Maoists abduct five villagers in Bihar

A group of armed Maoists abducted five people from a Bihar village, police said Saturday.

The Maoists struck at Dhawatand village in Jamui district, about 200 km from here.

Maoists kidnapped them after the villagers failed to trace a villager Pintu Koda, police said.

Maoists claimed that eight of their men were killed by police with the help of villagers, including Koda, in 2010.

BJP favours GST: Modi

BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said his party was in favour of bringing in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) but claimed it was the central government that had not done the preparation required for its implementation.

“As far as BJP is concerned, we are in favour of the GST. Nobody should have any doubts regarding it,” Modi said addressing an event.

The Gujarat Chief Minister said the states had concerns related to their finances which the Centre should deal with sympathetically.

Rosetta spacecraft sets sights on destination comet

ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft caught a first glimpse of its destination comet since waking up from deep-space hibernation on January 20 this year.

OSIRIS, the Optical, Spectroscopic and Infrared Remote Imaging System, developed under the leadership of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Sonnensystemforschung in Gottingen, Germany, has two cameras for imaging the comet. One covers a wide angle, while the narrow-angle camera covers a smaller field at higher resolution.

Cricketer-turned-MP Mohammad Azharuddin has dismissed as “useless talk” reports of non— cooperation by Congress workers in his Tonk—Sawai Madhopur constituency for being seen as an ‘outsider’, saying there is no restriction on anyone to work anywhere in India.

A section of the media reported that the sitting MP from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh is facing opposition from party workers who are holding demonstrations and demanding that the ticket be given to a local party worker.

Indian–origin Dutch woman gets U.S. Award

An Indian–origin Dutch woman has been presented with the “World of Difference” award here in recognition of her non–governmental work in Delhi among destitute women.

Co–founder of WORK+SHELTER, a Delhi-based NGO, Namita Krul–Taneja, was presented the award by Lisa Kaiser Hickey, president of The International Alliance For Women (TIAW) at a ceremony held here.

Cabbage Paratha

Ingredients

3 cups Wheat Flour

1 cup Cabbage, grated

1 finely chopped Ginger (finely chopped)

1 tsp chopped Green Chilies

1 tbsp Fresh Coriander (finely chopped)

1/2 tsp Garam Masala

Butter/Oil

Salt

Method

Mix the wheat flour and salt in a bowl.

Then add 1 teaspoon oil, grated cabbage, coriander, ginger and green chilies and again mix well.

Now make a soft dough out of this by mixing enough water.

Take little portion of the dough and make a round ball.

Roll this ball into the shape of a round paratha.

A group of India and American no-profit organisations and other groups have urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, not to succumb to the pressure of the US administration and reject the misleading allegations of US Business associations on India’s trade and economic policies.

White Bindi project campaigns against child marriage

Sporting a white bindi might make for a style statement but the quirky trend is now being used to speak up against the practice of child marriages.

To mobilise public opinion against child marriages, an NGO kickstarted a “No Child Brides” campaign here by unveiling an interactive art installation fashioned out of thousands of white bindis.

The artwork comprises a portrait of a 15-year-old girl from Jharkhand, decorated with a total of 39,000 binds – to match the reported number of child marriages taking place daily across the world.

Hindu temple broken into, set on fire in Pakistan

A Hindu temple has been desecrated and set on fire by three unidentified miscreants in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, two weeks ahead of an annual fair at the temple.

The caretaker of the temple of Hindu deity, Hanuman, in Latifabad here told police that three men came yesterday to offer prayers.

“But after offering prayers they first broke a statue of Hanuman and then sprayed kerosine oil and set it on fire,” said a police official.

Darshan, the interim caretaker of the temple, said the attackers ran away when he called for help.

PM to campaign for Congress in Dibrugarh today

Ahead of 2014 General Elections, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will on Saturday visit Assam to support the Congress candidate in Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency.

Though 80-year-old Singh has officially declared that he would not seek a third term, yet he will be campaigning for the party in Assam from where he has been a Rajya Sabha member.

On March 27, Rahul Gandhi had addressed public rallies in Kohima, Tezpur and Dibrugarh in the state where he was felicitated by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Assam has 14 Lok Sabha constituencies. The state will go to polls on April 7, 12, 24.

Britain to “modernize” court system

Britain will invest $624 million between 2015 and 2020 to “modernize” nearly 3,000 courtrooms in the country in a bid to reduce financial costs and deliver better judicial services, authorities have said.

The British Treasury has agreed to an investment of up to 75 million pounds per year over the five years from 2015/16, which will be used to upgrade and modernize the country’s courts, Xinhua quoted the ministry of justice as saying Friday.

US talking to India, China to isolate Russia

The United States says it is talking with India and China among others as part of diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia over its annexation of Crimea, but it had not yet asked them to impose any sanctions.

“Well, I don’t think we’re there yet. Obviously, we’ve been consulting very closely with the Europeans about sanctions,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday when asked if the US was going to seek Iran-oil like sanction from countries outside NATO.

5 crew members killed as IAF plane crashes

In a major setback to the Air Force, a newly acquired US-made C—130J transport aircraft on Friday crashed near Gwalior after taking off from Agra air base, killing five crew members, including four officers.

Two Wing Commanders, two Squadron Leaders and another crew member were killed in the Super Hercules Special Operations plane crash, the Defence Public Relations Officer told PTI in Jaipur.

Superstar Aamir Khan has written a letter to the Election Commission (EC) clarifying that he is not endorsing any particular political party, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Apparently, it was brought to Aamir’s notice that a social campaign doing the rounds that he was supporting AAP.

Some candidates of AAP allegedly took to twitter and used Aamir’s image in one of their campaign posters, claiming that the 49-year-old ‘Dhoom 3’ star was supporting their party.

‘US will work with whoever is chosen by Indian people’

Suggesting that it was past the “difficult” Khobragade affair, the US has reiterated that it will work with whoever is chosen by the Indian people in the next month’s election to lead the new government.

“Obviously, we are paying attention to what’s happening in India,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday when asked if it was following India’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

“As we’ve said, it is for the people of India to decide their future,” she said. “We will work with whoever the people of India think should be their next leadership.”

Most Austrians still want to stay within EU: Survey

Nearly 64 percent of Austrians want their country to stay within the European Union while another 24 percent prefer withdrawal, according to a latest survey.

Almost 13 percent expressed no opinion on the issue, Xinhua cited from a poll released by the Austrian Society for European Politics (OeGfE) Friday.

However, the survey also found that Austrians still “have plenty to criticize about the EU”, said OeGfE secretary general Paul Schmidt.

Imran Masood arrested for hate speech

Congress Lok Sabha candidate Imran Masood was on Saturday arrested on charges of hate speech in which he threatened to “chop” Narendra Modi “into pieces”, remarks that led to an FIR being filed against him by police besides sparking an outrage.

Mr. Masood was arrested in the early hours, police said.

Congress had distanced itself from the remarks by Mr. Masood, who is contesting from Saharanpur, saying it abjures violence whether of language or otherwise while BJP had condemned it as inflammatory and dragged Congress president Sonia Gandhi into the controversy.

Billboard that says ‘Jesus is Muslim’

A group plans to protest near a North Side billboard carrying messages about the Islamic faith.

Protesters are specifically opposed to the message “Jesus is Muslim” that some recently saw on the billboard on Cleveland Avenue. The message did not appear on the billboard this afternoon, however.

The messages placed by the Ask a Muslim organization also list the group’s website.

Members of several Christian churches say they will pray, preach, sing and carry signs on Saturday to promote their belief that Jesus is the son of God who rose from the dead.

Britain announces cultural programme to commemorate WWI

Britain has announced a major cultural and artistic programme that will take place nationwide to mark the centenary of WWI.

The programme, named “14-18 NOW”, will work with other organisations across the country to commission large scale cultural projects for WWI memorials, Xinhua quoted the British Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as saying Friday.

The programme will begin with events marking the anniversary of the declaration of WWI August 4, with a national candlelit vigil to be held on the day to inspire communities to reflect on the years of war.
