

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was Friday evening assaulted by an unidentified man during his road show in Charkhi Dadri town of Haryana’s Bhiwani district, witnesses said. The attacker has been apprehended.

The man climbed the open jeep on which Kejriwal was travelling and tried to hit him during the road show in Charkhi Dadri, about 125 km from New Delhi.

The former Delhi chief minister was hit near his neck, but he was not injured.

The attacker was immediately pinned down by Aam Aadmi Party supporters and beaten up. He was taken away by police who were present at the spot.

Goa leader’s ‘LPG cylinders theory’ on Congress communalism

Even as the debate between communalism and secularism gathers steam ahead of the general election, a Catholic legislator in Goa Friday showed his own way of measuring communalism – the number of cooking gas cylinders.

Caitu Silva, a legislator attached to the Goa Vikas Party (GVP), said the Congress was communal because under the party’s regime, gas cylinders were supplied to churches at a commercial rate.

“The Congress is communal because churches are being given gas cylinders at a commercial rate of Rs.800 odd,” he said.

Researchers have said that the formula for peak exercise heart rate that doctors have used for decades to diagnose heart conditions may be flawed as it does not account for differences between men and women.

The simple formula of “220 minus age” has been widely used to calculate the maximum number of heart beats per minute a person can achieve.

Many people use it to derive their target heart rate during a workout. Doctors use it to determine how hard a patient should exercise during a common diagnostic test known as the exercise stress test.

List contribution to Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa challenges Chidambaram

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa Friday challenged union Finance Minister P.Chidambaram to list out his contribution to his Sivaganga constituency and the state.

Addressing an election rally here, around 455 km from Chennai, Jayalalithaa, referring to her rally speech at Sivaganga, said: “Chidambaram should list out his contribution to Tamil Nadu instead of saying there is no truth in my speech.”

She said the country knows that Chidambaram has not done anything to Tamil Nadu or Sivaganga.

Kerala HC orders CBI probe into CM’s gunman’s land deal

The Kerala High Court Friday ordered a CBI probe into an alleged land deal involving a former gunman of Oommen Chandy. The chief minister welcomed the decision, saying “whenever there is a demand for a CBI probe, we have agreed to it”.

A division bench of the high court, headed by Justice Haroon Rashid, Friday heard a petition over two land deals worth Rs.400 crore involving 45 acres of land believed to have been usurped by Chandy’s former gunman Salim Raj and his accomplices.

The court handed the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Multiple sightings of objects possibly of lost jet reported (Roundup)

A number of aircraft spotted various objects possibly of the lost Malaysian jet in a new search area in the southern Indian Ocean Friday but confirmation by ship can only happen Saturday, Australian authorities said at the conclusion of the day’s search operation.

“Five aircraft spotted multiple objects of various colours during Friday’s search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370,” the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said in its latest update Friday.

“Search activities have now concluded. A total of 256,000 sq km was searched,” it added.

Woman gang raped in Delhi, two arrested

A woman was gang raped by two people on the pretext of being provided a job, police said Friday, adding the alleged attackers have been arrested.

The woman, 26, was reportedly raped in a room of a factory located in Gandhi Nagar of east Delhi Thursday afternoon.

The woman informed police about her ordeal after the incident.

“Victim’s medical report confirmed rape. At least 14 people were interrogated since Thursday and two of them identified as Devender, 31, and Sanjay, 39, were arrested,” said a police official.

Women’s roles in Bollywood are changing: Katrina Kaif

Actress Katrina Kaif thinks that the portrayal of women in Bollywood films has changed.

“The portrayal of women has changed over a period of time… The kind of roles and films that are being made with women are great. We not only have women-centric films but even in a love story, where hero and heroine have equal role, the characters of women are strong and not stereotypical,” Katrina, 30, told PTI.

“Earlier the roles of women were more or less same, they were repeated, but today there is a difference. And people are loving it,” she said.

Yousuf to join national selection committee

Pakistan’s former Test captain Mohammad Yousuf has agreed to join the new national selection committee that will take charge from April 1 under the chairmanship of Rashid Latif.

According to a reliable source in the Pakistan Cricket Board, Haroon Rasheed, a former Test batsman who has remained a selector and head coach and manager of the national junior and senior teams in the past, will also work as co-opted member of the selection committee.

Haroon is presently Director Game Development in the national cricket academy in Lahore.

Plane search shifted over 1,000 km, multiple objects spotted

The search for the crashed Malaysian jet today dramatically shifted 1,100 km further northeast in the Indian Ocean and multiple objects were spotted in the new area with fresh radar data suggesting the plane flew faster and ran out of fuel more quickly than estimated.

In a bid to elevate awareness among people for greater participation in the democratic process, members of Election Commission campaigned through folk theatre and street songs to sensitize voters in different corners of Himachal Pradesh.

The folk artists performed dances and songs in Kushala, Lagdu and Kaylu villages of Shogi and Taradevi region nearly 30 kilometers from state capital, Shimla.

Maoists trigger landmine blast in Odisha, injure two

Two personnel of paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) were injured when Maoists triggered a landmine blast in Malkangiri district of Odisha on Friday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pramod Kumar Bagh, said explosive went off when the BSF personnel were conducting a search after removing Maoist posters in the mountainous area.

“A blast took place when BSF personnel, who were patrolling, tried to remove a Maoist poster near Telarai Mountain. Two personnel were injured and they have been shifted to Malkangiri hospital,” Bagh said.

BJD workers protest against former Congress leader joining their party

Party workers of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) protested in Odisha on Friday after former leader of the Congress Hema Gamang joined the BJD.

Reportedly, she sent her resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi stating that she was quitting following the attitude of chief of Congress Committee in Odisha towards senior leaders.

After her joining, BJD supporters took to streets and protested against her induction in the party.
