‘Sachin unhappy when asked to bat at No 4 in ODIs in 2002-03’

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar was not too happy when he was asked by his then captain Sourav Ganguly to bat at number four in ODIs in 2002-03, according to a book.

Ganguly, who captained the recently-retired Tendulkar in 143 of the 341 international matches they played together, recalled that the Mumbaikar was brought back as opener during the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Indian economy grew at sluggish 4.7 percent in Q3

India’s economy expanded at a sluggish 4.7 percent in the third quarter of the current financial year from 4.8 percent in the previous quarter, dragged down by contraction in the manufacturing and mining sectors, government data showed Friday.

According to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), manufacturing output shrunk by 1.9 percent, while mining production contracted by 1.6 percent in October-December quarter of the current fiscal.

The services sector grew at 7 percent and the farm sector expanded by 3.6 percent during the quarter under review.

When asked about the same, Karan said: “It’s great these kids of the new generation are kissing on screen. It’s the new ethos… but senior actors didn’t do this. Yami Gautam supports Food for Soul’ campaign

There isn’t enough food for everyone in the country and now actress Yami Gautam endorses ‘Food for Soul’ campaign, which aims at feeding the underprivileged.

Initiated by online food ordering platform Foodpanda along with non-profit organisation Uday Foundation, the campaign encourages patrons to generously feed the lesser privileged.

Foodpanda patrons can log on to the website and make a donation to a listed food item like foodgrains, pulses, vegetable oil and biscuits. The portal will then forward the proceedings to the charitable institution, thus reaching out to many children.

BMW hit-and-run accused permitted to go abroad

A court here has allowed Utsav Bhasin, who is facing trial in the 2008 BMW hit-and-run case, to visit Europe for 14 days.

Bhasin, son of a Haryana-based industrialist, was driving his BMW car when he allegedly hit a two-wheeler on Delhi’s Moolchand flyover, killing rider Anuj Singh in September 2008. A journalist of a TV channel was also injured in the accident.

He is facing trial under various charges dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, driving rashly which could endanger human life and causing grievous hurt.

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi Friday claimed people have realised that the Congress party was responsible for their miseries and hence that party would be wiped out in the Lok Sahba polls.

Addressing an election rally in this north Karnataka town, around 270 km from Bangalore, he attacked Congress President Sonia Gandhi, without naming her, for what he described as her failure to “give an account of 10 years’ rule” to the people.

California man sues McDonald’s for $1.5mln after being offered just one napkin with meal

A California man is suing McDonald’s for 1.5 million dollars, claiming that he only got one napkin with his meal.

Webster Lucas said that he was stiffed on napkins at the Mickey D’s in Pacoima, CA on January 29th after ordering a Quarter Pounder Deluxe.

And when he went up to the counter to ask for more, he was rudely rebuffed by the manager who insisted he already got some, TMZ.com reported.

According to his lawsuit, Lucas, who is black, then retorted. That’s when Lucas said that things got racist, claiming the manager (a Mexican-American) mumbled something about “you people.”

Obama confesses getting `high` in school and not thinking about harm

Barack Obama has confessed that he did drugs in school and didn’t think about the harm it could do to him. The US president, who launched the ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ initiative, spoke to teenagers involved in the ‘Becoming a Man” program to help at-risk boys in his hometown, Chicago, the Huffington Post reported. He said that he sees himself in the teenagers and admitted that he made bad choices when he was in school and didn’t take it as seriously as he should have. Obama added that he made excuses and sold himself short sometimes.

Cabinet approves GSLV’s revised cost estimate

The union cabinet Friday approved a revised cost estimate of Rs.2,962.78 crore for completing the development programme of the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV Mk-III and to carry out an experimental flight.

An official release said additional fund requirement was Rs.464.78 crore over the original provision of Rs.2,498 crore was needed to complete the scope of the project, including one experimental flight called LVM3-X and two developmental flights called GSLV Mk-III D1 and GSLV Mk-III D2.

Five Indians allegedly buried alive in Saudi Arabia

Three men have confessed in a court in Saudi Arabia that they buried alive five Asian workers, believed to be Indians, on a farm four years ago, a media report said.

The bodies of the victims were discovered by a farmer, Ali Habib, who had rented a 20,000-square-metre farm two years ago from its elderly woman owner, earlier this month while clearing the land in Safwa area of Qatif in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The crime happened in 2010.

Police arrested 25 people, including expatriates and Saudi citizens, in connection with the case, the Arab News reported Thursday.

Cabinet defers taking up anti-graft ordinances

The union cabinet Friday deferred taking up the anti-graft ordinances which were being pushed by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

The cabinet decided to postpone taking up the ordinances, informed sources said.

The ordinances on the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill and the Right of Citizens for Time-Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill were on the agenda but were not taken up.

These were among the anti-corruption bills being pushed by Gandhi to create a “framework” to fight graft.
