LJP chief Paswan calls on Advani

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani on Saturday and reportedly discussed the future prospects of his party within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Paswan has been trying to boost his party prospects within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the run-up to the general elections due by May.

Paswan’s son Chirag said he was confident that all other like-minded parties would also join the NDA.

De Villiers unsure about succeeding Proteas current Test captain Smith

Mt. Gox sued over 8,50,000 Bitcoins loss

A Chicago based law firm has filed a suit against Mt. Gox, which was once the largest Bitcoin exchange in the world, over loss of 8,50,000 Bitcoin units.

Mt. Gox, which is in outstanding debt of about 63.6 million dollars, had earlier filed for bankruptcy protection over their loss of Bitcoin units including 7,50,000 units belonging to customers worth 477 million dollars.

According to Tech Crunch, the law firm, Edelson PC, filed the lawsuit on behalf of someone named Gregory Greene and all the other U.S. residents who are affected by the collapse of Mt. Gox.

Arrested Sahara chief Roy lodged in UP guest house, to appear before SC on Tuesday

Sahara Group founder and chairman Subrata Roy has been placed in police custody till March 4, and is being held in a guest house of the Uttar Pradesh forest department on the outskirts of Lucknow city.

Roy is supposed to be produced before the Supreme Court by 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

A Lucknow CJM court reserved its order to keep Roy in police custody till March 4 yesterday, after Roy was produced before the court.

Roy had surrendered before the Lucknow police and had said that he respected the procedure of law and did not have any problem with it.

Proposed draft ordinances are ultra viruses: Swamy

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today termed the proposed draft ordinances “ultra vires” of the Constitution and urged President Pranab Mukherjee to seek legal opinion before promulgating them.

“The proposed draft ordinances to be considered by the Union Cabinet for proclamation by the President are ultra vires of the Constitution.

“The house is adjourned but not dissolved, this ordinance would be outside the nature and powers of the President under Article 53,” Swamy said in a statement.

Over 74,000 students appear for inter practical exams

As many as 74,062 students appeared for the Practical Examinations of IPE March 2014 held at 1051 Centres across the State on the 16th day on Saturday.

Necessary arrangements were made to conduct practical exams. The Flying Squads with video cameras visited the examination centers. The examinations have been conducted smoothly and peacefully without any untoward incident, the Board of Intermediate said in a press release. (INN)

‘Gap widening between Muslims, advantaged sections in edu’

The gap between Muslims and the advantaged sections of Indian society in the field of education has been widening since the 80s, according to a report presented at a seminar at Aligarh Muslim University.

In the paper presented today at the seminar on ‘Traditional versus Modern education in Muslims’, chairman of Institute of Objective Studies Mohammad Manzur Alam said “Muslims have the highest percentage of individuals who have never attended any school.”

This was “most prominent amongst Muslim OBC children in the age group of 6 to 14,” he said.

Gold falls on sustained selling, global cues

Gold prices fell by Rs 200 to Rs 31,100 per ten grams in the national capital today on sustained selling by stockists and weak global cues.

However, silver recovered by Rs 740 to Rs 47,300 per kg on low level buying by industrial units after yesterday’s sharp fall of Rs 1,740.

Marketmen said sustained selling by stockists in tandem with weakening global trend as gains in equities curbed demand for the precious metal as an alternative investment kept pressure on gold prices to trade further lower.

Pakistani clerics seek military action to eliminate Taliban

Muslim scholars from different schools of thought have asked the Pakistani military to eliminate the Taliban, saying the civil-military leadership should take bold decisions on the issue.

Shia and Sunni groups observed Friday as “Anti-Taliban Day” across the country to show solidarity with the armed forces fighting terrorists.

The groups, including Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST), Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Majlis-e-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen (MWM) and Tahafuz-Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz (TNRM), held small rallies in different parts of the country.

Girl raped by twin brothers

A first year engineering student was allegedly raped by two of her seniors, who are twins, police said today.

The girl in her complaint lodged yesterday alleged that the two brothers, her seniors in college, had raped her on February 23 after taking her to their house at Thudiyalur here, police said.

Acting on the complaint, police today took into custody the two students for interrogation in the presence of a senior police official, they said.

The girl’s parents are in the Middle East, police said.

Yuvraj powers Punjab to win over Delhi

Yuvraj Singh propelled Punjab to a six-wicket win over defending champions Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (North Zone) at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Saturday.

Punjab recovered from a bad start to overcome Delhi’s 228 in 47 overs, largely due to the 143-run stand Yuvraj (96 off 95 balls) and Gurkeerat Singh Mann (53 off 64) shared for the fifth-wicket.

Punjab had lost their opening match against Haryana Thursday and Delhi had won against Jammu and Kashmir.

Rahul meets rickshaw pullers, offers prayers at temple

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi interacted Saturday with rickshaw pullers and auto drivers and later prayed at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, on the second day of his visit to Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress leader flew to Varanasi around noon and drove to the Cantonment railway station amid tight security.

As his cavalcade drove through the lanes of the temple city, people lined up on the roadside to catch a glimpse of him.

Gandhi was accompanied by party general secretary Madhusudan Mistry and union minister Oscar Fernandes.

Close brothel, orders Delhi court

A special court here ordered shutting down of a brothel here and awarded one year jail term to a woman for pushing a girl into flesh trade.

Fast Track court presided by Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja sentenced one year rigorous imprisonment to a woman under various section of Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act.

The court in the past week ordered closure of the brothel on GB road, a redlight area.

It also slapped a fine of Rs.4,000 on the woman.

UN relief agencies aid delivery to Syria

Humanitarian aid supplies have been delivered to a number of areas in Syria over the past few days, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Thursday airlifted 31 metric tonnes of relief supplies from Damascus to Qamishly, including medicines, vaccines for 250,000 people, medical equipment and winter relief items, Nesirky said at a daily briefing here Friday.

Sharad Yadav blames BJP for Bihar not getting special status

Janata Dal-United (JDU) president Sharad Yadav has blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not doing enough to get special status for Bihar during their rule in the state.

“They do drama, the special status to Bihar would have been granted, if they had passed the issue in state assembly during their regime in the state,” said Yadav.

“We have been fighting for this issue for a long time and we will make sure that we get special status for the state,” Yadav added.

Lalu offers 11 seats to Cong, 1 to NCP

Putting pressure on Congress, RJD chief Lalu Prasad today offered 11 seats to Congress and asked the party to give its acceptance by tomorrow when his party’s Parliamentary Board will meet here.

RJD has also offered one out of the 40 seats in the state to another Congress ally NCP.

The development comes after an old ally LJP walked over to the BJP camp.

FB post sparks communal tension in Nainital

Tension prevailed in Nainital district’s Ramnagar town after objectionable pictures hurting the religious sentiments of a community were uploaded on a social networking site, a senior police official said here.

Pictures with objectionable content were uploaded by a youth on Facebook, triggering tension late last night in Ramnagar as the members of one community gathered outside the Kotwali and hurled stones at the police station, Additional DG Ram Singh Meena told PTI.
