Bill Gates regains world’s richest man title: Forbes

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has regained the title of the world’s richest man in the Forbes magazine’s annual billionaire list that includes 56 India based billionaires led by RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani.

Gates is back at the top spot after a four-year hiatus, reclaiming the title of world’s richest person from Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu, who had ranked number 1 for the previous four years.

Gates, whose fortune rose by USD 9 billion in the past year to USD 76 billion, has held the top spot for 15 of the past 20 years.

IFC explores energy, infrastructure projects in Egypt

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is exploring alternative energy and infrastructure projects in Egypt.

According to IFC’s regional vice president, the company is keen on having a partnership with the Egyptian government and the private sector for establishing projects in the country in coming months.

These projects are in the fields of alternative energy in the industrial sector and logistics service development, said Dimitris Tsitsiragos, vice president of IFC for Europe, Central Asia, Middle East, and North Africa.

Myanmar reassured India Monday in its capital city here that its soil will not be allowed to be used for any insurgency movement against its South Asian neighbour.

US suspends military cooperation with Russia

The US Defence Department has suspended all military-to-military engagements with Russia because of Moscow’s military movement in Ukraine.

The suspension covers bilateral meetings, port visits and planning conferences, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, adding the Pentagon values the relationship it has developed with the Russian military in the last few years.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday asked party MPs to go to the Lok Sabha polls with confidence as she hosted a dinner for them here.

Minor Dalit girl immolates self after molestation

A minor Dalit girl set herself ablaze, after a youth allegedly had molested her in Garhakota town in the district, police said on Monday.

The victim took the extreme step after a youth identified as Nilesh Ladia, allegedly molested her, they said, adding that her father had lodged a complaint.

The 16-year-old girl suffered 100% burn injuries and is under treatment at the district hospital, the police said.

Examining steps to ‘isolate’ Russia: Obama

US President Barack Obama said Monday that his administration is examining “a whole series of” economic and diplomatic steps to “isolate” Russia over its refusal to withdraw military forces from the Ukrainian republic of Crimea.

Taken steps to enhance safety, says Navy

After accidents involving some submarines caused concern, the Indian Navy on Monday said it had taken several measures to enhance safety of its vessels including extensive checks of weapon systems and audit of the standard operating procedures.

“Post recent incidents onboard submarines, safety stand-downs were ordered and extensive checks on weapon related safety systems and audit of standard operating procedures on all operational submarines were ordered,” a Navy release said.

Yanukovych asks Putin to use force in Ukraine: Russian envoy

Ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych has requested Russian President Vladimir Putin in a letter to use force to help restore law and order in his turmoil-stricken country, Moscow’s UN ambassador said here Monday.

Vitaly Churkin showed a copy of the letter to the members of the UN Security Council as he spoke at an open council meeting on the current crisis in Ukraine, reported Xinhua.
