‘Wounded’ Jaswant Singh denounces veneration of an individual in BJP

In a sharp attack on Narendra Modi and BJP campaign centric around him, expelled party veteran Jaswant Singh on Sunday deprecated “veneration” of an individual and said world was full of graveyards of those who are considered indispensable to their nation.

Singh, who was expelled by the party on Saturday for six years for refusing to withdraw his nomination as an independent form Barmer, further added that no political party should become handmaiden of an individual.

Unidentified persons attacked a man in Shamshabad

Unidentified persons in early hours of Sunday attacked a man after entering into his house at Rallaguda of Shamshabad.
According to police, victim Yadaiah (25) a labourer R/o Rallaguda of Shamshabad near RGI Airport, was sleeping when unidentified persons managed to enter his house and assaulted him. He sustained serious injuries in the attack and was rushed to Osmania General Hospital for treatment, Doctors treating him stated that his condition is critical.

Municipal elections conclude with record 75% polling

Barring a few minor incidents of violence, the polling for 145 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations across Andhra Pradesh concluded peacefully on Sunday.

Amid tight security, more than 75 per cent of over 95 lakh voters exercised their franchise to elect candidates for 3,990 wards in 145 municipalities, and 2,507 divisions in 10 municipal corporations in Telangana and Seemandhra regions. As many as 17,864 contestants were in the fray in the municipalities and another 3,343 candidates are testing their fortunes in the corporations.

Eight killed in Turkey election violence

Eight people were killed and 18 others were injured Sunday in clashes in local elections in southern Turkey, reports said.

Two people died and nine others were wounded when they were fighting for the election to neighbourhood units at Golbasi village in Kirikhan town of southern Hatay province, Xinhua reported citing private Dogan News Agency.

Six others were killed and five wounded in a gunfight between candidates for neighbourhood units and their relatives in southern Hilvan town of southern Sanliurfa province.

Indian worker killed in Singapore road accident

An Indian construction worker died after being run over by a truck here Saturday. Police said the incident occurred at the Tampines Industrial Avenue 2 around 3 p.m., the Straits Times reported Sunday.

The 33-year-old driver, who is also an Indian national, was arrested for causing death by a negligent act.

The victim was found trapped under the front wheel of the truck when rescuers arrived on the scene.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after his body was extricated from under the wheel.

Gujarat removing economic data from website: Kejriwal

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal Sunday accused the Gujarat government of removing the economic data from its official website.

Kejriwal, who has dismissed the economic model of Gujarat which is led by the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, asked why the state government is avoiding scrutiny.

“I heard Gujarat Govt has removed all economic data from its website. Why? To avoid scrutiny?” Kejriwal tweeted.

According to reports, the Gujarat government had blocked access to official economic data on its website. It later restored some access to it.

Expecting positive results from Saina: Gopichand

Chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand said here Sunday that he is expecting positive results from his star protege Saina Nehwal in the near future.

Delhi Police constable killed in accident

A 25-year-old Delhi Police constable was killed in a road accident when the motorcycle he was riding pillion on was hit by a municipal corporation garbage truck, police said Sunday.

The motorcycle rider was injured but is said to be out of danger.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. Saturday in Model Town area of north Delhi when constable Ajendra, who joined Delhi Police in 2010, was returning home from duty on a motorcycle he had taken a lift on.

Ajendra was posted at the Model Town police station.

Australia to chase 160 against India

India have given Australia a target of 160 to chase in the dead rubber Group 2 clash of the ICC World Twenty20 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here Sunday.

Eight killed in raid on Taliban hideout in Afghanistan

At least eight people were killed when security forces raided a militant hideout in Afghanistan Sunday, an official said.

“Units of security forces raided Taliban hideout in Soch area of Jerm district of northeastern Badakhshan province in the wee hours of Sunday and the operation continued for three hours during which six militants, including commander Mullah Sayed Shah, were killed,” Xinhua quoted Noor Aqa Nadiri, Jerm district governor, as saying.

A policeman and a civilian were also killed in the clash, he added.

Force India’s Hulkenberg finishes fifth in Malaysia

Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg impressed once again, securing fifth position in the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit here Sunday. Teammate Sergio Perez failed to start the race due to an engine problem.

Hulkenberg had finished sixth at the season opening Australian Grand Prix, earning his team eight points while Perez scored a point, finishing in tenth position.

The German, who started seventh on the grid, drove exceptionally well and earned his team another 10 points for his team, taking them to fifth place in the contructor’s standing with 19 points.

Costner hopes to direct ‘Western’ trilogy

Actor-director Kevin Costner says that he wants to make a ‘Western’ movie series.

The 59-year-old actor who last helmed “Open Range” in 2003, revealed that he would like to release the films within a year, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“I’ve got this ‘Western’ that I think I could make. I actually have this idea to make them all at once and release one on Memorial Day, one on Thanksgiving, and then one on the Fourth of July, all within a 12 month span, because it’s all the same story but it truly is a journey, with a fourth movie coming right after,” Collider site quoted him as saying.

Delhi sees warm Sunday, Monday to be cloudy

The national capital saw a warm Sunday with maximum temperature being recorded one notch below the season’s average at 30.7 degrees Celsius. The met department has forecast a clear but warmer Monday after a cloudy start.

“Monday morning will be cloudy but sky will become clear in the day,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 32 and 17 degrees Celsius respectively

Sunday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 17.5 degree Celsius – a notch below average.

Mixed response to Sonia’s rally

Though the Congress left no stone unturned to ensure that party president Sonia Gandhi’s Sunday rally at Ajmal Khan Park here was a success, some people were not excited about the event with one saying all parties were the same and there was no expectation from any of them.

Congress volunteers and party leaders were seen monitoring the arrangements, asking police to allow in the crowd that was initially not let in due to lack of space.

Though the venue was relatively a small one, it was more or less packed.

Magician P.C.Sorcar, who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket from West Bengal’s Barasat, has been slapped a show cause notice by the Election Commission for making derogatory comments against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and his Trinamool Congress rival.

Two days back, without naming the chief minister, Sorcar had said while campaigning: “She says those who have raped, they are naughty boys. I ask her, if she is raped. What will she do?”

People won’t tolerate poor governance: President

With the Lok Sabha election less than 10 days away, President Pranab Mukherjee Sunday said people will no longer accept non-transparent and unresponsive administration.

Mukherjee stressed “urgency” in decision-making and transforming public administration into a dynamic and “result oriented entity”.

“People are demanding better and more efficient administration. They would no longer tolerate non-transparent and unresponsive administration,” he said after inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) here.

For Sunny Deol, acting a satisfying profession

He has been wearing grease paint for over three decades and actor-producer Sunny Deol describes his journey as an actor “satisfying”.

The 57-year-old began his journey with “Betaab” in 1983 and in the past 31 years, he has worked in about 90 films with the titles including some of the big hits like “Arjun”, “Chaalbaaz”, “Ghayal”, “Damini”, “Darr”, “Gadar – Ek Prem Katha” and “Yamla Pagla Deewana”.

Sharing his experience, he acknowledges that “acting is a very satisfying profession”.

World T20: Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 50 runs

Pakistan kept their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals alive with a convincing 50-run win over Bangladesh in a Group 2 encounter of the World Twenty20 here Sunday.

Ahmed Shehzad’s unbeaten 111 off 62 balls propelled Pakistan to 190 for five in 20 overs.

Spinner Abdur Razzak was the only bowler to shackle the Pakistani batsmen. He picked up two wickets and gave away just 20 runs in his four overs.

In reply, Bangladesh never got going and lost wickets at regular intervals, finally stuttering to 140 for seven in 20 overs.

Seven killed, 33 injured in Rajasthan accidents

At least seven people, including three students from a Delhi institute, were killed and 33 injured in two road accidents in Rajasthan Sunday, police said.

Three students, including two girls, were killed and three others injured when their car overturned near Jaisalmer, some 500 km from Jaipur, police inspector Jetha Ram said.

The six students had come to Jaisalmer from Delhi Saturday and were returning after spending a night at a resort when the accident occurred around 10.30 a.m., he said. The identities of the students were being confirmed.

Give proof or apologise: Sabir Ali to Naqvi

Former JD-U leader Sabir Ali Sunday said BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi should either substantiate his allegations or apologise for his comment that Ali has terror links.

“I ask Naqvi to either give me proof or apologise. A defamation notice has been prepared and will be sent to him through my lawyers,” Ali said at a press conference.

“I am ready to hang myself if he (M.A. Naqvi) can prove my relations with any terrorist,” added Ali.

To beat Kolkata heat, Somen Mitra campaigns with water tanker

As the mercury touched 40 degrees Celsius in Kolkata, Congress candidate Somen Mitra was seen campaigning on the streets with a water tanker in tow Sunday.

The veteran leader, who is in the fray from the Kolkata North seat, made his rounds of the Burrabazar area with his party workers accompanied by the tanker.

From tired party workers, to the on-duty police personnel, all were seen quenching their thirst from the taps fitted to the tanker.

“The tanker was a boon for us in battling the sweltering heat,” said a Congress worker.
