Three Indians, four NRIs win US women’s empowerment award

Three Indians and four persons of Indian origin have received the 2013 World of Difference Awards’ from US-based The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) for their work for women’s empowerment.

The 100 winners in different categories were presented the awards by TIAW president Lisa Kaiser Hickey at a ceremony here Thursday.

Abhay Khandagle, a Pune University professor of Zoology, has been recognised as “a champion for women’s empowerment for the past 20 years”.

BIE seeks qualified lecturers for inter spot valuation

The Board of Intermediate Education on Friday informed all the Principals/Managements of Private Junior Colleges and Composite Degree Colleges, offering Intermediate courses in the State that the IPE March-2014 spot valuation camps are being commenced.

Therefore, they have been directed to send their college qualified lecturers for the spot valuation camp invariably. If, any deviation is noticed in this regard, stringent action would be taken against the managements including de-affiliation of the college, BIE Secretary Rama Sankar Naik said. (INN)

Remit Property Tax dues by March 31: GHMC

GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar has appealed to all the tax payers to remit their dues by 29th to 31st March in order to avoid the penal interest which will be in effect from 1st April onwards as the GO Ms.no.90, dated 1st March 2014 gets null and void after 31st March, 2014.

The Commissioner, GHMC instructed the tax Payers to beware of the penal interest in case of dishonor of their cheques presented on or before 31st March, 2014.

Trinamool lodges poll complaint against Rahul Gandhi

The Trinamool Congress has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for the alleged presence of school students at an election rally addressed by him in West Bengal, an official said Friday.

According to assistant chief electoral officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharji, Trinamool national general secretary Mukul Roy had filed a complaint few days ago for the alleged presence of school-goers at Gandhi’s Alipurduar rally in the state’s Jalpaiguri district recently.

Seemandhra Congress to finalise poll strategy on Saturday

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee Vice-President Y Gangadhar on Friday informed that the party’s strategy for the ensuing general elections would be discussed and finalised in a meeting to be held on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons at Indira Bhavan here, Gangadhar said that the meeting would be attended by all the office bearers of Districts Congress Committees, City Congress Committees and PCC. He said that leaders would discuss the methodology to be adopted to approach the voters in the forthcoming elections.

AIIMS medics save eight lives through organ donation

Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here Friday saved eight lives through cadaver organ donation.

The donor was a 45-year-old woman victim of a road accident who received severe head injuries, and was declared brain dead March 27, the hospital said.

The husband and brother of the deceased agreed to sign the consent form, allowing the donation of her liver, heart valves, kidneys and corneas.

“The Organ Retrieval and Banking Organisation was alerted, and the AIIMS transplant coordinator counselled the family for organ donation,” said an AIIMS statement.

Ponnala ready for debate on Telangana formation

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Friday stated that he was ready for an open debate on the Telangana formation and its development.

Speaking to media persons at his residence here, Ponnala said that it was the Congress party that bifurcated Andhra Pradesh to carve out Telangana. He said that major credit for the Telangana formation goes to Congress party and its president Sonia Gandhi. He said he was ready for an open debate on the issue with any political party or leader.

Indian-origin actress suing BBC for racism

An Indian-origin actress is suing BBC for up to one million pounds ($1.6 million) for a racist remark made by the host of a popular motor show, media reported Friday.

Somi Guha, 36, has instructed her lawyers to take action after Jeremy Clarkson, host of the programme Top Gear, made the racist remark during a series finale, the Daily Mail reported.

Clarkson allegedly used the word “slope” – a derogatory term used for people of Asian descent – in the Top Gear Burma Special.

Guha consulted lawyers at Equal Justice who said this could cost the BBC up to 1 million pounds.

Bifurcation Committee to meet unions on Saturday

The Committee for assisting Government of India in drafting the guidelines for Allocation of Employees headed by retired IAS officer CR Kamalanathan will hold consultation with the employee associations to receive their views on the principles and procedure for allocation of staff between the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The meeting will be held in the Finance Department Conference Hall of D-Block in the Secretariat on Saturday between 2 PM and 5 PM.

BJP not in a hurry to ally with TDP: Javedkar

BJP National Spokesperson Prakash Javedkar on Friday stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party was not in a hurry for alliance with the Telugu Desam Party.

Former air hostess Geetika Sharma’s brother Friday moved the Delhi High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, who was in jail for the past 18 months after being accused of abetting his sister’s suicide.

Approaching the high court, Sharma’s brother contended that Kanda is an influential person and while on bail, will try to tamper with evidence and influence the witnesses.

Asking the court to cancel the bail given to Kanda, Sharma’s brother said that trial court has not taken into consideration all the aspects while granting him bail.

Maoists set 15 trucks on fire in Chhattisgarh

Armed Maoists Friday went on a rampage at an iron ore mining point in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh and set 15 trucks and an excavator vehicle on fire, police said.

Ultras dressed like villagers intercepted the convoy of trucks at Kirandul and burnt down the vehicles, but fled when police reached the site surrounded by hills on two sides, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Narendra Khare told IANS.

He said no civilian or policeman was injured in the act of arson.

The trucks were on way to a steel plant in Kirandul for supplying iron ore to a plant in Visakhapatnam.

SC directs WB govt. to give Rs 5 lakh as compensation to Birbhum gangrape victim

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the West Bengal government to give five lakh rupees as compensation to the 20-year-old victim of Birbhum gangrape incident.

This compensation would be given in addition to the already sanctioned 50,000 rupees.

A bench of comprising of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and two others also said that the state government had failed to protect the fundamental right of the victim. (ANI)

Kejriwal claims violence is against AAP’s philosophy

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, Arvind Kejriwal , on Friday evening once again had to face the wrath of an unidentified person, who attacked him while he was campaigning.

AAP volunteers immediately pounced on Kejriwal’s attacker and overpowered him. Soon after the AAP chief urged his followers not to resort to violence as that was not what AAP stands for.

“Remember what Gandhiji had said. We need to follow the philosophy as said by him, even if you get one slap on one side of your cheek, then offer the other one,” Kejriwal said.

Anna-supporter assaults Kejriwal in Haryana, nabbed

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was Friday evening assaulted by a man who claimed to be a supporter of social activist Anna Hazare during a road show in Charkhi Dadri town of Haryana’s Bhiwani district, witnesses said. The attacker has been arrested.

The man climbed the open jeep on which Kejriwal was travelling and tried to hit him during the road show in Charkhi Dadri, about 125 km from New Delhi.

The former Delhi chief minister was hit near his neck, but he was not injured.

Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma Friday termed Maharashtra the “capital of paid news”, and urged the media to put an end to this practice. The comment led to an uproar from the media.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today slammed his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi for allegedly seeing terrorism through ‘communal’ eyes.

“Only a person like him (Modi) can say what he has said about the terror attack at Bodh Gaya last year as he has a habit of seeing such incidents through communal eyes,” Kumar said at an election meeting in favour of JD(U) nominee Jitan Ram Manjhi, contesting on Gaya (SC) Lok Sabha seat.
