Women in bars more prone to sexual aggression

Sexual assault continued to be a pervasive problem in society and inside a bar or pub and sexual aggression against women has become a common experience, revealed a study.

The bar-based sexual aggression often reflects intentional sexual invasiveness and unwanted persistence rather than misperceptions in sexual advances.

“Bar-based aggression is almost certainly more likely to involve people who do not know each other very well or at all,” said Kate Graham, a senior scientist at the centre for addiction and mental health at the University of Toronto.

Plane with crew of 5 crashes in Iran

Iran’s official news agency says a small plane has crashed in the Persian Gulf with the fate of the five crew members aboard unknown.

The official IRNA news agency says the plane, which belonged to the State Aviation Organisation, was on a flight to test some aviation equipment when it crashed today off Kish Island, well known as a tourist resort.

IRNA says rescue teams have rushed to the site of the crash but have not found any bodies.

Iran has had a history of air accidents, often blamed on poor badly maintained planes.

Court bans Hamas activities in Egypt

An Egyptian court decided Tuesday to ban all activities of the Palestinian Hamas movement and seize its headquarters in Cairo, media reported.

A lawsuit was filed to ban the movement’s activities and designate it as a terrorist group after the removal of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July, Xinhua reported citing the state-run Ahram website.

The Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and is well known for its support to the group, from which Morsi hails.

Patrick Snay, 69, a former headmaster of Gulliver Preparatory School in Florida was set to receive the amount after settling a 2011 age discrimination suit with the school he once headed.

However, his daughter, Dana ruined the USD 80,000 deal by blabbing about it on Facebook, the ‘Miami Herald’ reported.

“Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver. Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT,” she wrote on the social networking website.

Rupee trims initial losses; trades 4 paise lower

The rupee trimmed initial losses but was still trading lower by 4 paise to 62.08 against the US dollar in late morning deals today on bouts of demand for the American currency from banks and importers.

The domestic currency resumed lower at 62.12 per dollar as against the previous close of 62.04 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) and weakened further to 62.15 on sustained dollar demand from importers.

The rupee was quoting at 62.08 per dollar at 1040 hours. It hovered in a range of 62.15-62.075 per dollar during late morning deals.

Brain injury may be present even without symptoms

Damage to the brain may still occur even if symptoms of traumatic brain injury are not present, scientists, including one of Indian origin, suggest.

Veterans exposed to explosions who do not report symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) may still have damage to the brain’s white matter comparable to those with TBI, researchers said.

The findings suggest that a lack of clear TBI symptoms following an explosion may not accurately reflect the extent of brain injury, they said.

Eating fish can boost good cholesterol levels

Increasing the intake of fish to a minimum of three to four weekly meals can boost good cholesterol levels which may provide protection against heart diseases, a new study has found.

People who increased their intake of fatty fish had more large High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles in their blood than those who were less frequent eaters of fish, said researchers at the University of Eastern Finland.

The study provides new information on how the consumption of fish affects the size and lipid concentrations of lipoproteins which transport lipids in the blood, researchers said.

Texting and walking more dangerous than texting while driving

Texting while walking may result in more injuries per mile than distracted driving, scientists have found.

Consequences of distracted walking include bumping into walls, falling down stairs, tripping over clutter or stepping into traffic.

The issue is so common that in London, bumpers were placed onto light posts along a frequented avenue to prevent people from slamming into them, researchers from University at Buffalo in the US said.

Congress leaders against alliance with TRS

With TRS ruling out merger with the Congress party, the latter has asked its cadres in Telangana to be ready to go alone in the forthcoming elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assembly.

Congress leaders from Telangana also made it clear that they are not for an alliance with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

He was suffering from deep mental tension for fear of losing job. According to his family sources he didn’t talk to anyone during the past three days. He remained withdrawn. He hanged himself to death yesterday night. Investigations are underway.
