Egypt presidential polls on May 26-27

Egypt has set May 26 and 27 for the first round of presidential polls following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, the Supreme Presidential Election Commission (SPEC) said Sunday.

Egyptian expatriates will have four days to cast their votes abroad, from May 15 to 18, noting that the door for presidential nomination and registration will be opened from Monday, Xinhua quoted the SPEC as saying.

Suspected Boko Haram jailbreak foiled in Nigeria

Security operatives in Nigeria foiled a jailbreak by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect at the secret police headquarters, a security official said Sunday.

The jailbreak was attempted early Sunday when the inmates’ handlers went to feed them, spokesperson of the Department of State Security (DSS) Marilyn Ogar said in the capital city Abuja, without giving the number of detainees involved in the incident.

It caused sporadic gunshots by security operatives who quickly brought the situation under control.

Eight killed in El Salvador road crash

At least eight people were killed and 32 injured when the truck in which they were riding, overturned near a town in central El Salvador, an official said Sunday.

The truck was being driven by a minor.

The accident occurred Saturday evening at Kilometer 123 of the Longitudinal del Norte highway near the town of Sensuntepeque in central Cabañas province, the head of communications for the mayor’s office of the town, Juner Guzman, said.

Four people died at the scene and the others passed away at the hospitals, he added.

Brazilian police occupy dangerous shantytowns

About 1,200 Brazilian police supported by armoured vehicles provided by the navy Sunday peacefully occupied the Mare Complex, a group of 15 “favelas”, or shantytowns, considered to be the most dangerous in Rio de Janeiro.

The operation, which had been previously announced and proceeded without gunfire or any other violence, began at 5 a.m. (0800 GMT) when 21 navy armoured cars led the police into the shantytowns, where some 120,000 people live.

Turkish PM claims victory in local elections

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Sunday night claimed victory for his ruling party in the local elections as initial results showed the AKP swept around over 45 per cent of the votes after about 80 percent of the ballots were counted, media reports said.

Erdogan, chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party ( AKP), said that “this is a great victory and significant result”, Xinhua reported. He also thanked those who supported the ruling AKP in the local elections.

Hamilton wins Malaysian Grand Prix

English Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Malaysian Grand Prix, the second race of the 2014 Formula One season, Sunday, while Spanish Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso finished in fourth place.

German Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg finished in fifth place.

Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, came out of the pole position and set the pace, staying ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg, who continues to be the leader in the standings, and four-time defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull).

Kiwi wingsuit diver dies in crash in Switzerland

A Kiwi wingsuit pilot died after crashing into a field following a jump from a helicopter over Switzerland’s Luetschental Valley.

Dan Vicary, 33, died alongside fellow wingsuit pilot Ludovic Woerth from France Saturday. A third man was seriously injured, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Alongside his wingsuit pursuits Vicary, from Invercargill, was also a professional base jumper and skydiver. He lived in Switzerland with his wife Lisa Hutchins. The couple had recently celebrated their third wedding anniversary.

Netanyahu vows response to every effort to attack

Two days after Israeli army shot dead two suspected gunmen while trying to enter the country from Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Sunday to repel all cross-border attacks.

“The IDF thwarted an attempt to infiltrate the border,” Xinhua quoted Netanyahu as saying.

“We will continue to respond to every attempt to attack us and, to the best of our ability and part of our policy of initiating action, we will foil these attacks before they occur. ”

Neither the identities of the killed gunmen nor their reasons for crossing the border have been confirmed.

21 people killed in Tanzania road crash

As many as 21 people were killed and nine seriously injured during an accident in a village in Tanzania Saturday night, police reported.

The crash occurred in the village of Mkupuka in the coastal region when a mini-bus rammed into a lorry, Xinhua quoted Tanzania police as saying Sunday.

The accident was reported almost 24 hours after 12 people, all of them women, died after a pickup in which they were travelling was struck by a lorry from behind Friday night at Hedaru along the Dar es Salaam-Arusha highway.

Demand to publish Telangana Gazette separately

Mr. Meer Hadi Ali, President of All India Shia Organization demanded the Principal Secretary of the Dept. of Minorities Welfare to complete second survey report as early as possible and publish the same in a separate Gazette for Telangana. He pointed out that in the last survey report many wakf properties were not registered due to non submission of proper wakf records. Due to shortage of staff only 35 thousand wakf properties are being computerized at the instance of Govt. of India, whereas there is a record of 40, 000 registered wakf properties. This will not be published by Govt. of A.P.

Chances of finding black boxes from Malaysian jet slim

Chances of finding the black boxes containing data that would presumably clear up the mystery of flight MH370 are dropping with every passing day, US military officers said Sunday.

The plane disappeared earlier this month in the Indian Ocean.

US Navy Capt. Mark Matthews said that it will be practically impossible to locate the black boxes, the “beepers” on which have a battery life of 30-45 days, before the batteries die somewhere in the area of 319,000 square km where the plane is being sought.

YSRCP in Seema Andhra and TRS in Telangana predicted victory

According to NTV – Nelson Survey report YSRCP will get 129-133 out 175 Assembly seats in Seema Andhra and it is very likely that Mr. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will form the Govt. TDP will emerge as the second largest party in Seema Andhra region with 42-46 Assembly seats. The other parties may get 1-4 seats. Out of 25 Lok Sabha seats in Seema Andhra, YSRCP is likely to get 19-21 seats and TDP 4-6 seats. YSRCP will poll 48% and TDP 40% votes whereas other parties will get 9.5% and Congress only 5% votes in the next election.
