US President Barack Obama met a Saudi women’s rights activist today, the same day women have pledged to defy a driving ban, as he wrapped up a reassurance visit to the longtime ally.

In talks with King Abdullah late yesterday, Obama told his host the two countries remained in lockstep on their strategic interests despite policy differences over Iran and Syria.

Express train driver run over by goods train in Bengal

The driver of a stationary express train was run over by a goods train at a West Bengal station Saturday, railway officials said.

Niranjan Pandit, who was scheduled to retire from service March 31, died on the spot after he was crushed under the goods train at Rajabhatkhawa station.

“A case of unnatural death was recorded. Pandit was the driver of the Up Intercity Express which was going from Siliguri to Alipurduar and had halted at the station. When the goods train was about to cross on the down Line, he apparently jumped on to the tracks,” said station manager Arindam Mukherjee.

The scouring for the crashed Malaysian jet intensified today with Chinese aircraft making fresh sightings in the new area of the Indian Ocean, even as the multination search entered its fourth week without success.

The search for the crashed Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 dramatically shifted 1,100 km further northeast in the southern Indian Ocean yesterday.

The Chinese Maritime Safety Administration ship Haixun 01 and Chinese navy vessel Jinggangshan, which carries two helicopters, searched the area for the plane that went missing three weeks ago.

Slovaks vote in second round of presidential poll

The second round of Slovakia’s presidential election kicked off Saturday.

The voters will choose their new president from Prime Minister Robert Fico and philanthropist, businessman and political newcomer Andrej Kiska, Xinhua reported.

Polling started at 7 a.m and will remain open till 10 p.m., an official said.

The results of the run-off will be published by the Central Electoral Committee.

None of the 14 candidates gained over 50 percent of the votes during the first round March 15, as required by the constitution.

President Obama gifts Pope Francis chest of seeds from White House garden

President Barack Obama was recently in Vatican City for his meeting with Pope Francis, where he presented him with a custom seed chest which included seeds for fruits and vegetables directly from the White House garden.

According to reports, the US President held up a pouch and explained that each one has a different seed in it and the chest is made from timber from the first cathedral to open in Baltimore, US, Politico reported.

Woman who accused BSP MP of rape beaten up by husband, asked to withdraw case

A 42-year-old railway employee, who had accused BSP MP from Jaunpur, Dhananjay Singh, of raping her in November 2013, on Saturday charged her husband with beating and intimidating her to take back her complaint against the lawmaker, police said.

According to the victim’s complaint, her husband who lives separately, reached her Mayur Vihar Phase-1 house on Friday night and asked her to withdraw the rape case against Dhananjay.

Youth dies in road accident at Shamsabad

27-year-old, Mohammed Azeem son of late Mohammed Abid, R/O Maheshwaram mandal, died in a road accident at Shamsabad. As per the details Mohammed Azeem who was TV mechanic was passing by Shamsabad area when he was hit from behind by RTC bus no. AP11Z-1299. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The body has been shifted to Shamsabad government hospital for postmortem. The bus driver went absconding leaving the bus after hitting the victim. Shamsabad RGI police has registered a case in this connection.
